How Life Imitates Chess by former World Chess Champion and grandmaster Garry Kasparov does an incisive job of showing how life is a mirror for chess. Or is it the opposite?Filled with much erudition regarding the intricacies of life, How Life Imitates Chess sifts through the data points, or perhaps ‘life-lessons’ is a better term, which helped him grow as a chess player that became a grandmaster, but more importantly, as an individual. Each of these life-lessons helped him grow in countless ways, regardless whether it was facing dismal defeats, or manifesting intensely resounding victories. To that effect, Kasparov makes it a point to go into why constant self-analysis is essential not only to survive in the world, but in fact to thrive. Self-awareness and peak performance go hand in hand, as some of you may know. Because of this Kasparov urges everyone to become conscious of their individual inherent decision making process and strive to polish it to become wiser. Some of the varying components featured in the book are the myriad fascinating stories of individuals, chess matches, companies et al., which are used to drive home lessons to be gleaned from the events that took place within those instances.Another notable point mentioned in the book is the importance of not becoming your own enemy. In one instance, the author noted how it’s important to find the nascent stage of a crisis before it becomes a full-fledged crisis. This might seem obvious at first blush, but we’ve all seen our mental state – or that of someone else – be overridden by emotions, which therein overrides our logic. And not being able to use logic is downright disastrous since your mental precision is only a shade of its true power.Furthermore, when an individual get emotional, not only does the amygdala go into overdrive, but “…the logic center processors [neocortex] get almost turned off and blocked. Adrenaline, hormone levels, and blood pressure rise, and our memories become less efficient. We begin to lose our ability to communicate effectively, and we turn to a form of autopilot to make decisions.”[Emphasis Added][1]Hands down, my favorite part of the book, although admittedly there were many intriguing points, was how Kasparov relentless speaks about having to question everything. As he warns:“Question the status quo at all times, especially when things are going well. When something goes wrong, you naturally want to do better the next time, but you must train yourself to want to do it better even when things go right.”[135][Bold Emphasis Added][2]This reminds me of poker, as well as many other things in life, where a person might make the most ridiculous and stupid choice, and still get rewarded. If an individual chooses not to question their actions, they will simply not grow. Someone may make a very poor choice, and still end up winning untold sums of money. When such is the case, individuals rarely if ever opt for introspection to verify that they were correct. The assumption is that if the money is won…then the choice ‘had to’ be a good one. Nothing could be further from the truth. Moreover:“Questioning yourself must become a habit, one strong enough to surmount the obstacles of overconfidence and dejection. It is a muscle that can be developed only with constant practice.”[3]Another additional point brought up by Kasparov was about the vital significance not only to move out of our comfort zones, but also to challenge ourselves in creative ways to push us into new boundaries.Regarding this, Kasparov minces no words:“When we regularly challenge ourselves with something new – even something not obviously related to our immediate goals – we build cognitive and emotional “muscles” that make us more effective in every way. If we can overcome our fear of speaking in public, or of submitting a poem to a magazine, or learning a new language confidence will flow into every area of our lives Don’t get so caught up in “what I do” that you stop being a curious human being. Your greatest strength is the ability to absorb and synthesize patterns, methods, and information. Intentionally inhibiting the ability to focus too narrowly is not only a crime, but one with few rewards.”[4]This book almost has shades of being a self-help book, almost. The book isn’t that, but it’s so versatile, and the book harpoons so many little nuggets of knowledge that it can certainly be used as such a tool.In plainspeak, if you’re looking for a book that delves into Chess, Life, Business, while also searching for gems of wisdom that may help you become a sharper, stronger, and more intuitive individual, but also dives into the importance of quality actions via precise decision making, then ruminate upon this book._____________________________________________________________Sources & References[1] Christopher Hadnagy, Unmasking The Social Engineer, pg. 166.[2] Gary Kasparov, How Life Imitates Chess, pg. 135.[3] Ibid., pp. 34-35.[4] Ibid. pg. 170.

So I read this book even though I am not such a big fan of "the boardroom." Poor Garry has been getting himself arrested lately for being the leader of Russia's opposition party. Did he not see those photos of Putin barechested and packing heat? That could have been interpreted as a clue. I understand he's left the country to live somewhere else in one of the world's 180+ nations that accord (relative) freedom to its citizenry. This book is incisive and though many authors and pundits have drawn analogies between the decisions and actions that characterize great chess play and those that shape history in the real world, I am impelled to insist that the one thing that benefits most – above all others – from keen chess savvy... is chess. An 18-inch board with 64 squares and six different types of interacting "characters" can hardly be compared to the complexities of living life. Granted that many players, like Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer and Ludek Pachman (just to name a very few) become politically involved in a dramatic way. Chess, as its conducted at the world-class level, is intensely characterized by political intrigues, and many great players are paid to endorse chess products (computers, sets, books) just like athletes in the more physical sports, and – yes – chess has been the artificial intelligence benchmark for computer programmers for decades. But it certainly doesn't stand alone as a template for understanding and coping with life. Greatly admire the author. Humbled by his chess prowess. The book was OK. Well worth the read.

Both "How Life Imitates Chess" and "Art of Learning" are written by men of similar experience about similar topics. Both winners in chess took their experiences to become winners in other arenas. Both now speak and coach corporations and businesses in success strategies. While Waitzkin's book is more exciting because of the blow-by-blow writing style, and exciting battles in martial arts, I think Kasparov's book has more lasting value because of this one difference: Waitzkin recommends success by finding what you are good at, and putting yourself in more positions where your strengths will shine. Kasparov recommends success by taking honest inventory of what you are not good at, and putting the most effort into your weaknesses for better overall balance. I believe our world needs more of the second approach as I will point out below. Both books completely ignore the idea of cooperation. In every example, these two experts tell us how to vanquish the enemy. I personally have no enemies. My business does not depend on competition. I win when others win. This idea is not even hinted at in either book. One might jump to the conclusion that chess helps people who are competitive, but leaves a hole where your cooperative skills would be.Both authors could learn from Benjamin Franklin who played chess frequently. Franklin was a genius in many arenas, many we are still learning as pointed out in "Benjamin Franklin's Numbers" by math teacher Paul Pasles. We may assume that Franklin might have been the world champion at chess if he had felt the urge to competition. But even during the war, he did not view England as an adversary, nor the States as a winner at someone's expense, but often said that American independence would be good for the whole world, England included. Our earth is too small, now, to continue thinking competitively. In Franklin's own words,"moderate your desire of victory over your adversary, and be pleased with one over yourself. Snatch not eagerly at every advantage offered by his unskilfulness or inattention; but point out to him kindly, that by such a move he places or leaves a piece in danger and unsupported; that by another he will put his king in a perilous situation, etc. By this generous civility ... you may, indeed, happen to lose the game to your opponent; but you will win what is better, his esteem, his respect, and his affection, together with the silent approbation and goodwill of impartial spectators."

If we’re completely honest with ourselves, health classes in the United States are a mess. There are no set requirements for curriculum at the federal or state level, which leads to wild variations in the health education kids receive—while students in New York State may be watching graphic slideshows on STDs, students in Indiana may be watching videos with strong “abstinence only” messages. The lack of continuity in information being provided to American kids is alarming, and it can lead to serious issues in their adult lives.Enter Hannah Witton, British YouTuber and sex educator. Her debut book, “Doing It! Let’s Talk About Sex”, is a comprehensive guide to sex, relationships, and a number of other topics in between. And it is precisely the sort of book adolescent Americans ought to be reading.Engaging, sensitive, and thoughtful, Witton’s book addresses not only the ins and outs of sex, its benefits, and its risks, but also focuses in on more specific topics of significant modern importance, like consent (and, along with it, rape and abusive relationships), explanations of different identities in the LGBTQ+ community and personal narratives from some of its members, and the concept of body image within our heavily digitized-publicized-criticized world. In the new American edition of the book, Witton incorporates statistics specific to the United States in order to provide her readers across the pond with a more personally relevant reading experience.“Doing It!” allows for readers to learn about a wide variety of subjects in a non-judgmental, pro-fact manner, thus enabling them to make their own informed decisions when it comes to how they conduct themselves within their own lives and in their interactions with others. Rather than being at the mercy of their school districts, young American readers in particular will gain enough of an overview of the subjects that may not be covered in their health classes to approach their real-life encounters with more openmindedness and with greater empathy. This book could not have made its way to the United States at a better time. While many are enjoying more freedom in the way they lead their lives than ever before, we are also in the middle of an era of great national uncertainty, fear, anger, and misunderstanding. Although Witton is not an American, the publication of “Doing It!” was timely for readers in both her country and ours. Her charm and natural tendency toward kindness is palpable throughout the work, and it is an attitude that deserves recognition– to have that sort of voice be a source of guidance for adolescents in this day and age is invaluable.Overall, I give “Doing It!” by Hannah Witton 4.5/5 stars.

I'd recommend this book whole-heartedly for any teens curious about sexuality and sexual health. Each topic discussed does so in a non-judgmental way that acknowledges the pleasures of sex and not just the "dangers." Inclusive of LGBTQIA+ identities, and seeks out stories from those that identify that way to address the topics that Hannah doesn't have personal experience with. And a huge bonus point for how this book addresses consent and healthy relationships!

Absolutely AMAZING book riddled with extremely important answers to questions I’d been asking myself my entire life. The book is divided into sections, and it’s stated right off the start that you don’t have to read it in order. I would recommend this to any human being on planet earth with even the smallest questions about anything related to sex and relationships because Hannah Witton is SURELY to answer your questions. ♥️♥️♥️

Great read and very informative

Good, basic sex ed.

Super great read from a totally awesome YouTuber! I’ve loved Hannah Witton’s channel and her content on YouTube. This book is just as awesome as her channel.

love hannah and this book was great!

I got an ARC of this book.I teach a sex ed class in the local county jail for the juvenile inmates. This book would not have held their attention in the slightest. The book is not bad, but unless you are a fan of her videos or her voice you may find it a bit basic. I enjoyed the book for the most part, I can't say I learned anything from it which is reassuring when it comes to teaching my own class, but also sad because I always hope to learn something when I read a book.Witton is clearly up on her game when it comes to information about sex and relationships, but there was some information that was not entirely accurate for the US. One of those was getting paperwork results for STI tests. I have never received paper results. I have been tested in multiple states in the US and never gotten a single piece of paper. Witton explains that some places also use the internet to give results, but says that if you are positive then it says it right in the online screen. Every testing facility that I have used will not give you positive results online. They will make you call in to get those results so you can schedule treatment. The other issue I had with the testing section was the results in the US take drastically longer to get. Clinics say it takes weeks and going to my personal doctor takes at least a week. The few rapid tests are read in minutes, but most results take weeks even in cities like SF. So I am glad that the UK is doing great with getting results that quickly, but that is not how the US works. I only care that she didn't specify that there are differences in the countries because in the chapter that discusses sexting and age of consent, she does.My next issue is the US prosecutes teenagers who sext as sex offenders and child pornographers. There is no community service or fine. It is registration for being a sex offender and prison time here. That is completely glossed over and made to look like everything will be ok, but be careful. In the US it is a huge deal and can ruin someone's life. So please, if you are under 18 do not take or send nude photos or send sexually explicit messages. If you partner is under the age of consent, it does not matter if their parents say it is ok. You can still be charged for statutory rape. Remember that I work in a law office and see these cases on a daily basis. When it doubt, don't do it. The LGBTQ chapter was so underwhelming I am annoyed that it was included. I am impressed that Witton admitted to being straight and cis, while then going on to say that she interviewed people on the subject and allowed them to give the education. That was great. It is so rare that queer people are given a voice that I am happy it was handled this way. However, the chapter had no substance. Even at 14, the youngest age that the book is recommended for according to the introduction, none of that information would have been helpful to the baby queer that I was then. I am thankful that she tried, but it just fell flat for me.The rest of the book was pretty tame, nothing glaringly wrong or shocking. The book read as very much a beginner guide to sex positive sex education for young teenagers. I could have done without the author giving me her break-up story that spanned through the whole book. That just felt masturbatory, pun intended. Overall, the book felt very weak. I have not watched her videos, but from the voice she uses in the book I can imagine that they are engaging and more helpful that this book was. Her voice was too big to be trapped to a medium that only had one expression. I can understand why she has fans and I hope that my voice is as engaging as hers when I am teaching.

This was the most amazing National Geographic with the tallest and largest trees in the nation within. Awesome!!!

It was in very good condition for being five years old. The magazine didn't even appear to be read since it made the news

The magazine was in pretty good condition, a little sun damaged and had obviously been read through a few times. The poster was well intact, which was the most important thing for me. I lost my copy of this issue and wanted a replacement so I could put the poster up next to the giant sequoia poster. Looks great.

Great. My son love it :)Thank you.Great service!

good stuff, but came very used and old.

I bought this for the cool centerfold: an entire redwood, with five people climbing at various heights. I put it up in my son's room, since he's crazy about redwoods. The text is for an adult, but the pictures are lovely and great for kids.

This item arrived right after I ordered it and I was very impressed with the condition of it. It was like new and not even bent at all. I am very pleased with the seller and would recommend this seller to anyone--they are reliable and timely!

Worth it for the poster alone!
