This book is great, I gave it five stares because it is such a good book for its essential purpose and I hate ripping a product based on my bias. But there are some caveats.1. The print is very small and hard for me to read in low light. I can read it fine in good lighting, and text that size is not a problem for me on a computer screen. It is clear that this was a decision to make the book portable for travel or living in Russia. I did not take away stars because learning new languages is mostly done by young people with good eyes. But anyone buying this might consider this as a factor. Attached photo show size of book and text compared to an iPhone 6.2. I don't like that the phonetic pronunciation is right below the Cyrillic because it makes it hard not cheat and read the phonetic rather than generate the proper sounds from the Cyrillic. The english word should be under the Cyrillic and the phonetic under the english so it is easier to keep the phonetics out of focus.

This is not so much a dictionary as it is an illustrated vocabulary builder. The book's collection of topically related photographs is associated with the Cyrillic, Cyrillic transliteration, and English equivalent of the names of items. This compact book is divided into several categories (e.g. office, restaurant, people, animals) and the items are things you would most likely encounter (e.g. desk, menu, aunt, dog). The nouns are not declined, so you will need a good book on grammar if you wish to pursue learning the Russian language. Nevertheless, this book is a joy to use in building your vocabulary. It's my favorite book for this purpose, and it's much more entertaining than dry flash cards.

This is a fabulous resource especially when working with young children. The pictures have both the Russian and English with phonetic pronunciation. Lots of specific photos, and chapters like grains, cars, technology, medical, travel, animals, foods, etc...An example is types of shoes...dress men's, dress high heels, sandals, wedge heels, slip ons, pumps, athletic sneakers, dress boots, hiking boots, flip flops,...and more. If approached correctly. this can be a great way to build vocabulary painlessly. What I mean is that rarely (in my opinion) is there any reasonable return on the time spent on trying to memorize lists of words. There are ways to make that work, but the methods look to be as difficult as memorizing lists of words. With this book, one can wander from room to room and identify exact items and thus have an easier time associating the word with the item. I use post-its for items that I have difficulty remembering but I don't need to do that often. This is a great series and is available in other languages as well.

Very useful, attractive, and entertaining book. I really like the way the words are logically grouped by category, and the illustrations are very nice. I just wish it was a slightly larger format, with a correspondingly larger font that would make reading easier.

I purchased this book for my dad (who has studied the Russian language) and he loved it! The visuals, along with the English and Russian words (and phonetical pronunciation) are awesome! This book has a little bit of everything, from foods to family, to medical and biological. Great reference for visual learners.

This is one of the best buys I've ever made.

I owned the prior edition and gave it only four stars because it lacked a chapter on prenatal care. This edition corrects that omission. I have been using this book for the past month to prepare for the April 2015 re-certification, which I first took in 1986. I highly recommend this book for that purpose. Each disease section is organized so you can jump right to the section you want. For me, the symptoms, signs and labs are very familiar, but the treatments have all changed a lot over 30 years, so I jump to that. The book is written mostly by family medicine faculty rather than other specialists, so they know what we see and focus on that, rather than obscure diseases that we will refer out anyway. I owned both the print and kindle editions for the 3rd edition. The formatting of the numerous tables don't format well in the kindle edition, so I strongly recommend the print version.

I just bought this book and I am actually want to apply for residency of family medicine. I can say that this book is simple and organized and really it really refresh my memories especially I passed USMLE step 3 in 2013 and need to refresh my memory and it is written by family physicians and this is very important not by internists or surgeons with my full respect to them

Maybe it was more “current” in 2015, but it’s not up to date for 2018. As a 3rd year resident, I bought this book to supplement board studying, I now regret it. Some quick examples of how out to date this text is are: it doesn’t mention ASCVD risk, it has LDL goals (which was changed 2014), it says there are only 2 IUD available in the US, there are at least 5, but skyla came out in 2013, so if they had been up to date for 2015, they would have said 3. I know this seems petty, but every chapter I’ve looked at seems to be omitting something important or just seems very dated. They will need to do quite a bit of editing to this book to reflect the current practice standards.I am giving this book a low rating because I do not find it very helpful studying for FM boards, and I don’t trust it as a reference material for practicing either.

EXCELLENT UPDATED VERSION.... STARTED WITH LANGE SERIES OVER 40 YEARS AGO FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION... AND STILL FIND IT VERY USEFUL FOR UPDATING DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTS FOR MANY DISORDERS. NOW APPROACHING MY 50TH YEAR IN MEDICINE AND LANGE SERIES STILL THERE GOING STRONG.

Having written a self-published, non-academic book about Occupy Oakland, I've been looking forward to a scholarly study. This pricey treatise by an assistant professor of criminal justice, published by Rutgers University Press, ostensibly fills that void. However, author Mike King, Ph.D., wears two hats: sociologist and activist. "My role as a participant observer and ethnographer," King relates, "grew out of my already existing extensive involvement in Occupy Oakland." He organized, facilitated meetings, made flyers, and served as press liaison. Whenever possible, he uses the pronoun "we" to incorporate himself (and even his children) into the protest group. He acknowledges, "Love and respect is due to everyone involved in Occupy Oakland who made it what it was." Obviously, this is no objective examination by a detached social scientist.King's loving and respectful insider take may nevertheless rankle true believers. As he recounts, militancy "was a founding characteristic" of Occupy Oakland, which "was largely populated by seasoned militant activists who had prior experience in conflict with the OPD [Oakland Police Department]." From the outset, these hardliners renounced negotiation with authorities. "The camp and the broader community that was Occupy Oakland … was far more hostile to existing political structures than disillusioned by them. From the very first day, the stage was set for an inevitable conflict between the movement and the administration of the city."This contradicts the romanticized narrative of innocent protestors being unexpectedly attacked by police. Occupy Oakland orchestrated that showdown, and the City of Oakland—possessed of every tactical advantage but strategically clueless—played right into their hands.Yet within 95 days, the political opportunity initially seized by Occupy Oakland had been squandered. "The two main mechanisms of protest movement social control," King observes, "physical force and negotiation … failed dramatically in Oakland in the fall of 2011," but "were reconstituted relatively quickly," as "the movement was successfully marginalized, demonized, criminalized." The public's perception of police repression shifted "from illegitimate to warranted." Occupy Oakland's downfall, King argues, "ultimately had more to do with effectively painting the movement as violent, apolitical, socially marginal, dangerous, irresponsible, and internally fractured than it did with street policing tactics."Disappointingly, rather than interrogate the antics that made this portrait resonate, King blames politicians and press for focusing on them. Writing about OO's January 27, 2012 Move-In Day, in which occupiers tried to take over the city-owned, unused Kaiser Convention Center, King concludes, "The planning and coordination of the movement's action left much to be desired." WTF? Move-In Day was widely regarded, including by many would-be occupiers, as a self-inflicted clusterf**k that would in time prove fatal. Yet instead of holding Move-In Day's recklessly inept planners accountable, Mike King attacks the messenger, scolding in particular the San Francisco Chronicle for "overtly seeking to marginalize Occupy Oakland" and "discursively undermine militant, risky, or otherwise unsanctioned actions."Likewise, King totally ignores Black Bloc, OO's roving riot tourists, dressed in all black and carrying black flags, with black hoodies pulled over their heads and black bandanas concealing their pasty white faces. In mid-October 2011, OO handed Black Bloc a blank check, resolving: "Occupy Oakland encourages diversity of tactics [code for violence] for actions that occur outside the camp."Accordingly, during OO's otherwise hugely successful Nov. 2, 2011, General Strike & Anti-Capitalist March, which shut down the Port of Oakland, Black Bloc gleefully smashed plate-glass windows, spray-painted STRIKE in 12-foot-high letters on the façade of a Whole Foods Market in Adams Point, barricaded 16th Street at both ends with wooden pallets, trash cans, tables and tires, started a massive trash fire at 16th & Broadway that sent flames 15 feet high, and pelted first responders with a fusillade of bottles, rocks and chunks of broken concrete. This media-magnetic hooliganism stole the show, vaporizing Occupy Oakland's goodwill in the Bay Area and transforming overnight OO's greatest triumph into the beginning of its end. "The Black Bloc anarchists, who have been active on the streets in Oakland and other cities, are the cancer of the Occupy movement," wrote journalist and Occupy supporter Chris Hedges, who was of course roundly vilified by the collective.In February 2012, OO's Black Bloc contingent traveled to Sacramento, where they triggered a melee with police near the state Capitol. Back in Oakland, in what was billed as a May Day General Strike, Black Bloc again skirmished with police and committed de rigueur acts of vandalism. In July 2012, two blocks beyond the Secret Service protective perimeter at a campaign fundraiser hosting President Obama, Black Bloc burned not one but two American flags. Eleven days later, Black Bloc Ninjas smashed the plate-glass window of Obama's reelection campaign office, with people inside. In October 2012, OO's Black Block joined Afghans for Peace in marking the 11th anniversary of the U.S.-led War in Afghanistan, by conducting a 30-minute round of smashy in downtown streets.Sometimes King's insider vantage equips him not with insight but with blinders. His refusal to acknowledge Black Bloc's destructive effect on Occupy Oakland reduces my rating from 5 to 4 stars.

While the book seems to be well written, it's entire premise is that you must begin by downloading sample C# source files. The link provided in the book to does that (Page XXVIII), points to a page that does not provide a download link. Tried contacting the publisher (Pearson - see Copyright) and also contacting the author. Made no progress with either. Can someone help with this?Two days later...the web page for the download has now been updated. Changing my 1 star to 4 (still not a 5 because of what I and others went through - and the publisher's and author's lack of responsiveness).

The writing is good and I've been learning. I'm bummed that examples that use XAML won't work if you're using Visual Studio on Mac. I know it's a Microsoft book teaching a Microsoft language, but just throwing this out to the Mac VS users out there.

Excellent book for those with either a bit of C# knowledge or another language. I was converting from Java and this book gave me all the basics and some more advanced topics.

I liked the balance between giving some info on the considerations behind the language constructs but not going into details to a frightening extent.

I have a little understanding of C# ..I have managed to read the book till 600 page now I become frustrated ..I managed to understand the Binary Tree project reading back and forth for 3 or 4 times ..to understand topics like Generics, Generic Method, collection,Enumerating Collections....the book walks you with only one project "Binary Tree" if u cant understand one point here you will not understand other points I have to search at YouTube that teach me the topics in a simple way and back to Binary Tree now at Task the book teach you drawing an amazing Graph and tech you improving processing time through task. Now if I didn't fully understand the code behind how the Graph drawn how can I fully understand to implement tasks..it may be so cool if you teach us first all topics with code with very simple way and jump to your walkthroughs...Overall the book is Mazing it teach you Concepts Cleary ...it do Deserve *****
