I first found this book at my local bookstore and just glanced at it. A few months later it was still there so I decided to take a longer look. I am not sure why it remained in the store so long! This book is full of pictures of antique laces and original antique garments. Most of the garments are from the collection of the museum the author works for but some are from private collections.Each chapter covers a different type of lace. From Brussels Lace to Chantilly, you will find detailed historical remarks as well as pictures of antique fashions, historical catalog pages and fashion plates.If your recreation specialty is fashions of the 1900s to the early 1930s, you will regret not even glancing at this book. It is full of fashion ideas and ways to use modern laces to recreate historical fashions. My only regret was they put historical garments on models who obviously weren't wearing period undergarments.This title is definitely worth the price tag and is not just another fashion coffee table book.

The good stuff first:This book is wonderfully photographed, and has an absolutely superb array of antique and vintage garments that articulate better than words can the stunning, breathtaking, intricate inspiration of lace.I'm not a lace expert, though I'm roughly familiar with types and terms. I was looking for a book to give me a solid foothold into the world of lace: How is each particular type made? What are the distinguising characteristics of each? How do I distinguish machine-made lace from handmade? I'm still looking for my dream book that addresses all I just mentioned, but this book is a good start.It's a better reference book for those who have a bit more than a beginner's knowledge of lace (because of the lack of side-by-side comparisons; lack of illustrations right next to descriptions of types of lace). However, for beginners, it's still a really fantastic feast for the eyes, just the volume to get one excited about lace.I already loved lace, but this enhance my appreciation more. Really, enough good things cannot be said about the photography. Truly excellent, with lots and lots and lots of color.The bad stuff:The author is in some way affiliated with the museum that supplied most of the antique and vintage garments and examples of lace (she is the curator, I believe). This was an absolute bonus to the book as there are truly some great examples of clothing shown.However, somehow the power of the curator has swept aside the power of the editor (or publisher), and as a result this book is +filled+ with silly and absolutely non-useful photographs of the author's doll fashion handiwork (which involves, of course, lace).By no means is this just a couple of pictures. Full color after full color, full page after full page (some even in double-page spreads) the reader is forced to endure what may not be in actuality, but what comes across a bit as the author's artistic vanity.Small mannequins in the form of Barbie dolls litter and disrupt this book, clad in period-style apparel composed in whole or in part by vintage and modern laces. The sheers number of these doll photographs disrupt the focus of the book. They add nothing to one's knowledge of lace and add little to one's appreciation of lace (the dolls are small and are too minute to model the lace if the intent is to see the lace better by putting it on a doll). It's just a Barbie doll fashion show.Now, there are many that might delight in this type of thing, in its own place (i.e., its own book: "Vintage Fashions as Modelled by Barbie"). I think even one or two of these photographs would not have detracted from this book. But there are +so many+ of these full-page Barbie photographs that I feel readers are cheated out of information that might have been in its place.I didn't want this book because I had an interest in the author's doll fashion-crafting hobby, nor am I interested in her design skills as pertain to human-sized fashion (there are some of these photographs as well). This book was supposed to be about the history and pricing of lace, not some ego trip for the author. These dolls belong in another book (which probably would be a fantastic book on its own).It's like getting squash when you ordered pasta. Some won't mind this inclusion, but a lot of folks will probably feel cheated.Overall, I recommend this book, but every reader +deserves+ a heads up about this bizarre, misplaced doll parade.

This is an excellent and timely narrative for all who want to learn how to achieve balance in their lives. As one suffering both grief and physical health challenges right now I find this instruction along with qigong and acupuncture most helpful.

This book is very readable, and has great information in it. I'm currently working towards my acupuncture degree, and many of my textbooks are based on this book and others. It's greatly improved my understanding of Classical Chinese medicine to read this as a companion to my textbooks.

I'm so glad I bought this book! It may not be 100% accurate or scholar-worthy but its still a nice and informative read. Reading Huang Di's Neijing Suwen isn't only for people who are interested in medicine, but also for helping you live a healthier lifestyle. Understanding the ideas and taking better care of yourself, as holistic as it may seem, will help prolong your youth and lead to a healthier elderly life. Once I'm finish with this book and improve my own Chinese, I'll consider reading a more scholarly/direct translation :)For now, this is more than enough for me and the English translation is easy/smooth to read. I thought it would be more broken up or corny due to cultural differences but it's actually pretty good!

Bought this for my very artistic 13 yo daughter. She's forever asking, "What should I draw?" I crossed my fingers when I ordered this, as we've tried many other books to inspire her that didn't. When I gave it to her, I was expecting a lukewarm response. However, as she thumbed through the book, she started giggling and smiling and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I even got a spontaneous hug. She ran to the door when her dad got home to show him the book. And I think that the 642 options may just keep her inspired for a few weeks! ;) Any book that can charm a 13 yo girl is a keeper in my book!

Either the description has changed, or I didn't read it closely enough. I think I got this as a lightening deal, or an "add on", so maybe I didn't even read the description. That's on me... but also seems like it could be common (hence the three stars.) I was looking for more of a guide on how to draw those 648 small things, and thought they'd be cute additions to my doodling.IF you are looking for a list of tiny things to draw, with a space in which to draw them... ...then this book would be perfect for you. It is small enough to pop into your purse, or maybe even your inner coat pocket.I donated this to a local school, hoping they'll get use out of it.

My daughter saw this in a store and thought it was pretty neat. I found it on Amazon and purchased this as a stocking stuffer. It is a small book and the pages inside give ideas and space to draw things on a very small scale. I thought this would be good practice for my daughter as she gets stuck sometimes in "her style" without branching out and she can struggle with proportions. She hasn't used it yet but as soon as she gets some down time I'm sure she will. This is a pretty thick book and each page has space for drawing 3 to 4 items.

I am mildly disappointed with this book. Neat ideas but the book is less than half the size of the original, and it is the same price. In my mind $10 for a blank book is already a stretch anyway, but a tiny book like this? I am not keen on the tiny size, it is awkward for bigger hands, I understand that it is about tiny things, and it is quirky and cute but that does not necessarily translate into practical and enjoyable.

This is a really fun little book. It fits in my purse so I always travel with it. Great at bars or parties when the mood lulls, or while riding public transportation. I have the larger version and I was very excited when I heard it was coming out in this pocket edition.

I used to draw when I was younger and have been wanting to get back into it. This is a great little book that tells you what to draw and gives you space to draw it. It's small and would easily fit into a purse. It has some really creative prompts. I really love it!

My beautiful girlfriend loves to draw.my wall is full of her art but as of late she's been working a lot and spending her down time with me so she hasn't been able to draw much and I wanted to get her something that can bring back her flair for drawing again and this is it! She rides the buss to work and this tiny book she can't take with her anyplace she goes and on her lunch breaks at work she can just whip it out and draw a little. The ideas in this book are great and not to hard so you don't have to sit over it and think to much you just draw.the first day it came she drew a music box and a cats eye and a jellyfish tentacle.i want her to be creative and learn deferent new ways to draw and have fun at the same time.love this book and will be getting her the bigger ones now that I know she likes it.

Love this book! So many crazy things to draw. Some things you can draw literally and they turn out pretty funny. Pocket sized and great for a trip. I was looking for something to entertain myself while recovering from an injury and this little book provided so much fun. Every little picture you can take to whatever level you want whether its a sketch or a full on art project. Compared to other books like this, this one leaves a lot up for interpretation so i really enjoyed that.

OMGoodness. I FINALLY found time to sit and read through this new book Easy Keto Desserts. (I bought the Kindle Version, I always buy Kindle Version books, but I MAY also order the hard copy too!). This book is DA-BOMB! First of all...READ the whole first part (before the recipes)...SO much good information! I have been doing LCHF for 11 months, and it's been HARD! I got fat and pre-diabetic by eating...you guessed it...DESSERTS! So, when I went LCHF, I tried to go "cold turkey" and cut out all desserts and sweets. (Many people say that is the way to go). Well, I couldn't do it. Of course, technically I COULD do it, but I missed my sweets and was miserable. Then I found All Day I Dream About Food.com. There are a handful of other good websites too, but Carolyn's is hands down THE BEST one I've found. This cookbook looks like it will be just an extension of that greatness. Oh, and the last part of the book where Carolyn tells how to rescue mistakes is PRICELESS. I never, ever thought of doing anything with my many ruined low carb baking attempts (but never have I had a recipe from Carolyn's other cookbooks or from her website fail) So, Carolyn...whatever you are paying yourself, double it. Whatever you are charging for your cookbooks...double it. You've made LCHF very possible for me, and for that, I TRULY thank you. (and just FYI, I was prediabetic when I started, now my A1C is much lower (in the middle of the "normal" range") and my Endocrinologist told me that I have the "labs of a runner". I'm 54, and slowly but surely I'm losing weight, and my blood sugars are totally fine now...no diabetes for me!

I have NEVER written a review for any cookbook but boy I must stop and write one for this. The cookbook is so elegantly put together. There is a picture for EVERY recipe. The pictures are beautiful. I canâ€™t wait to start baking!!!!!

Carolyn does it again!!! I now have all three of Carolyn's books and I love them all so much I also have them on Kindle so I can plan my menu and have my shopping list at all times. This cook book follows suit with her other two books. Beautiful pictures, super easy to follow directions and all of her recipes in her book give all the macros! There are a lot of dairy free options in the book too. This book too is the epitome of easy! Most of these recipes can be whipped up in no time when you are craving a treat! My whole family is Keto so giving them desserts is very important in order to keep them happy and this book makes them very happy! My son and daughter have already looked through this and have lots of requests! So into the kitchen I go!!

Carolyn Ketchum does the BEST desserts! It's how I found her blog in the first place. If your low carbing and your missing desserts, here's the book for you. I can't wait to try the butterscotch pudding and the butter cake. I know if I need a dessert for a special occasion I can always count on a "Carolyn recipe" to come through. Her crockpot cakes are delicious and couldn't be easier! You won't be sorry! GET THIS BOOK!!

Carolyn Ketchum makes eating healthier so much easier for me. As a Type 2 Diabetic I have worked very hard to change my eating habits. I have been very successful and feel very fortunate to have found these amazing, yet pretty simple, recipes. I own each of Ketchum's cookbooks and have bought extras to give as gifts. This is my latest cookbook (Easy Keto Desserts) and I think this may be my favorite of all my cookbooks! If you are new to KETO you will enjoy how she gives basic baking tips. She also tells you if you must use the sweetener she lists or if the food will turn out fine using your preferred sweetener. This particular cookbook has recipes for candy, frozen desserts, cookies and bars, puddings, crusts, sauces, and more. There are also some dairy free options included. If you want to see more about the author and check out some of her other recipes (not found in this book) you can find her blog All Day Long I Dream of Food or check her out on Facebook in the group All Day Long I Dream Low Carb. This seriously is a game changer!

This is a very well written cookbook! Along with some absolutely delicious desserts there is a wealth of information included! Carolyn explains in detail how different ingredients work to have the most success with your baking! She also includes a lot of dairy free options as well and I have personally made many of these and I dare say...you'd never know they were! I have never had a fail with any of her recipes! She is definitely the Keto Baking Queen!

Easy Keto Desserts is a must have in your arsenal of healthy eating! Carolyn Ketchum does a fantastic job of bringing good taste and good for you eating together in an easy to read (and lovely to drool over) book.Not only does she bring it! when it comes to recipes, she has valuable information on the Keto lifestyle, products, tools, and helpful tips and storage for each delicious dessert.

I just received Mrs. Ketchum's latest cookbook today. So far was only able to quickly flip through it but I think I would like to make absolutely everything in it. She is a fantastic cook and cookbook author. The recipes don't have mile long lists of ingredients and it doesn't take hours to make them. The pictures are beautiful and help so much to see what the outcome should look like. I am going to start off by making her brownies tomorrow. I have her two other books and thank my stars every day that I found her. She and Kyndra Holley make my days. All the other keto cookbooks I have come across just don't cut it.

I made the mistake of purchasing this printing of C.S. Lewis' book without checking reviews. Although the book written by C.S. Lewis is a good one, I would encourage buyers of this book to purchase one from a different publisher. This edition was very difficult to read, because it has many, many typographical errors, uses very small font size that is hard to read, and on every page, substitutes parts of words with symbols or the wrong letters, and occasionally leaves out words altogether. There is no editor or publishing house mentioned in the book itself.

Take note - this product is "print to order" which means that when you order, it is printed and shipped out.Mine has a production date of November 4, 2016.Unfortunately, there are several attributable flawsSurprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life which make this a poorly produced item. The first printed page contains a simple listing of the content and a forward by C.S.L.1 - There are no page numbers2 - The typeset and layout are fatiguing to the reader with indistinct paragraphs and only vague chapter divisions with no break in pagination.3 - There are many typos and "orphaned" words and sentences. I counted five on the 12th printed page alone.I suggest you seek a standard published and printed version of the book.

I only give this two stars to represent the content itself being very good - otherwise I would give it one. I rarely take the time to review books, as a busy Mom of four, I barely get time to read them much less review them. But I thought customers should know this book is strangely and terribly printed. If there are other reviews saying this then I guess I should have read them. It has missing words, missing or wrong punctuation, numbers in the place of letters sometimes..! What?? I can still make out the story so I will deal with it, but it sure is annoying. I have attached a couple photos so you can play the see-how-many-typos-you-can-find game. Undoubtedly more than in this hurried review. It's like a college paper before any edits, typed in haste and delirious from lack of sleep... Order from another seller and enjoy intriguing autobiographical writing from dear old Jack (Lewis).

"But what, in conclusion, of Joy? For that, after all, is what the story has mainly been about. To tell you the truth, the subject has lost nearly all interest for me since I became a Christian." From final page of Surprised by Joy.This book describes C. S. Lewis's intellectual journey from Atheism to Christianity, and how the felt experience he calls Joy led him there. After conversion, the Joy that once made everything else in his life pale in comparison became a subject of disinterest to Lewis. His pursuit of the pearl of great price seems to end in an existential malaise. Was Joy just a cosmic bait-and-switch?Lewis's journey begins with early experiences that produced in his imagination "an unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any satisfaction." (p. 18.) These inward experiences filled him with enormous bliss and created an inconsolable longing for something he knew not. The experiences would pass in a moment but they left behind "a longing for the longing that had just ceased" and "everything else that had ever happened to me was insignificant in comparison." (16.) Of this Joy, Lewis wrote that "the central story of my life is about nothing else." (17.)Yet, in connection with his final steps toward Christianity, "No kind of desire was present at all." (231.) Lewis did not attribute his eventual belief in Jesus as the Son of God to an intellectual or emotional decision, or even a determined will. Rather, he describes his conversion in existentialist terms: "[A] man is what he does; there is nothing of him left over or outside the act. As for what we commonly call Will, and what we commonly call Emotion, I fancy these usually talk too loud, protest too much, to be quite believed, and we have a secret suspicion that the great passion or the iron resolution is partly a put-up job." (237.)Looking back on Joy, Lewis wrote, "I now know that the experience, considered as a state of my own mind, had never had the kind of importance I once gave it. It was valuable only as a pointer to something other and outer." The experiences of Joy were relegated to the "lower life of the imagination." They conveyed no spiritual knowledge and imparted no spiritual life: "This lower life of the imagination is not a beginning of, nor a step toward, the higher life of the spirit, merely an image. In me, at any rate, it contained no element either of belief or of ethics; however far pursued, it would never have made me either wiser or better." (167.) No wonder, then, that the subject of Joy had lost nearly all interest for Lewis as a Christian.What leaves this book on a somewhat minor note is that Lewis never describes a real Christian spiritual experience that comes anywhere close to uplifting the soul as Joy did. Nowhere does Lewis speak of Christian experience that compared in any way to the Joy that had filled him with enormous bliss, created inconsolable longing, made all else insignificant in comparison, and of which he would say "the central story of my life is about nothing else." The book ends with the impression that the existential act of belief was the definitive mark of Lewis's Christian experience. There seemed to be no analog for Joy in his own Christianity as there was, for example, with Bernard of Clairvaux who could write: "We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread and long to feast upon Thee still We drink of Thee the Fountain Head and thirst our souls from Thee to fill"

C.S. Lewis gives an outstanding philosophical explanation of the consistency of the Christian world view and how miracles are consistent with such an outlook - and does it in such an engaging manner typical of his excellent writing skills. Some of the philosophical points are quite deep and illustrate the breadth and depth of C.S. Lewis's understanding of philosophy as well as his good acquaintance with the findings of modern science. The genius of C.S. Lewis is showing the unique and profound difference of the Christian message compared to other philosophies, presenting it in a very straightforward and understandable manner and showing how the overall consistency of this viewpoint meshes well with real experience. Whether someone accepts the message or not, I would think it would be difficult to argue against the coherency of the picture presented here.

The negativity of this rating has nothing to do with the work of CS Lewis and everything to do with the absence of editing. Typos and spelling errors absolutely plague this kindle edition. Considering the fact that most readers who are interested in this work have some familiarity with academic quality, I am surprised that such an edition found its way into the market at all. This is a poor decision on behalf of everyone involved with this publication.

Excellent. I have good mechanical skills but am not an engine expert by any means - change the oil, lifted my jeep, replaced outdrive bellows, that kinda stuff. I used this book to replace a broken intake manifold on an 5.7L GM â€œEnhanced Baseâ€ Marine Engine, Indmar 41000 from Barr Marine, so probably the deepest I have been into an engine so far. I found the book very comprehensive, describing each step with good detail. The photos were very good, with useful markup/arrows/numbers where needed. I can see it is a challenge for a book of this type to cover several different variations of the same engine, and the authors handled it very well. My only minor recommendation is that some procedures that depend on other procedures refer to those other procedures by the chapter they are in; I submit that it would be better if they could refer to an actual page number as well. Not a biggie in the long run, as I just marked the pages and added my own references. I would definitely buy shop manuals from this publisher again.

Really helped me understand the inner working of my 1996 mastercraft with a 5.7L Indmar. I was chasing down problems like crazy to no end.Then I got the book, followed the diagnostic procedures and I got back out on the water. Take their advice, 80% of problems are FUEL related.While it was full of a lot of information, the index leaves a bit to be desired. Finding out specifics about certain things can take some digging through the chapters. Also the information the ECU acts on is not super clear, you have to interpret a couple things from different chapters. What would REALLY help is if the authors included some part numbers OR the exact model car you should look up for references.

Very good reference source for maintaining an older boat.

As expected, very detailed, would recommend to everyone

This is a very handy reference to have. I have a 1994 Mastercraft ProStart 205 and it has been useful. Only complaint is that you cannot order one more specifically geared to a particular model, but still quite helpful.

It would be nice if they could update it to include things about ethanol, and better winterizing info. Good to have.

Self-effacing even when he boasts about his magic skills, which he developed with endless practice, Alex Stone tells enough about the techniques of magicians for us to get it without revealing too many secrets (which he has done elsewhere, he says) or getting too technical. He uses the story of his years of evolution as a magic technician and entertainer to shed light on what science has learned about attention, memory, why we love to be fooled and why it is so easy. He makes the research of neurobiologists as fascinating as the work of street scam artists, explaining in the process why drivers using cell phones are as impaired as if they were drunk. His trip down a rabbit hole from physics Ph.D. candidate to professional magician is the unifying theme that carries the book along through many wonderful side trips.

This book operates on two levels. The first is the autobiography of a magician, telling a tale from being gonged off stage at the â€œMagic Olympicsâ€ through a rising obsession with the craft before rolling into his redemption. On a second level, itâ€™s a history of magic in the modern age (although there are occasional forays into more ancient history.) The author tells of the magicians that inspired him, some of whom he learned from personally and some were from the preceding generation, such as Dai Vernonâ€”the magician who actually fooled Houdini. However, the bookâ€™s title doesnâ€™t come from Vernonâ€™s feat with the Ambitious Card Trick, but is instead a more general statement about the challenge of tricking magiciansâ€”an accomplishment a great deal more prestigious than fooling a pod of eight year olds at little Timmyâ€™s birthday party.Stone was a science writer turned Physics graduate student, and so the science of magic and mentalism comes out frequently. However, this book is distinct from one such as â€œSleights of Mindâ€ by Macknik & Martinez-Conde, which is focused entirely upon conveying the science of how magic tricks work (primarily neuroscience with a focus on how the sense organs and brain interact to a magicianâ€™s advantage.) In truth, I expected this book to more along the lines of â€œSleights of Mind.â€ However, in a way, itâ€™s a good thing that it wasnâ€™t. Stone reviews the science that Macknik and Martinez-Conde drill down into enough so that itâ€™s a good review if one has read that book (I had) or an introduction if one hasnâ€™t. What Stone does a great deal more of is describing the perfection oneâ€™s craft. Along the way he shows us a blind card handler with a preternatural capacity for tactile control of the deck, he takes us to clown college to improve showmanship, and he meets up with some street hustlers of the 3-card monte variety.Throughout the course of the book are ups and downs that maintain the tension. In fact, one chapter is actually entitled â€œItâ€™s Annoying and I Asked You to Stop,â€ about the inevitable point at which a magicianâ€™s obsession with improving his/her skills stops being cute to loved ones. There is also a chapter about Stoneâ€™s [almost] being blackballed from the magic community for revealing secrets in a general readership magazine (I guess thatâ€™s a muggle-mag?) An important part of the story is Stoneâ€™s search for a Yoda, a wizened member of the magic community who can give him the deeper insight needed to fool a room of experts. He eventually finds said individual, but is not quickly adopted. (It has a heroâ€™s journey feel through this part.)I thought that the author did a good job of building an interesting story arc within a work of nonfiction. This increases the bookâ€™s readability, particular if one has no particular interest in magic. One need not be knowledgeable about the discipline to find the story interesting and to learn some fascinating tidbits. If nothing else, one will learn how con men cull marks, so one can avoid falling prey to their potent psychology (though I expect the subset of readers of books and those tricked into gambling 3-card monte is probably not huge.)One area in which a reader might be dissatisfied is in the coverage given to mentalism and math-based tricks. The alliterative subtitle makes reference to â€œmagicians, mentalists, and math geeksâ€¦â€ but the bulk of the book is about close-up magic; mentalism and mathematical methods donâ€™t come in until the last few chapters. If youâ€™re expecting that the coverage of those topics will be on par with that of close-up magic, this may not be the book for you. Still, while this was different than I expected, it didnâ€™t hurt my impression of the book.I enjoyed this book, and received some intriguing insights from it. Iâ€™d recommend it for those interested in magic and in particular the craft and science of it. Even if you arenâ€™t that interested in magic, you might find the story of one manâ€™s development of his discipline to be worth reading.

I've been impressed by memory competitors, pool sharks and a poker playing odyssey or two, but I had no idea that magic and the members that make up this community could be so entertaining.The great thing about Fooling Houdini is that you learn the history, the nuance and the skill involved in many forms of magic, but what Alex Stone has done beyond that is tell his story of defeat at a high-profile magic competition (yes, they exist) and the journey that experience put him on as he searched high and low to perfect his magic routine and take a shot at redemption. Imagine "Rounders" less Teddy KGB and the violence, and you get a sense of the very cool story Stone tells in his equal parts memoir and magic primer.Going from his defeat at The Magic Olympics to magic school and discussing card cheats, the Three Card Monte, the art of stealing watches, the power of mentalists and everything in between, Stone has a historians eye for the telling detail and a journalist's gift of making it all fit neatly together to serve the larger purpose of telling his compelling story. What I really enjoyed was Stone's honesty when things didn't go his way and yet you get a sense of the power of magic to not only engulf his everyday life, but the reasons that it did. Stone writes that no one applauds the 10,000 hours of practice, but I do applaud a job well done and recommend this book highly.

As a 1L, these case briefs have made my life significantly easier when it comes to figuring out if my own briefs are covering everything that is relevant to the cases. I wouldn't say these are absolutely necessary or will guarantee you an A, but they're definitely super helpful when you're trying to figure out if you're on the right track. Plus the analysis section of the case briefs help give you a concrete example of how you should go about analyzing cases.

The only explanation I can reckon is that these briefs were made deliberately awful to punish law students who rely on them instead of doing the reading. So often they leave out crucial facts of the case, overlook important arguments that the courts make, and dramatically oversimplify the ones that are included. Do not rely on these briefs for anything more than a cursory refresher or brief primer.

This Book helped me out alot during my first year at Law School.

Some of the briefs made no sense or just terribly written. What a waste of money. Amazon reviews do not seem truthful these days. Whoever gave this 4+ stars must have failed civ pro.

Not very helpful because the briefs are oversimplified, and and not what my professors are looking for.

I am a fan of the author and have read her other three books in her original Joanna Stafford The Crown series. My mother always said never to judge a book by its cover, but I loved this cover -- I was really drawn to it, and I really loved this book. The Blue, her fourth novel, definitely doesn't disappoint. The book is well-researched. As a lover of historical fiction, that is something I really appreciate. The Blue actually transported me to another place and time with a little bit of romance and a lot of suspense. The main character, Genevieve, who dreams of being an artist, feels she is not being taken seriously in the male-dominated art world in London. She then becomes involved with the world of fine porcelain and industrial espionage and that's when things really get interesting!!!! This character is strong and well-drawn and the suspenseful plot kept me up into the wee hours, neglecting my more mundane responsibilities. Definitely my favorite historical fiction read of 2018.

The term refugee as we know it was first applied to the Huguenots who fled France. Google has graphs of the density of use of certain words. The graph for refugee starts with a few slim uses in the 18th century and slowly climbs in importance. By 2010, the year the graph ends, it was near the top of the chart. Just one of the many ways that Bilyeau smoothly and seamlessly creates a set of characters that somehow manage to survive a compelling plot (this reader stayed up to the point of collapse two nights in a row in order to finish the book) and yet get us to reflect on the cultural tensions we live in today.Because with the refugee comes exile. With artistic vocation, the necessity to produce artistic work that can sell. With a religious conscience, the struggle with temptation. With desire, passion and ambition, the need for dissimulation, discretion, and compromise.Letâ€™s start with Genevieve. A woman artist who canâ€™t even apprentice herself to a seasoned artist. There is just no approved way for her to learn. A dashing aristocratic spy sucks her in to his web of intrigue with the promise that she will be able to pursue the life of artistic creation she longs for. Thus begins an edge-of-the seat narrative in which Genevieveâ€™s religious beliefs â€” and the ethical code she has derived from her religion â€” are put repeatedly to the test.No less artistic is the mysterious Thomas Sturbridge, an artist whoâ€™s art manifests itself through chemicals. Like the dashing spy, Sturbridge just wants the space and resources he needs to create. He shares an obsession for the color blue with many other characters in the novel, including two kings. But not just any blue: the blue, a transcendent blue, a blue that makes the viewer weep and think of heaven and repent their sins. His is a pragmatic philosophy, a philosophy that refuses to see the world as divided into two camps.In spite of his easy-going nature, his pragmatism, his genius and his physical beauty, or perhaps become of those things, Thomas Sturbridge, the tragic chemist. and Genevieve find themselves at the center of knottier and knottier web of intrigues and betrayals.The catalyst for all this backstabbing (sometimes literal!) and cloak-and-dagger escapes is porcelain, that most seductive of commodities â€” at least to the 18th century eye. Bilyeau manages to reach across time and make the reader feel our ancestorâ€™s lust for the smooth, white product of mud and fire and the colors and images it is decorated with.
