Caldwell B. Esselstyn, JR., M.D., was a researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic for more than thirty-five years. In 1991, he served as the president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and organized the first National Conference on the Elimination of Heart Disease. In 2005, he became the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine. I am off all cholesterol meds (3) and my weight has come off. Get off the oil, and animal proteins and reverse the arteriosclerosis. If meat and oil are more important than heart health, then this book is not for you. Hopefully you will survive your first heart attack, and then this book will have greater value in your life. I am very thankful to Dr. Esselstyn and his wife Anne for all there dedication and being bold to stand for healing, health, rather than being a pawn in the AMA monetary machine.

This book saved my life. I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire. I was 52 years old then. I started the change recommended here in this book. Today, I am on no medicine today. I have lost 18 kgs but the most important fact is that my body composition report says 18% total fat, 9 % visceral fat, and 30 years internal ageing - consistently. These facts do not lie so anyone with heart problem, close your eyes and embrace Dr. Esselstyn's wisdom. I am not particularly religious but I would still say " God Bless Him " !

This is my first review on Amazon.I just turned 51. I have exercised since our first gym membership in 1978. I have worked out extensively. I have 2 bikes I ride regularly. I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. I have eaten what I thought was a healthy diet. Take vitamins every day. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I felt like I really needed to eat. Ate some greek yogurt and strawberries. Still didn't feel right. I laid down with a fan blowing on me. I felt overheated. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Strange. Swallowed an aspirin. Noticed my arm was a little more numb. Chewed an aspirin. Then, I thought to myself "If I don't get off of the floor, I may never get up". Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house.45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. Wake up call.The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. He cleared that and put in a stent. Then, below that blockage was a 70% blockage. Cleared and stent. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. He can't put in a stent because it's too dangerous. Have to clear it with diet. I tell you all of this to give you the back-story. I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. I found this book. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. The results have been amazing! Today, we have been on a plant-based diet for 4 weeks. A lot of these reviews will tell you to just try it for a month. Good advice. Just do that and see what happens.Here are my cholesterol numbers. My numbers from the first day at the hospital are 4/08/13. Last week, after 3 weeks of the plant diet, I had my blood tested again. That was 5/28/13.Total Cholesterol- was 271, now 120, should be under 200, or 150 to be heart attack proof.LDL or bad cholesterol- was 206, now 68, should be under 100.Cholesterol/HDL ratio was 5.2, now 3.2, Men: 5.0 is average.Triglycerides-was 81, now 90, should be under 150.I have lost 11 pounds in 4 weeks. My wife has lost 8 pounds. She has had IBS all of her life. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. She used to have them all the time. Our energy levels have never been better. My mind is sharper than ever. You feel so much better, lighter, cleaner. It's hard to describe. Now, after a night's sleep, we wake up feeling like we slept, instead of waking up tired.A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. His Dad has been diabetic for a long time. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! Last week, after 2 weeks of plants, his blood sugar was 96! He has never had it that low.Get the book. Read it. Watch Forks Over Knives. Follow the guidelines. Tell your friends. It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!I hope this helps you with your decision.Todd

Five stars from me for critical information, recipes, and value. I've gone plant based since my doc decided he wanted to put me on a statin. I told him I wanted to research statins before I agreed to take his prescription.It didn't take much research to realize that one of the last things I would take is a statin. I suggest you do your own research concerning this scary med.I decided to change my diet to correct the high cholesterol. My doc said that I couldn't correct the problem via diet because I can't lower my age. Mmmm. So does that mean that everyone my age who has elevated cholesterol levels needs to take a statin? I certainly hope not -- because the side effects of statins are dangerous. Again, do your own research.Using the information in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I now eat a plant-based diet, which I've been on for a couple of months now. My rule of thumb is this: If it had a mother and a father (beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc.), I don't eat it. If it came from something that had a mother and a father (eggs, cows'/goats' milk, etc), I don't eat it. Again, do your own research.Since I've been eating plant-based foods only -- and there's a LOT to choose from -- my blood pressure has dropped, I've lost about 14 pounds, I sleep far more soundly, my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, etc. I will have to have a blood draw to check my cholesterol levels, but my guess is that it's down too.BOTTOM LINE: Buy this book. It could improve your health.UPDATE: I've now lost 20 pounds, and another blood draw revealed that my cholesterol level has dropped 30 points. My doc now says to keep doing whatever I'm doing. Bravo for plant-based eating!

It's a great board book because you can speak or sing the song lyrics, and there are many animals and other small details that you can point out to your child as you read to them. Naoko Stoop's illustrations will make you feel like a kid again.

This is one of my favorite books ever. I love it so much I’ve begun giving it to children who are baptized at our church. The illustrations are enchanting and it’s the lyrics to one of my favorite hymns.

My Dad was raving about this book and I had to get it via the UK. The book describes Ms. Dodwell's epic tour of the island.She has many interesting challenges and adventures during her time there. The problem is the book reads rather "flat" and dull.At one point she quotes from her diary, and it is far more lively and descriptive than the day to day account the book provides.True, it's a travel account, so it is what it is, but I have read others that were a little more spicy in the accounting.3 stars as it wasn't really a page turner and I had to struggle through it at times.

All is fine!!

Dodwell is a courageous adventurer, who traveled alone through Papua New Guinea. Her story is enthralling. I truly admire her!Read it for yourself. At any age, this book is great!

I bought this book because one of my great great uncles, Bruce Banks, was supposedly on this ship when it sank (he is listed as one of the passengers in the appendix). I was hoping to find more specific information about him. The most interesting thing about this book was the description of how much trouble the author went through to research it.

The story of the CLARA NEVADA is a fascinating yet little-known puzzle of Alaska/Yukon gold rush history. I've been interested in the story for a long time, but information on what happened has been extremely sparse, and often contradictory. Steven C. Levi researched the story and has created the most complete picture of what may have happened.The results are surprising. Southeast Alaska's waters are full of shipwrecks. Many of them are from the gold rush era, and it seems like every single one of them sank with a "fortune in gold" aboard. This has caused many of those who have described the wreck to any extent in the past to dismiss the gold that was known to be on board CLARA NEVADA as a false rumor, since it was never found. They dismiss "stories" of survivors and a wrecked lifeboat as rumors as well. Levi did the work, and has come up with an extremely plausible reconstruction of what likely happened. He tells it matter-of-factly, without over-the-top prose or hyperbole. The result is an excellent history mystery of the Gold Rush. It's a great read!

THE CLARA NEVADA is one of those rare books that on the surface seems to be a thesis, an academic investigation of an event of significance in history complete with photographs, immaculate documentation, and reportage by a fine reporter. And it is most assuredly all that. But that does not begin to explain the fascination author Steven C. Levi brings to this book. He makes this exploration of an event as fine as any mystery novel or suspense thriller, and it is about something of which very few of us are familiar. How many readers have heard of the ship Clara Nevada and its sole voyage in Alaska's Inland Passage?Levi opens his book about the mysterious ship Clara Nevada with a solid description of the 1896 discovery of gold in the Yukon River and the subsequent goldrush fever that swept the nation, bringing thousands of gold seekers to Seattle and points north to claim instant wealth. His discussion (and photographs) of the condition of these people willing to sacrifice all manner of comfort to pan gold is as colorful as any film would be! And those who owned the businesses of the newly discovered area of gold jumped into the fray and produced boats and means of travel etc to benefit form the madness. Among the ships was a 'reconditioned' wreck named the Clara Nevada and after boarding many passengers and supplies she set sail in bad weather in 1898 to take greedy men to the gold nuggets of the Yukon and Klondike rivers - and disappeared. Where did the bodies go, where did the gold on board go, where did the fate of a ship that eventually was spotted as a ghost ship become a fairytale? as the author states, 'The discovery of a survivor of the Clara Nevada disaster - and a significant individual at that - led to two obvious questions: how did C.H. Lewis survive and what happened to the $165,000. in raw gold? I was haunted by those questions. For two years, I checked archive holdings, government reports, diaries, personal correspondence, business records and court files and sent letters to genealogical societies and maritime museums.'Levi has spent years preparing his investigation and the results are here in this immensely readable book. It is a bit a Americana but it is also a vital document about a period in history we have all but forgotten. Steven C. This is worth buying if you play guitar and like the band. I bought this used which was a little pricey at 40 dollars for a used copy. I learned some of the first song in a matter of minutes. Its all in drop D tuned down 1/2 step to a flat . its all pretty simple music. some of the music shows chords and how to fret them. after tuning my acoustic down it sounds just like the cd so i think the tabs are correct but i havent been though the whole book yet so i will update my review once i have learned all the songs or most of them.

Book gives accurate and easy to read tabs and it delivered faster than expected! worthy purchase!

Days of the New started in a garage. They worked out into the world, of course, and now they have their own CD with their own tablature book. Simply being Travis Meeks (lead guitarist for the band) and being able to come up with so much beautiful music and melodies is something to be proud of. But writing out everything that he plays? Wow. The person who figured out what is being played doesn't even know Days of the New personally, he simply listened and wrote. And it's perfect. This book is based solely on guitar tablature notation, making it very simple to read and (yeah right) play. Many chords are also simply numbered out in a vertical line on the tabs. Hence, the uniform layout seems to present itself as a 5-star book. The references to tuning for guitarists on each song even goes as far back as the 3rd or 4th guitar. The only problem is that occasionally on repeats and non-solos, you must figure out what to play and how to play it by looking at the chord charts provided over the notation. Otherwise, it's a beautiful book that can help you to play New for Days.

I read this book for the schools summer reading program. I am a teacher and a former soccer player and coach. Even though the story as elements of fantasy and the supernatural, and is a sports story, it is, at its core, a story of family, of struggle, of growing up, and of giving back.The story is told as an interview between the world's best goalkeeper and a reporter. Through a long night of questions and answers, of fantastic stories and life growing up in the rain forest, the man who just helped his country win the biggest game in soccer, the World Cup final, tells the reporter, and US, the readers, what is truly important.A must read for soccer fans and sports fan. But also a great read for anyone who enjoys a story with a message.

This was an assigned book for my son’s summer reading. He ended up not liking it, so he switched assignments after starting this book. He said no matter how hard he tried, this book just couldn’t keep his interest and bored him. He’s 13.

This is not just for young adults as the back of the book implies. My son is a 16 year old select soccer player on a top ten team in the state of Washington and he loved it. So my wife read it and she liked it as well. So I read it and was surprised at how entertaining the story was. The mystical, or fantasy element wound around a very realistic story made for a great read. For those who actually play keeper (also called goalie or goalkeeper), the detailed scenes explaining how the keeper "reads" the leaning tendencies of the kicker as he shoots are incredible and actually taught my son, a midfielder, some things about shooting so as not to give away the direction of the shot. Keepers would get the same insights about shooters. And for those not into the esoterics of soccer you will surely enjoy the wonderful storyline of the underdog fighting through adversity.

The author shares his love and knowledge of this sport in a fantasy about a poor boy who is groomed to be the best Keeper in the world. The writing is so well done that even if you don't know soccer, you can picture the action and cheer for the saves! Imbedded in the story is a political cry to save the Rainforest. That message is effectively delivered but never gets in the way of an exciting story.

Loved this book! Would be great for middle school kids. It has a great story with a sweet twist at the end.

I am a fan of fantasy, not sports stories. And yet, from the opening lines, I was hooked. At its heart, it's the story of finding yourself and of honoring those who come before. Passing this along to my daughter to read!

so I had to read this book for school and when I first saw it I was like oh no it's gonna be those stupid school books that you don't get anything from its. I was completely wrong. The first page got me going and I would finish meals early just so I could go read it. It got you on the edge of your seat like what's gonna happen next? It was s intense but interesting. I got totally recommend this book!

There are lots of books on science writing available and they take you painstakingly through every nuance of structure and detail required to produce a scientific manuscript. This book is different. It focuses on how to write a compelling story. I have 70 published papers in international, peer-reviewed journals; and I want to go back to each and every one of them and rewrite them with the messages from this book clear in my head and clear to the reader. This book focuses on you as a writer first and foremost, and a scientist second. It distills what I've been trying to teach my own students, with insight and clarity far more considered and polished than my own, in an engaging and fun read. If you want to write proposals that get funded, and papers that get widely-cited, then read this book and put its lessons to work. I loved the book: it's now the lab-group reading for next semester.

This book was much more useful than I thought it would be. My expectation was that it would contain some helpful pointers, but that it would not revolutionize my writing. Having nearly 30 papers/book chapters, more than 1000 citations, and some funded proposals under my belt already, I thought I had a decent grasp on scientific writing. This book helped me realize that I had a lot to learn - and then taught it to me! The best part about it is that it solidifies nebulous ideas about good and bad writing, and provides concrete ways to organize your writing, from the level of the whole paper down to individual sentences. Now I wish I could go back in time to rewrite all of my previous papers!Also, I was expecting this book to be helpful, but dry read, but was pleasantly surprised by how engaging it was. Who would have thought that a book on science writing would actually be entertaining and funny, while being reassuring at the same time? It really is an entertaining and easy read, though.I have already had all of my graduate students read this book, and have been talking about it incessantly at meetings. My postdoc has been doing the same thing - without any prompting from me. It has had a profound influence on the way the folks in my lab think about science writing, and has altered my perspective on writing forever. Be warned, however, that after you read this book you will want to start relentlessly editing all of the scientific writing you read.

I recently read this book as well as David Lindsay's Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words. Both are good, but of the two, Schimel's book is more complete, more nuanced, and more fun to read. His main focus is that, in order to be read, remembered, and cited, you must present your work as an interesting story. He explains the elements of storytelling as they relate to science writing, and how to employ those elements throughout your paper. Each chapter has examples throughout and exercises at the end.I recommend both Schimel's book and Lindsay's for anyone who has to write about scientific research. If you want to choose only one, Lindsay is quicker, but Schimel is better.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It is easily one of the most useful and valuable books that any scientist or academic could read. Off the top of my head, I can only think of The Craft of Research as comparable.Schimel examines the craft of writing like a molecular biologist, addressing both the component units (sentence, paragraph, section), and like a novelist, discussing the overall arc and purpose of your writing. It is barely 200 pages long, but remarkably comprehensive.It helps that the book draws heavily upon two books that I love: Joseph Williams' book on Style, and the Heath brothers' book Make It Stick. Two outstanding choices.What makes the book so useful is that Schimel doesn't just tell you what to do: he shows you. The worked examples, and the commentary on what makes the example good science writing, is just superb.It also helps that Schimel distinguishes between writing about research that you have already done, and writing about research that you hope to do. So this book is useful for grant writers and report writers.What makes the book so valuable is that Schimel a good deal of time dealing with one of the main challenges for beginning researchers: identifying and articulating exactly what it is you hope to learn from the (proposed) research.Chapter 20: Writing for the Public, where Schimel discusses the "message box", is worth the price of the book alone.Quite simply, this book should be handed out to every student in the natural and social sciences, the day they start school.

I love this book! The author, Joshua Schimel, is quite correct in asserting that science writing must go beyond getting everything technically correct to being a compelling story that grabs the reader's attention as to the significance of what has been found. That will move the writing toward getting published and toward being appreciated for its substance and value, as indicated by being cited. And it will move research proposals toward getting funded. So buy this book for excellent guidance and examples on how to write science in an engaging and effective manner that has impact on a broad audience rather than just narrow cliques. That said, though, writing research proposals that get funded requires more than compelling writing. That is certainly necessary, but not sufficient. More is required, such as a well-thought-out logic model, a detailed and appropriate budget, and a budget narrative that links the written narrative to resources and what can realistically be accomplished.
