After hearing about "Atlantic Fever" during an author interview on NPR, I decided to buy it on Kindle. If anything, Joe Johnson was far better in print than in an interview. He analyzed the competition to be the first to fly from New York to Paris to win the Orteig Prize in the 1920s and the people involved--the aviators, the promoters, the engine manufacturers, and the airframe manufacturers.What we have taken for granted since May 30, 1939 (when Pan Am started regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic flights) was a new field in the 1920s, when primitive aircraft, weather conditions, pilot fatigue, and navigation techniques were the major obstacles to long-distance flight.I'd recommend this book to all audiences who can read it, from junior high school on up. Well-written history can become habit-forming!

This was a historic block of time brought to life quite nicely. The in-fighting, jealousies and the thin, fine line that divides heroism from sheer stupidity were well illustrated, along with the politics of the time. Much of what I read I never knew, and that in itself, made the book worthwhile.

This book is written as much for introverts as for those who know introverts. Karen does a fantastic job distilling practical job and networking advice into a potion that introverts can use to make them a career superpower. I've had the privilege to know Karen professionally and personally for 15 years. Her writing style here is crisp and focused, much like her advice in real life. Great read to wrap up the year and give yourself the motivation to jump into the new year with a renewed sense of networking energy. Read it now, in time for a challenging networking scene: holiday parties.

I've been a big fan of Karen's for a long time. She has shepherded many a Silicon Valley CEO and their management teams through some of the best of the booms and busts over the last decades. This book is useful for anyone seeking practical advice on building business relationships. It's not just for introverts, and certainly not just for those building and running companies. By dissecting skills into accessible anecdotes and providing clear examples, Karen makes the core lessons easily applicable to the reader and yet highly tangible. It's an easy read, a fun read, you forget you're there to sit at Karen's lap and digest some of her wisdom. We bought several copies to circulate around our office and they've already been passed around several times.

If the mere idea of business networking makes you want to crawl into bed and pull the covers over your head, this is a terrific book for you. I worked with Karen Wickre at Google, and she is one of the most well-connected people I know. Her new book shares her secrets to building your own network -- even if, or especially if, you're an introvert. Key to her approach are curiosity, generosity, and a devoted practice of staying in contact with your broader circle through "loose-touch habits." She offers tips for building relationships over coffee, email, and social media; managing small-talk; leveraging your network to help others; and using that same network to help yourself (with grace and gratitude). As a social introvert myself, I'll return to this book often when I need a good pep talk and plan for getting out into the world.

This is a terrific reminder of things you already know ("stay in touch") and smart and efficient strategies to do what you know you ought.It's never preachy, and is punctuated with great stories and examples. I had a long flight the other day and by the end of the flight I had done more to keep my network up and going (and growing) than I'd done in a very long time. It was a good example, a nudge, and some great advice, wrapped up in an easily consumed volume.That 'airplane work' is already paying off for me my finding some expert advice for two different projects. Totally worth the small investment of $$ and time.

This book review is my first; a testament to how much I appreciate this book and the hard work it's author Karen Wickre put into it.My background is in journalism and design research both careers that place a high premium on authentic conversations and redirecting the conversation away from yourself. Networking, as I knew it, was the polar opposite -- sell yourself and keep the conversation focused on you, which made it exhausting for me. I would add that beyond being exhausting, this kind of networking felt a bit outdated like a scene from a bad film about Wall Street in the '80s.Karen Wickre's book "Taking The Work Out of Networking" updates the networking conversation from fake sales pitch to cultivating a meaningful (memorable) conversation. Moreover, what I appreciate is that she not only set this as the goal but then provides the reader with easy tools to achieve it. The book is an easy lift too- the language is engaging and consumable. After, I read it my husband picked it up which again -- never happens. I'm thinking of sending copies to my niece and nephew who are in college and starting their career path. In the book, there are practical tips on how to craft a "social authentic" persona on social media, which I thought they might find helpful.

What really hit home was how Karen put networking in context of everyday life and her wise counsel not to define it as a transactional “project” when I need it. She describes how by simply listening, observing and being curious, you can create meaningful connections.As a reluctant networker, the book gave me a new perspective and simple ways to put it to practice. I loved the “Try It Out” sections and the stories woven into the book from people sharing their experiences.

Karen's book is a great read — full of excellent, practical advice that's actionable vs. vague notions. I am a reluctant networker who has gotten better with time, but it's still not my favorite thing to do. I'm so thankful that Karen has put her wisdom into a format that can be shared with everyone!

I enjoyed this book as it is full with useful advise from many years of experience. Very clear directions on building a network of useful connections and how to approach them.

Wolfe and Archie travel to an upstate lodge where a group of the world's greatest chefs are gathered for a regular scheduled meeting where there are Too Many Cooks. Part of their activities is to determine, one at a time, which of a list of ingredients is left out of a specially prepared sauce. A murder of one of the chefs interrupts, and Wolfe must determine who is responsible for the murder. It's a very challenging test for Wolf, and I enjoyed seeing the actions between him and Archie while they are so far from home.Champagne for One is the method to murder a young woman at a yearly charity event. Archie happens to be attending, quite by chance, so Wolfe feels compelled to investigate. Fortunately, a client comes forward to ask him to minimize any information that might be discovered about him during the course of the investigation. Archie was watching the young woman in question as she drank the champagne so it seems there was no way anyone could have poisoned her. Wolfe is able to find a slight crack through which he can detect the murderer.I enjoyed both novels and was glad to find them combined in one volume. I am a huge fan of Wolfe and Archie, and I highly recommend this book.

I don’t usually enjoy the stories where Wolfe is removed from the Brownstone- part of what I love about these books is the atmosphere and the recurring NYC based characters - but too many cooks I’d still s great read. Archie is s little less likable as he lets loose more than one racist pejorative but the story is good. The second book is just as entertaining., Champagne for one. All the usual characters and s snooty cast of suspects.

Archie gets Nero Wolfe to actually leave his beloved brownstone to attend a gathering of foodies and various female family members. No sooner has the train left the station than the accusations of skull duggery start, big knives disappear, and the females start making trouble. One of the knives is found in one of the chefs, and pressure is on Wolfe to solve it. Second book is a baby mama who wants-death? Surely not, and Archie brings in the suspects only to have the case turned on its head - twisty mystery with a twisty endiing; 2 good mysteries!

A gathering of the greatest chefs in the world; Nero wolfe having to travel by train to attend as the guest of honor; amazingly described dishes prepared by these chefs (I get hungry every time I read this book); and, by the way, a murder. Brilliantly written, a fantastic cast of characters and suspects, and an ingeneous solution in Mr. Wolfe's own inimitable style. I would recommend this book to anyone why might be interested in top-shelf mysteries.Champagne For One: A terrific story! As always with Rex Stout, brilliantly written, great plot and characters, and a surprise solution. This book is special in that it offers a unique insight into Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe's self-described confidential assistant-gofer-leg man-and, as needed, cattle prod. The murder, at a high-class charity soiree, takes place literally in front of Archie and he takes it very personally. His thoughts and comments on the subject are, by themselves, well worth reading this book. But don't limit yourself to just this segment. The entire book delivers the gamut of emotions and challanges your thought processes all the way to the final solution.

Twenty years elapsed between the publication of "Too Many Cooks" (1938) and "Champagne for One" (1958), the former near the beginning of Rex Stout's career as a writer of crime fiction -- he'd already pursued more careers than most of us even aspire to -- and the latter not yet close to the end, with 18 to go! Stout (1886-1975) wrote the first 'Nero Wolfe' novel in 1934, after retiring in his forties with some wealth from the world of banking. In all, he wrote 73 novels depicting his slothful sleuth, the gargantuan gourmand and orchid fancier Nero Wolfe. Wow! And there are people who've read every one of them!But the years and the commercial success took a toll on Rex Stout's literary skills. "Too Many Cooks" is a brilliantly stylish, highly original book, crisp, witty, and compelling intellectually, with the added bonus of some serious social content. Fictional detective Nero Wolfe, the ultimate New York elitist, turns out to have been a thoroughgoing liberal about race at a time when even his fellow New Yorker - you know, "that man!" in the White House - wasn't. I would rank "Too Many Cooks" as one of the few real 'classics' of popular crime fiction; I've already reviewed it separately. "Champagne for One" is a throwaway, totally formulaic, neither as stylish in language nor as vivid in character portrayal as the earlier book. It's the sort of pop novel one reads when one doesn't want to engage in thought of any sort. The two don't belong on the same shelf, let alone in the same volume, in terms of interest. I suppose they've been linked because of the "food and drink" descriptions in both, but even in that vein, the earlier book surpasses the later as much as "tournedos Rossini" would surpass "chicken-fried steak."

Patricia H. Thornton is Adjunct Professor affiliated with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Duke University Fuqua School of Business and affiliated faculty to the Program on Organizations, Business, and the Economy, Department of Sociology, Stanford University. Her research focuses on institutional and organizational change, innovation and entrepreneurship, and institutional logics and strategic management. Her book, Markets from Culture: Institutional Logics and Organizational Decisions, (Stanford University Press) was published in 2004. She received her Ph.D. in 1993 in Sociology from Stanford University.William Ocasio is the John L. and Helen Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management, and Professor of Sociology, by Courtesy, Northwestern University. In addition to institutional logics, his research focuses on attention, vocabularies, and strategy processes in organizations and institutional fields. Currently he is Senior Editor at Organization Science. He received his Ph.D. in 1992 in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University. Michael Lounsbury is a Professor, Thornton A. Graham Chair, and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Alberta School of Business. He is also a Principal Investigator at the National Institute of Nanotechnology. And though the book’s cover photo is of the “The Mick” and “Dimag”… Casey gets as much if not more “book” time than the two aforementioned icons. It makes sense that Casey is center stage… since he was the manager that had to balance the crumbling demise of what was known as Joe DiMaggio… and at the same time manage and control the expectation of a raw young superstar in the making.The author does a good job of chronicling not only the statistical trail of this crossroad year of Yankee history… but also the psychological and mental aspects. Amazingly… the most impressive part of the book… is the balancing act… and onstage performance… of a heretofore caricature… of a rubber faced… wobbling… mangler… of the English language… “The Old Perfessor” himself… Casey Stengel. Casey is one part politician… one part… vaudeville act… one part… baseball strategist… and one part… (Which was surprising to me even after half-a-century of dedication to the love of baseball) disciplinarian. Also surprising… but not as much so… was what an unlovable… unsympathetic… individual… Joe DiMaggio was. In fact… after reading this book… I can now “answer”… without hesitation… the poetic… musical question asked by Paul Simon: “Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?”…The answer is… he got the hell out of New York… at the request of all his teammates! Here is one of the nice descriptions of his alienation from his teammates. “Tommy Henrich and DiMaggio had played side by side for 10 years, a decade of baseball shared. Each man deeply respected and admired the other’s skills on the ball field. Truth is, a harsh word never passed between the two. But Henrich could never remember sharing a meal with Joe.”“Joe was extraordinarily self-conscious off. (The field) DiMaggio wasn’t the most articulate fella and he feared coming off as an uneducated rube.” There is a very nostalgic throw-back feel to the book as individuals always refer to people as being “swell”… and the other players are quite often referred to as “the fellas”… and the reporters warmly referred to as “the boys”. It’s almost like watching an old black and white Jimmy Stewart or Humphrey Bogart movie. The release date of this book seemed to change many times as I received numerous Emails from Amazon notifying me of such changes. It has been my experience that when this happens… more often than not… that foretells editing problems… and there were a number of typos and grammatical mistakes. This is a book that will be enjoyed by “old-school” baseball fans.

Author Andrew O'Toole has brought the 1951 season of the New York Yankees back to life when the final season of Joe DiMaggio overlapped with the rookie year of Mickey Mantle. Author O'Toole paints magnificent portraits of the reclusive DiMaggio, the much-heralded Mantle who hit moon shots from both sides of the plate, along with General Manager George Weiss, Manager Casey Stengel, and other members of the team such as Yogi Berra, Hank Bauer, Gil MacDougald, and others. The author does a wonderful job in presenting the tug-of-war between Weiss and Stengel as to what Mantle's immediate future should be; the minor leagues at Kansas City or with the parent Yankees.We have the conflict between Stengel and DiMaggio which each presented as nonexistent to reporters while having private thoughts about each other. Mantle's struggles that had him sent to the Yankees' Kansas City's minor league farm club led to his father's stern lecture that eventually got him on the road to success.The book concludes with coverage of the 1951 World Series between the Yankees and the New York Giants. The book contains no photos but Author O'Toole paints such vivid pictures throughout the book of the principal characters that the lack of photos went unnoticed by me. Forest have been felled on the printing of books on the New York Yankees but this one is a gem whether you are a Yankee fan or not. Buy the book. It is well worth it.

Very entertaining. Pretty much already knew of the story. The author did fill in some pieces of the story I hadn't known of. Would suggest book to any baseball fan. This bit of history is remarkable considering that two of the games greatest players were members of the same team for one special year!

If one wants a readable, accurate replay of the 1951 season, this is a good place to go.If the intent is to learn more about the relationship between Joe and Mickey, then it's not.The author's admitted sources are the already-published newspaper accounts of the beat writers and columnists of New York in 1951, and little if any new material will be found here. Casey should have gotten space in the title, since the book is as much about him as Joe and Mickey. That's not bad, but also not what I was expecting.It's a quick and somewhat unsatisfying read.

I am a Yankee fan and love to read about the history of that franchise. This was an in depth look at this unique year with a lot of good information about the principle players.

Great historical read on the strait ed relationship ship of Yankee greats Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle in 1951 as their careers go in opposite directions.Like two ships passing in the night, neither is very aware or concerned about the other. The guy pulling the strings and deftly orchestrating the New York media is loquacious manger Casey Stengel.Great read (especially for ardent Yankee fans)!

By the title I thought there would be much info on the relationship between DiMaggio and Mantle, there was not. It was just a recap of the 1951 season with some background. Title was misleading. I was disappointed.
