In 1943 i find my way back home as of a miracle.

The true story of a little little Polish boy on the run from the Germans and their collaborators during World War II. He's Jewish, of course. The story is powerful enough for one to ot be able to put the book down in any case, but it's also written rather well and seems to spare no effort and letting you into the experience of this kid. He really had courage and grit and stamina. I'd have given up by day three.Wonderful for children to read as well because it's not just compelling but inspiring.I only discovered later that there's a Polish movie on this story.

A very moving true story of a young Jewish boy escaping capture by the Germans. His experiences both in the forest and in working for several Polish farmers are amazing. I purchased a copy for my ten year old grandson. Children today in America have such an easy life and need to understand that all can fall apart. Children need to understand about other children who do go hungry and are force to eat things that are gross.I highly recommend the book.

I found this book a bit "easy" for me, but I think it would be perfect for a tween who is looking to explore the Holocaust. I was quite pleased to discover it was based on a real child - like "A Diary of Anne Frank," I think this adds to its charm. Ilene Beckerman, a few years ago thrilled readers when she told the story of her life through her clothes in the book Love, Loss and What I Wore. In Ms. Beckerman's second book,What We Do for Love, she wrote about her courtship, marraige, divorce and remarraige. And now in her latest book, Mother of the Bride, this witty and poignant author describes to her readers the true story of what it means to be the mother of the bride.And what a fun and insightful book this turns out to be. Because nestled between the quest for a suitable mother of the bride dress and a menu which won't cause indigestion, and other stress factors which are off the Richter scale, the author also tells us what it means to raise a daughter and watch her walk down the aisle towards her own married life. What every mother thinks she longs for becomes bittersweet for Ms. Beckerman as her days as an important Mommy to her daughter are now replaced by her daughter's Prince Charming.I not only loved the words Ilene Beckerman wrote but the clever illustrations she did to depict events and her feelings. And I especially like the way she summed up this event at the end by saying that, "the planning took a year, the ceremony took 20 minutes, the wedding recpetion was four hours long and I'd do it again in a heartbeat." Actually Ms. Beckerman has two other daughters so hopefully she got to do this again or will be doing it in the near future.As I closed this book I thought how much I am looking forward to my turn as the mother of the bride when our daughter finds her Mr. Right. For now I am conetnt to clutch Ms. Beckerman's book in hand and dream of a long aisle and wishes for health and happiness as our daughter is married.

This is a cookie book. It's fun and sweet and quick. It really isn't a full book but it is certainly worth the read and it's delightfully illustrated. I don't usually use the word "delightfully" but it seems to work for this book. I especially recommend it for mothers of brides. It's laugh out loud funny and then you have to get a Kleenex. The format is unique and I liked it. James Thurber would have loved it. I would recommend it as a gift for a friend as soon as she tells you her daughter is getting married. She'll appreciate it.

This is my fourth Ilene Beckerman book, and I always love them. I enjoy her writing style, and her illustrations are icing on the cake. I truly wish she'd write more books!

My younger daughter just set a date for her wedding so when I ran across this book I decided it might be interesting. Although humorous, there is so much that touches my heart. It also reminded me not to go overboard when my daughter plans HER wedding.

My soon-to-be-married daughter gave this to me last year. I laughed, I cried, I loved this book. Then I bought it for two friends last month. They loved it, too! A light-hearted look at being "Mother of the Bride"!

Cute, quick read. Entertaining, not informing, but it does lighten the burden a bit.

This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.

Seriously one of the cutest comics I've ever read - love the art and love the concept of cute queer bakers in space!

There's a whole new subgenre of graphic novel / comics about food game shows in SF settings. This is one of the best.

Absolutely delightful, I didn't want it to end.

incredibly charming! riess is a great comics artist and it shows.

The art was super colorful and interesting, lots of space food puns, and the ending left me starving for more!

Love the plot, the artwork, and the characters. But with such an emotional cliffhanger I am afraid to get the next book!

Fun comic especially for those who like competitive cooking shows.

Fun graphic novel duology with a queer girl main character, about an intergalactic high-stakes cooking competition reality show. I'd felt lukewarm about the pitch for this because I've never really watched cooking shows, but I'm so glad I got over myself and gave it a shot. Peony, a baker from Earth, gets picked to compete in an elimination-style cooking program. The competition is much more brutal and backstabbing than she'd imagined, threatening not only her dreams for the prize but her budding romance with fellow chef Neptunia. Totally satisfying "underdog wins the day with help from her friends" story. My son (nine at the time) fell for this instantly. Can't wait to see what Riess does next.

First book in a new series and it was a fun, clever and funny read. NYC resident Raven Lattice Marigold, granddaughter to Rosemary Lattice Marigold, has inherited her grandmother's tea shop, located In Paramour Bay, in the middle of Connecticut's coastline. To claim the tea shop as well as all her grandmother's possessions, Raven must run the tea shop and remain in Paramour Bay for one year. If that wasn't odd enough, Raven discovers the dead body of her grandmother's attorney in her store room. But wait, it wasn't her grandmother's attorney. There is a handsome sheriff, a cat with an attitude that can appear and disappear, a Lurch type man who lives behind her grandmother's house...and Raven discovers she's a witch. So who was the dead man? Why was he murdered? Is she in danger as well? Can Raven keep her mother from finding out about her returning to Paramour Bay and her inheritance? A totally enjoyable read. I look forward to the characters and the rest of all the witchy fun in this series.

This book was terribly disappointing. I wanted to like it and the premise sounded great. Unfortunately, the style and finesse is closer to a high school freshman creative writing class project. The book is written in first person and addresses the reader as “you” and in “I know what you’re thinking”. No, no she really doesn’t.Factually, I was confused. Why does the protagonist own a car if she was born and raised in New York City? Comparatively few native New Yorkers bother to learn how to drive, much less own a car in the city. The part where she even owned a car would make her privileged, so I didn’t ‘get’ why she acted like the fact that it was an older car meant her life was sad or bad. Then the protagonist is flabbergasted that the town she is in has 911. 93% of the U.S. has 911 services. Again, if she were from NYC, she would simply use 911 and accept it as the norm rather than expressing shock and disbelief. Has she never been outside of the city before now? When she calls her mother, she acts more like she is 19 than 29, whinging about going to college. Again, NY has the CUNY system that is extremely affordable. It would have been nice if the author knew anything about NYC. Casual fans of Sex in the City have a more nuanced understanding than this author.The plot hinges on the protagonist inheriting her grandmother’s house and tea shop. Somehow Google doesn’t exist in this book as she says that she doesn’t know anything about tea, but also recognizes a plant used for tea on sight, but then accuses a customer of trying to buy drugs because they have buy a custom tea blend. It’s inane. When she meets the neighbour, she is so shocked that a stranger would speak to her that she looks for a weapon and plans to run away. As a flight of fancy, it would be hilarious if all New Yorkers screamed and ran away every time they saw a stranger. The entire city would cease function.In as much as it takes fully 30% of the book to get through the first 18 hours in town, I gave up. The protagonist stutters and shouts without listening to anyone or paying attention to anything. I couldn’t take another page.

Raven Lattice Marigold inherits a tea shop and house from her estranged grandmother and moves to Paramour Bay which is located on the Connecticut coastline. In order for Raven to receive the inheritance, she has to live in Paramour Bay and keep the business going for one year. Not everyone is happy with this move, especially Raven's Mother. You see, Raven is a witch but she doesn't know that because she hasn't come into her powers yet.There is a cat (Raven's familiar) who stayed behind after Raven's grandmother passed (Rosemary Lattice Marigold) to help Raven learn about her abilities, a handsome sheriff, and a man who lives in a shed behind Raven's inherited cottage.The story starts quickly when Raven discovers a dead body in her Tea Shop's store room. Then Raven thinks she might be going crazy because the cat that was her grandmother's is talking in her head!!!A fun read; and I went on to purchase the second book in the Series "Bewitching Blend" as soon as I finished!!!

Cute premise that is poorly executed. The main character is immature and whiny, the plot (if you can call it that) moves as fast as a sleepy turtle, and the whole thing is just plain boring. Even the cat (a witch's familiar with short-term memory loss) is a dud. You couldn't pay me to read any more of this series.

This is a cozy with magic and a handsome sheriff thrown in. Raven inherits area shop and cottage from her grandmother with the stipulation that she must keep the business going for one full year. Upon arriving at the tea shop she promptly finds a dead body. While the plot is familiar, the characters are fun. Raven discovers that she is a witch and her world turns upside down. There are enough suspects to keep it interesting with an unexpected twist at the end. Cozy lovers will definitely like this one.

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. The beginning was fairly slow and seemed to drag, so I wasn't sure if I was willing to continue. I did persevere, and by the end I actually enjoyed reading it. There were some interesting spots, and there are some relationships hinted at that I assume will be carried forward and addressed in future books. I do think it's worth reading, but you have to get to the 2nd half of the book for it to start getting really interesting.

I would especially recommend these magical stories to my 17 year old granddaughter. Magical blend a new witch just coming into her own. Great characters, funny and touching interactions between them. really funny talking cat that is moderately demented. No sexual innuendos. I very much appreciate an author that can still tell a good story without the filthy. Thank you Ms. Layne.

This is an excellent narrative, compelling to read. It includes a thorough character study of each of the pilots and others involved in competing for the Ortieg prize. Their later lives and careers are also noted. Many individuals important to the story are not generally known today. All had an influence on the rapid development of the aviation industry. The text is superbly researched, including a chronology and extensive list of original sources.

Excellant background story of all the attempts to cross the Atlantic that spring in 1927. Could have used a few more pictures of the aircraft that are written about but are forgotten today.

After hearing about "Atlantic Fever" during an author interview on NPR, I decided to buy it on Kindle. If anything, Joe Johnson was far better in print than in an interview. He analyzed the competition to be the first to fly from New York to Paris to win the Orteig Prize in the 1920s and the people involved--the aviators, the promoters, the engine manufacturers, and the airframe manufacturers.What we have taken for granted since May 30, 1939 (when Pan Am started regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic flights) was a new field in the 1920s, when primitive aircraft, weather conditions, pilot fatigue, and navigation techniques were the major obstacles to long-distance flight.I'd recommend this book to all audiences who can read it, from junior high school on up. Well-written history can become habit-forming!

This was a historic block of time brought to life quite nicely. The in-fighting, jealousies and the thin, fine line that divides heroism from sheer stupidity were well illustrated, along with the politics of the time. Much of what I read I never knew, and that in itself, made the book worthwhile.

Well written account of the times and people involved in early flying across the Atlantic. Many interesting side episodes are included
