When David Breashears agreed to climb Mount Everest with an IMAX camera in order to film from the summit, he had no idea that his little expedition would become embroiled in a tragedy that would make headlines around the world. While preparing for the final assault on Everest's peak, members of the international expedition participated in the rescue of the climbers trapped by the fatal blizzard of May 1996, which killed eight. The story of survivor Beck Weather adds poignancy to the project, but it is the photos and broader scope that set this work apart from other recent works focusing on the tragedy (e.g., Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, LJ 4/1/97). National Geographic has put together another epic of a book, receiving a rare five stars from this reviewer team. Supported by outstanding color photographs and an array of writings by numerous writers, this is a valued item to keep.Everest is also a good resource for relevant maps, history, and an interesting discussion of the Sherpa people. Without the Sherpa support, Everest would still be a mountain of mystery.Typical of the majority of Everest material, this book focuses on the South Face, virtually ignoring the popular North Face routes and climbers.

This coffee table book is a good compilation of many of the facets of the Everest story. It leaves one wanting more, so you have to get books like The Ghosts of Everest and Detectives on Everest for the Mallory and Irvine aspect. It has interesting 'side-bar' pages which deal with the Sheerpa culture/people and their particular high altitude physiology, etc. It leaves the high altitude physiology and pathology wanting for the person who has some medical experience but is accurate on the basics. One of the most interesting ones asks, "Should Everest Be Guided?" Some details aside, and being at least an Andean climber from back in the 1970's, before there were 'toilet paper trails' to follow, I think that if one is to be guided then the guide company shoould vet the candidate with climbs on other mountains of comparable conditions before they are allowed to get anywhere near Everest or any of the other 8,000 meter peaks! I bought several copies for friend gifts including non-climbers so that they at least have an idea of the incredible history of Everest which this book aptly explains. It is a good introduction for the person following the current climb of Everest by members of the Montana State University, the Mayo Clinic, and other sponsor/participants to study the geology, climate, human physiology and adaptation both of white Amer-European and local sherpa people)etc. See [...] for more on this on-going, right now - spring 2012 - expedition. It also details some of the 1996 Everest tradegy allowing one to wonder why in the hell did those people go up there under those conditions under the political-social-economic conditions that they did? Which again prompts one to buy more books on Everest's incredible volume of tales!

I first read about the 1996 Everest tragedy in Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" and have read other climber's takes on the events leading up the tragedy. This book is about the IMAX team, their preparations and motivations for climbing and filming Mt. Everest that year. There are stunning photos of the mountain, but the main draw for me was the behind-the-scenes stories involving climbers on the IMAX team. I have much admiration for their selfless actions during the 1996 Everest tragedy. You won't be able to put the book down!

For someone who's lucky they can climb a step ladder, I've somehow managed to become mesmerized by the entire mountaineering experience -- a community I never even knew existed until I re-read "Into Thin Air" and then promptly dove into another three dozen or so books on the topic. This is such a spectacularly gorgeous part of the world, and there are so many books, films, YouTube videos, etc., out there, even armchair adventurers can enjoy it -- not the same as actually being there, but it's something. And not as cold.

This is a large book with spectacular photography and gripping accounts of man against mountain. I reviewed the book through my library and found it so appealing I bought a copy through Amazon. For those of us with no desire to attempt scaling the world's highest peaks there is plenty of basic information regarding the art of climbing but for me at least it was all about the stories of those that do attempt these monsters. A book you can go back over many times.

I wish there were more photos, especially of the most notable landmarks via the South Col route. Considering how difficult it would be to haul a 48lbs IMAX camera up there, and set up the best shots, it is certainly understandable why more photos were not taken for inclusion in this book. However, I do not feel this book deserves 5 stars, without the addition of many more high resolution, color photos.

Much better than the Imax movie itself, compelling images interspersed with informative commentary and history from a number of writers.Compared to Everest: Summit of Achievement this is a lightweight introduction. Yes, you will want to own this and read it more than once. Yes, it's better than the Imax Everest movie (not saying much). Unfortunately this book shares some of the superficial qualities the Imax movie had. The editors would have done well to drive their razor-sharp crampons a bit more forcefully into their subject matter, if you catch my drift...

Jon Atack spent nine years trying to tamp down his cognitive dissonance as a Scientologist, even when he was most firmly enmeshed in the cult's airless, blinkered world. His declaration as a Suppressive Person means that he wasn't likely to get cooperation from the "Church," and his experience as a member gives him more than enough authority on anything a pro-Scientology spokesman would be likely to say. He also provides a penetrating analysis of the ugly, heartless core of Scientology, a "religion" that devalues compassion.Atack's exposé was published in a different, more dangerous time, and he was persecuted for it. In Jon Atack’s “A Piece of Blue Sky”, Atack addresses the issues within Scientology such as the pseudoscience of Dianetics, the corruption of the Church of Scientology, and the cynical L. Ron Hubbard. The author, a member of the church turned skeptic, holds an objective view on these matters and provides details from many sources, making him a reliable resource of information on an otherwise mysterious subject. The book starts off with a credulous tone as the author relays his experience with the church when he was a young adult but slowly transitions into a skeptical tone as the cracks begin to show in the reasoning of Dianetics and Scientology. This book reveals the ugly truth about what seemed like ideas that were meant help people but were actually just scams supported by pseudoscience that L. Ron Hubbard created. Believers and skeptics alike should read this book as it provides a lot of insight into one of the most successful scams of all time. Atack does an impressive job of conveying his experiences with the church in a logical, chronological manner without compromising the objectivity of his writing. In the beginning, the author finds himself feeling dejected and is able relieve his pain through the comforting atmosphere of Scientology. Scientology, or more so Dianetics, offered him a cure to all of his pain so naturally he accepted these ideas with open arms. Throughout the book, Atack begins catching some startling subtleties that begin to alert him to some disconcerting aspects of the ideas of the man he practically worshiped, L. Ron Hubbard. As he progresses further and further through the church’s levels of initiation, he notices more flaws such as his experiences of mental abuse, the outrageous price fluctuations of different Scientology amenities and Dianetic auditing, and the scientific shortcomings in the background and evolution of Dianetics. Atack even explains the numerous fabrications Hubbard provides in his background from the specifics of his service in World War II to the data he provided in his “scientific research” on Dianetics. Atack effectively exposes the errors in Hubbard’s background and his concepts of Dianetics and Scientology; Atack uses personal experiences to prove his points and remains unbiased so as not make it seem like he is attacking the views of Scientologists. Atack successfully connects his personal experiences to the facts pertaining to Hubbard and Scientology. This connection makes the book easy to read and the points supporting the main idea easy to put together. Atack goes into great detail about each subject-Scientology, Hubbard, and Dianetics-which allows the reader to make a confident, informed decision about each. Atack could definitely be considered an authority figure on the matter but he chooses to keep his opinions out of it, letting the reader feel like they are in control. At a glance, this book may not seem like it is debunking pseudoscience but more like the author is uncovering a scam. The author is mainly uncovering a scam but this scam would be nothing without the support of Hubbard’s made up pseudoscientific jargon that made these ideas so convincing. Atack gradually dissects the components of Dianetics and Scientology, revealing absolute nonsense when Hubbard’s actual scientific terms are put into context. What an amazing resource this is.I've been in or around the skilled trades my entire life (I don't mean just my adult life; my dad gave me tools for every birthday and Christmas starting with my first one). And for several years, I was a licensed Master Electrician. There aren't many "handy man" jobs that I can't do. I expected to learn a few things from this book, but even with that background I came across one gem after another that I hadn't known.As a further note on my background, I've been writing and editing for the nation's leading electrical trade magazine since 1996. So when I come across any book or article related to the skilled trades, I'm as concerned with the quality of the writing as with the accuracy of the information. Additionally, for nearly as many years I've been working with the nation's leading developer of electrical exam preparation products and other electrical training materials; so I have a keen appreciation of the need for setting the tone. I've also written several guides and standards for the National Electrical Contractors Association, which serves the nation's electrical unions; there, a huge concern is addressing all areas of knowledge that an electrician will need on the job. This "completeness" is another aspect beyond the ones I've mentioned.In this books, all of these (and others) have been done with a great deal of care to get it right. It is an understatement to say I am impressed.Even the arrangement of the book reflects correctly "setting the tone." When I've tried to teach someone how to do a skilled trade task, I've often found the person didn't really understand the tools for doing the job. When I learned various skilled trades, my mentors made sure I understood how to correctly use the right tool for a particular job. That's one reason why, for example, I don't use screwdrivers as prybars and why I avoid using adjustable wrenches (rather than exact wrench).This book starts off with four "general" chapters: Your Home, Hand Tools, Power Tools, and Fasteners & Adhesives. While I found myself mostly nodding in approval while reading these, I also found myself thinking, "Wow, I didn't know that. How helpful!". The book doesn't have formal Part 1, Part 2, etc. But you can consider these four chapters to constitute Part 1.In keeping with this theme, Part 2 consists of chapters devoted to particular trades or groups of trades. It's important to note that this book does not pretend to qualify you as, for example, a Master Electrician. For each trade, it explains the "how to" that a reasonably competent do-it-yourselfer can be reasonably expected to do. There are some things you don't do without extensive qualifications. For example, you might run a new branch circuit in your home but you need to leave an electrical service panel change-out to a licensed electrician.Here are those chapters and the trades they represent. The skill level is, in my opinion, toward the high end of apprentice.*Plumbing. Obviously, plumber.*Electricity. Obviously, electrician.*Home climate. Insulator, HVAC tech, and system installer. This chapter shows you how to do relatively simple things like replace a water heater, insulate an attic, install a dehumidifier, and so forth. It also gives you a strong foundation in all concepts related to home climate equipment and systems. So while you aren't personally going to install a heat pump system you will understand what that entails and thus be able to select the right system for your home and competently oversee the installation.*Interior repairs & improvements. Building maintenance inspector, drywaller, finish carpenter, flooring installer, window installer, door installer, and others. This chapter alone justifies the cost of the book.*Painting and wallpapering. Painter, wall paper installer. I have seen hugely shoddy work by DIYs who don't have a clue. PLEASE, if you have not been trained in painting by a qualified person don't attempt a paint job. Here's a simple test. Real painters don't usually need masking tape. Do you know the technique for painting the top edge of a wall without getting paint onto the ceiling, using just the brush? If not, hire a painter. Wall paper jobs are notorious for degrading into nasty fights between spouses who didn't know what they were doing when they started. If you're married and want to avoid the cost of a divorce, don't attempt to save money by winging a wallpaper job. Hire it done, or take the time to understand how (this book explains it).If the book were divided into parts, then Part 3 would cover not the tools (Part 1) or the skills/trades (Part 2), but the applications. What "application" means in construction parlance is where the work is done. The chapters:*Exteriors. This covers the gamut, including ladder safety (each year, falls from ladders are at or near the top of OSHA's "accident cause" list). This is thorough, covering every aspect of exterior maintenance and repair. It's also an excellent resource if you're considering an upgrade project of some sort for your home's exterior. Even if you ultimately don't do the project yourself, you will understand what makes a job a quality job and you can manage the project to get the best result for the dollars you spend.*Landscaping. This covers everything from various types of retaining walls to various types of fences, to decks, patios, and water gardens.*Windows & Doors. Most homes don't have good windows or good doors. I have replaced all of the ones in my home. I didn't have an education on these seemingly simple product categories, and it turns out they are far from simple. I wish I'd had this book when doing those projects. That would have saved me a great deal of time and probably some money. Fortunately, it turns out that I made the right choices. I just wasn't efficient in getting there, due to a big knowledge gap I had to fill.Part 4, if this book were arranged in parts, would be about types of materials:*Concrete, Masonry, & Asphalt. Pretty self-explanatory. I've done some concrete work, and have built and poured footings. This books is spot-on, for that topic. My cousin worked as a mason for many years, but we didn't talk shop. So I can't comment on the accuracy of the masonry information but it sure sounds correct to me. Ditto for asphalt (except it was a childhood neighbor, not a cousin).*Woodworking & Furniture Repair. I've done many projects in this area, and this book does show the correct methods. However, for most of this kind of work you need a bit of the artisan to get a good outcome. Or, in many cases, you need special equipment to do the work. For example, I had my dining table professionally refinished. I didn't have the space, for one thing. But if you read this chapter you'll probably guess at my other reasons for having it done. I have refinished many smaller items, however. I've also repaired couches, chairs, and other items. But there is a line I draw based on knowing what it takes to do the job right.*Metals & Plastics. This is another area in which I have been extensively trained and have seen the most awful work done by the untrained DIY. Don't try to save money by "winging it." If you have a desire to this kind of work, you need the kind of "how to" that this chapter covers. And you'll need special tools.The last two chapters are:*Healthy Home & Emergency Repair. I've put significant resources into making my home a healthy home. When this topic comes up in conversation, people are often surprised at what this means. And they find out they live in a toxic home. But they don't have to. Read this chapter!*Storage Projects. The first rule of storage is to get rid of things. There's a limit to that, especially if your home is a sort of base for projects, sports, hobbies, or even "make your living" work. I thought I had the storage thing nailed, but discovered some great tips in this chapter.This book gets my highest recommendation. If you're a home owner, it's a "must read." If you're an apartment-dweller, in some ways it will be even more so (for reasons including those last two chapters, much of which you can apply even in an apartment setting).

Complete? Not so much. I received it yesterday and had a pretty good look at it, spending around 2 hours going through it. I have had the 1991 version since 2000 or so, which was published by Reader's Digest. As I understand it, Family Handyman (publisher of the "current" edition) is a spinoff of Reader's Digest). Today I took a look at my old 1991 version (which I think was great) and came upon a treatment of one of the many projects I have on my list, which is replacing a tread on my back staircase. The book goes into lots of detail with great illustrations and explanations. Last night, I looked at the staircase material in the newer 2014 edition and there was almost nothing on staircase treads -- what was there all talked about stopping squeaks. My old 1991 edition has "Treads" in the index with 3 page numbers. There's nothing for "Treads" in the new edition's index.Moreover, I prefer the illustration style in the old edition to that of the new edition. There is a much greater preponderance of photographs in the new edition and I much prefer the work or artists in these sorts books to those of photographers. The new edition has seemingly hundreds of shots of real people doing projects. I feel that this distracts from the task at hand, which is to focus on the projects themselves. In this regard, the old edition is far superior.Of course, the new edition has some treatments that the old one doesn't. There are some areas of concern that are treated in the new edition which were not in the 1991 edition. Also, of course, some materials are new and available tools have changed some. Clearly, however, I'm going to go to the old book in many instances when I need help with a project. Newer is not always better.

I am very pleased with this book as it covers a wide amount of DIY subjects and gives clear instruction with pointers along the way. I like the Home Depot guide that had multiple home topics too but found it lacking in many areas where as this one has blown it out of the water in every way for the projects I've done so far. All of the information it has can be gotten off the Family Handyman website and/or application but for anyone that does a lot of DIY stuff on their home knows that trying to use a computer/smartphone whole working on something they are not familiar with is the worst and if horribly inefficient. Not to mention that if you have a "mishap" and a mess happens then worst case scenario you would only be out less than 25.00 to replace this book instead or the hundreds on your electronics. I don't usually give reviews or even long ones when I do but this reference text is something I stand behind for anyone who is a home owner so I thought I'd throw my opinion out there for anyone that's interested.

It's not college, but I find it's a good starting point. Since I bought my house, I haven't encountered an issue it has no information on. I think a product like this is what you use to find out what questions to ask when approaching a problem you may not be have faced before. I will say you should still follow up for more thorough information. For example, I would not have been ready to tile my bathroom from this book alone, but without it, I may have unknowingly purchased the wrong thinset for the job. This book sent me to home Depot armed with the correct questions to get what I needed. For new home owners in particular, I very much recommend this book.

I was unable to progress far into Ferro's work due to the poor prose, i understand that this is a translation of the original French so i do not know if it is the way the work has been translated or Ferro's writing style, that made it hard to follow the arguments being made. In addition, while the book contains an extensive biboligraphy there are no footnotes that corospond to them making follow-up work (to check the original source etc) impossible. From what i did read, some of the arguments it did make are dated or covered better by more modern works such as 'After Tamerlane' by Darwin.

This is a dense, very special book containing lots of thrilling ideas. Howevery, it presupposes a lot of knowledge on the different historical backgrounds, e.g. History of Islam/ Discoveries/ Theoretical Debates on post-colonial studies. It is though and thus an inspiring book for scholars. Yet, if you are not a scholar, there are better books to read for introductory purposes!
