This is an excellent narrative, compelling to read. It includes a thorough character study of each of the pilots and others involved in competing for the Ortieg prize. Their later lives and careers are also noted. Many individuals important to the story are not generally known today. All had an influence on the rapid development of the aviation industry. The text is superbly researched, including a chronology and extensive list of original sources.

What an extremely readable historical novel!....Mr. Jackson's detailed account of one of the most important sagas in aviation history is a delight! a must read for anyone who is remotely interested in aviation history....The story brings out numerous behind-the -scenes anecdotes which were previously unknown or forgotten.......

Excellant background story of all the attempts to cross the Atlantic that spring in 1927. Could have used a few more pictures of the aircraft that are written about but are forgotten today.

The world was mesmerized when Charles Lindbergh made his successful nonstop solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927. Suddenly, the unthinkable became not only thinkable, but doable. No less captivating and praiseworthy, however, were the exploits - mostly unsuccessful and in some cases tragic - of other aviators, including female aviators, who also tried to conquer the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh's triumph overshadowed these other risk-takers and groundbreakers. And for even the most avid aviation aficionados, there is a tendency to overlook them.Fortunately, Joe Jackson in Atlantic Fever: Lindbergh, His Competitors and the Race to Cross the Atlantic has brought them back to life in exquisite and fascinating detail. Rene Fonck, Richard Byrd, Clarence Chamberlin, Floyd Bennett, Bert Acosta, Francesco de Pinedo, Charles Nungesser, Ruth Elder, and a host of others including Lindbergh...they're all here. The reader is put squarely in the middle of all the action surrounding their flights, along with their historical and chronological contexts. For example, we learn about Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini through the successes of de Pinedo. We're given insight into President Calvin Coolidge through his recognition - or lack of - of the members of Charles Levine's "Columbia" flight team. And did Byrd really reach the North Pole in 1926?In addition, the genius of aircraft designers Igor Sikorsky, Anthony Fokker, and Giuseppe Bellanca is highlighted. A bonus is the explanation in layman's terms of such aeronautical phenomena like "ground effect".Jackson finishes off Atlantic Fever - a book filled primarily with drama, rancor, and disappointment - on a comical and somewhat uplifting note. In 1938 in a plane that was barely flyable, Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan took off in a fog from New York, thinking he was heading west to Los Angeles. Twenty-six hours later, he landed in Dublin, Ireland. Oh well, oftentimes it's not only perseverance, preparation, and ability that make history and result in progress, but a bit of good fortune as well. After reading this fine, fast-paced historical work, you might find yourself asking, "Charles who?"

After hearing about "Atlantic Fever" during an author interview on NPR, I decided to buy it on Kindle. If anything, Joe Johnson was far better in print than in an interview. He analyzed the competition to be the first to fly from New York to Paris to win the Orteig Prize in the 1920s and the people involved--the aviators, the promoters, the engine manufacturers, and the airframe manufacturers. What we have taken for granted since May 30, 1939 (when Pan Am started regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic flights) was a new field in the 1920s, when primitive aircraft, weather conditions, pilot fatigue, and navigation techniques were the major obstacles to long-distance flight.I'd recommend this book to all audiences who can read it, from junior high school on up. Well-written history can become habit-forming!

This was a historic block of time brought to life quite nicely. The in-fighting, jealousies and the thin, fine line that divides heroism from sheer stupidity were well illustrated, along with the politics of the time. Much of what I read I never knew, and that in itself, made the book worthwhile.

Well written account of the times and people involved in early flying across the Atlantic. Many interesting side episodes are included

excellent bood, great insights that I never knew
