I bought this book as an introduction to natural dyeing based on several recommendations. I have been mostly pleased with the information in the book. It's not perfect, and I think the title is slightly misleading, but it's a solid introduction.The good:It has a good list of natural dye sources along with color swatches that show the colors achieves using the plant alone, plant plus mordant, plant alone plus modifier, and mordant, plant, and modifier. Very very usefulIt has a very clear introduction to dying that covers techniques and steps in the dyeing process (it even has a small section on using urine to dye with indigo and woad). Pretty thorough for for a relatively small book.The illustrations are well done and in full color.The bad:Organization - the key for the plant sections is located on page 20, which is 2 sections away from the plant section. It's located in a small sidebar that is easily overlooked. Why couldn't the sidebar be located in the chapter it's actually related to?I was expecting more of an emphasis on plants native to North America. From the title I expected it to be a book of dyes that *I* could collect from the wild. WHile there are several that grow wild either as native plants or as imports, that is not at all the focus. THe focus is on natural dyes, and the plants listed are largely cultivated species grown in various locations in the world, not wild plants you can find in your backyard.The conclusion:This is a good book, you will not go wrong in buying it as an introduction to natural dyeing. The organizational quibble can be overcome (remember, key to the plant section is on page 20). Once you've read through this book and practiced you should be well equipped to begin experimenting with plants that do grow wild in your own yard!

Wife loves it. She started to dye everything in the house. It's out of control. We have pinkish table cloths, I lost a couple of t-shirts to experiments and I'm starting to get scarves as presents - all of them in different colours.

I love how it shows the range of color you can get from the modifiers/mordants, beyond just the dye itself. It really has me excited to try dyeing some of my handspun yarn. The key to the colors was tricky to find, thanks to previous reviews for letting me know where to find it! That definitely should have been included in the actual dye section, but that's a minor complaint.

There is no question that this one is useful. It gives the specifics of what to use and how. The day this book arrived was a garbage day and I had just dug up my dahlia tubers and put the stems in the recycle and out to the curb. Then I sat down browse through the book. At 10 O'Clock that night I was out at the curb in my bathrobe digging through the recycle bin to reclaim my dahlia stems. The dye from those came out just great. I tried them several ways on different wools and then spun yarn. I have also used other materials from the garden that were covered in this book, all with good results. If you want to try your hand at dyeing with natural products, this is the book you want.Bill IsaksonRichmond, CA

Excellent, well researched information. Dean's book is clearly one written from the perspective of a natural dyer and textile artist who has tested each recipe. A Master Dyer sharing her love of natural colour. Great for Northern Hemisphere textile artists.

Fabulous book. If you are interested in botanical dying fabric, this is a great book to have. I love the plant charts that show all the colors that can be achieved from one dye pot. I would highly recommend this to a friend interested in fabric dying.

Not quite a beginner's dye book, but certainly easy to understand. It is a go-to book in my natural dye workshops because the author is so lucid and enthusiastic.

This is a great reference book, it is very easy to follow. It gives examples of plants and which parts to use, also changing certain dynamics of the mixtures to help create a color pallet from one plant.

I'm pretty sure I've been reading Ripley's books out of order, series-wise at least. In the Moving In series, we are introduced to Brian in Jenny (who also appear in the Berkley street series).This is a great start to this set of books. There are tons of ghosts and we learn how Brian and Jenny become participants in the ghost world. Since I've been reading out of order, it was cool to find out the back stories on characters I didn't realize had roots in other series. Seeing their progress as they learn to navigate this world was quite interesting. This book has several mean ghosts and we are introduced to a bunch of characters we see more of in later books as well as other series.As with the Berkley series books, once I got started I couldn't stop reading. I've had several late nights of reading as I've fallen in love with this author's storytelling. I will say there are more errors and things that weren't present in later series, but in my opinion, that just means he is growing as an author or he's gotten a better editor since then.Overall, I highly recommend the Moving In series because one of the things I've loved is Ripley's books don't follow a set pattern. Something I've noticed in a lot of series is the author follows what seems like a mad-libs version of an outline. This makes their books predictable. I don't think this author does that and it makes for a series of books that I don't get bored with.

I'm not going to review each and every book because the review would be too long!! All I'm going to say is this series is amazing.Each and every book is well written and developed. Each of them were a 5 star from me and I can't praise them or recommend them enough. Go buy this, you won't be sorry!!I'm a big fan of this author and love when his books are bundled together!! I've reviewed each one separately but I'll give you little snippets of my reviews for each book..Book 1... The plot was really fast paced and addicting. You are brought into the action right from the start and it doesn't stop till the very end. The ghosts were all so creepy but none more so than Sam. He totally freaked me out!!!In all, a well written story that gave me chills. This is an author that I need to check out and see more of their books!! Definitely recommend, though maybe not at night!!!Book 2... The plot of this was again, fast paced and intense. It takes place in both this time and another, and I really enjoyed seeing Williams story and the twist the author threw in. The ghosts seem to be getting scarier and more evil and this one frightened me a lot!!Anyway, in all, this was another quick creepy read. I so want to see these as a series!!! While reading I kept thinking to myself, what would Sam and Dean do!!! Lol. Being a big Supernatural nut, this series is right up my alley.Book 3... One thing I've found with this series is that the settings seem to be getting creepier and creepier. I have always thought that, for a ghost story anyway, an abandoned mansion, or hospital or Sanitarium are always a good place to set it. They just give of an incredibly scary vibe! Middlebury Sanitarium was such a scary place, and the authors descriptive writing just gave me chills thinking of it. You could just imagine the pain and suffering that took place there!! Definitely not a book to read in the dark ;) Saying that, I may love scary stories but I'm a wimp and only read them during the day!!!Again, the author creates unique and interesting characters. I loved the introduction of Ken!! His back story was awesome and his character really shined. Then we have the dead! All of them were as freaky as hell and scary as ever!! The King!!!! I got goose bumps while reading about him. But as I've come to expect with this author. Some of the awesome characters die. Damn you Ron Ripley!!!! ;) Though with so many ghosts wafting around the place, maybe they might make a return!!! Lol.Anyway, this book, and indeed the series, was amazing. They may be relatively short books, but there is so much happening that they don't feel short. They are chock full of suspense, thrills, chills and will grab you from the first page. I so want these to be a mini series on TV!Book 4... This series has quickly became a kind of bite sized pleasure of mine! The author knows how to capture your attention and he knows how to make your hackles rise and goose bumps appear! I love reading these, but not at night time ;)In all, another awesome addition to the series. I so can not wait for the next one to come to audio, and that is thanks to the amazing narrator!!Can you see a trend?? Book 5 and 6 are just as good and this series will firmly stay on my favourites list.Thom Bowers does a great job as per usual. He has plenty of tones and voices and always brings the creepy atmosphere to life.I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Because of grammatical and spelling errors I just couldn't give this book 5 stars. The aforementioned issues, and some choppy sentence structure, distracted from story continuity. Editing needed. The beginning of the series was a bit rough, but improved as the story progressed and the characters became fuller. The last two books were what pulled me in. I could feel the unearthly cold, smell the putrid rot, and, best of all, experience the terror from imminent danger. All in all a good read.

This is the first time I've read this author's books. I highly enjoyed them. They're all about a man and his wife who fall into ghost hunting by purchasing a haunted house. Each book in the series is about a different haunting. They were scary, fast paced and continually held my interest. I was sorry to finish them. I look forward to reading more of this author

A chilling series of books. The ghosts are vile, wicked beings and the ghost hunters are brave, if not foolhardy people. The six books and the bonus material follow an intrepid ghost hunter's career, each book continuing the tale. The horror is total. I got chills that built from one book to the next. If you enjoy horror stories, be sure to read this series.

Not scary at all. The writing goes along with a reading level of middle school aged children. The ghosts aren’t scary. The characters interact with the “paranormal” as if they’re living, breathing humans. The writing is tacky. Not once did I feel even somewhat spooked. I wouldn’t recommend this series for those who are looking for something that is actually scary. I couldn’t even make myself finish it because I was so disappointed. I returned for a refund.

The eminent evangelical historian Noll and journalist Nystrom offer a lucid and charitable account of the current state of evangelical-Catholic relations. Only scant decades ago, they point out, Protestants inveighed against "the formalism, the anthropocentric worship, the power mongering, and the egotism" of Rome. But now, they wryly observe, all those qualities "flourish on every hand within Protestant evangelicalism." This willingness to see the proverbial beam in one's own eye is one of the great strengths of this book, which has as much to say about the authors' own Christian tradition as about Rome. Surveying the changes in Catholicism since Vatican II, and documenting the numerous encounters that have ensued between Catholics and Protestants, Noll and Nystrom find "a dramatically altered terrain" that offers hope for further rapprochement. Catholics will appreciate the authors' focus on official teaching, especially their appreciative, though not uncritical, survey of the Church's Catechism. Not all readers will agree that on the crucial Reformation-era topic of justification, "Catholics and evangelicals now believe approximately the same thing," and Noll and Nystrom barely mention popular practices, like the cult of Guadalupe and the late Pope John Paul II's reinstatement of indulgences, that trouble evangelicals. I have read a lot of Catholics (or Evangelicals that have converted to Catholicism) lately. So Mark Noll and Carolyn Nystrom's book is a different take at Catholicism.There are some great parts of this book and some weaker parts of this book. The weakest part is the back and forth discussion of the many discussions between Protestant denominations and Catholics. This was interesting, but repetitive; it seemed to just keep going on and on. Many of the issues between Protestants and Catholics keep coming up again and again. However, I do not know a better way to present the data, and it needed to be presented.The discussion of the Evangelicals and Catholics Together statements were more interesting. For one, there were a number of interviews with the participants. These were mostly high profile and interesting people. I was disappointed that Noll did not speak specifically of his involvement narratively. (He was one of the original signers.)Noll brings the background of a historian. Early chapters are about historical background of the Catholic/Evangelical divide. And his historical background strongly influences the final assessment. Over and over again it is clear that while theological issues were and still are a significant issue between Protestants and Catholics, it is practical issues of church and practice that that will be most difficult to overcome. These two quotes are really the summary of the whole book."For Catholics, the church constitutes believers; for evangelicals, believers constitute the church. For Catholics, individual believers are a function of the church; for evangelicals, the church is a function of individual believers."and"Theologically considered, the recent engagement of evangelicals and Catholics testifies to a significant confluence of opposites. Catholics, whose ecclesiology is so high that the church as an institution is integral to its understanding of the gospel, and evangelicals, whose ecclesiology is so low that the church is often forgotten in their proclamation of the gospel, have been backing toward each other in a world where the gospel itself has become a costly commodity. In this awkward dance, many Catholics and evangelicals have bumped into each other, back to back. What should they do when they turn and try to ponder what to make of these others who seem so obviously to be honoring the gospel but in such strange terms, with such strange practices, and in such strange conjunction with other Christian realities?"It is a rare book that I say that the appendix is one of the best parts of the book. Noll and Nystrom tell us what we should be reading to move forward.Noll is one of those Evangelicals that is behind closer relationships between Catholics and Evangelicals and this book strongly shows that. If you are interested in the issues between Catholics and Evangelicals, without glossing over real theological and practical issues, this is a book you should pick up.

This book was recommended to me by a friend with a great heart for ecumenism, and I thank him for the recommendation. The book is well researched and documented, showing the development of relations between Protestant/Evangelical and Catholic leaders - from mutual hostility to mutual good-will. It offers a unique, outside perspective on the modern Catholic Church. As a Catholic, I'm amazed at how respectful and dedicated Noll and Nystrom are to understanding Catholicism, but how they still get some basic ideas wrong.After introducing the book's road map in the first chapter, the authors start off with a balanced view of mutual Catholic and Protestant antagonism from Reformation-era Europe (and provides an excellent list of misconceptions from both sides on p. 42). But soon they narrow their view to North American anti-Catholic writings and actions, mostly in the 19th and early 20th century. They quote personal letters and magazine articles that show "the widespread evangelical concern about the Catholic civil threat as much as long-standing concerns about doctrinal errors." (p. 56-67) Chapters 2 and 3 left me with a number of concerns and questions, such as 'Is the entire book filled with anti-Catholic angst?', 'Are the authors endorsing these views?', 'Why is this book so one-sided?', and 'Who exactly do they mean by Evangelicals?' But my apprehension was quelled by the time I got to chapter 4, which is the best history of official Protestant and Catholic dialogues I have ever read. Since Noll was one of the original signers of the Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT) documents, he gives an insightful account of that initiative as well. The book even recounts how those anti-Catholic sentiments mentioned so pointedly in Chapter 2 have been directed towards Evangelical leaders who signed ECT documents or otherwise friendly towards Catholicism.Still there are a number of points of Catholic doctrine that Noll and Nystrom get wrong, such as- "Catholics currently may read the Living Bible and the Good News Bible, both produced under Protestant auspices" (p. 25) implying Catholics may not read other versions. The truth is that Catholics can read any version of the Bible, and those two are not the most popular among Catholics.- The second Vatican Council had a "change of mind in matters ... as fundamental as revelation, the relation of the natural to the supernatural, salvation and doctrines of the Church and papal authority" (p. 60). Catholics claim that the council changed the Church's pastoral approach on a number of issues, but did not change any doctrines and did not formulate any new ones.- Because of ecumenical dialogues, "Catholics came to respect individual salvation and the priesthood of all believers" (p. 85) - implying that there was little Catholic teaching about these topics before the dialogues. The truth is that the Catholic Church has always believed in and taught both, even though she lives them out differently than other Christian groups.- "Humanae Vitae ... continued the Catholic prohibition against all forms of birth control except the rhythm method." (p. 223) In actuality, Humanae Vitae merely speaks of engaging "in marital intercourse only during those times that are infertile" for "well-grounded reasons for spacing births" (HV 16). Also a number of forms of NFP had been developed at the time HV was published, which Pope Pius XII had encouraged in 1951, seventeen years earlier.It is evident to me that the authors are trying to accurately describe Catholicism; they just get parts of it wrong. I think that shows that Catholic teaching is a difficult thing to grasp, even for open-minded, well educated Protestants and Evangelicals.An unexpected contribution is the authors' chapter dedicated to the 1985 Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). They describe "paragraph after paragraph leading to worship and prayer" (p.119). If nothing else, hearing a self-identified Evangelical Protestant's view of the CCC is worth reading by any one interested in Evangelical-Catholic dialogue. After reviewing many points of disagreement between Catholics and Evangelicals, the authors conclude that the Catholic notion that "Christ and his church are one" is the fundamental difference between the Catholic and Evangelical worldviews (pp. 146-147). I'm not certain if I agree with this analysis, but I do find it both fascinating and well thought-out. The book ends with a great outside (Evangelical) view of current trends in American Catholicism.In short this book offers an insightful view of how open-minded Evangelicals view Catholicism, but it is a very poor source for learning what the Catholic Church actually teaches.

OFF-LIMITS is a perfectly wonderful, and wonderfully perfect romance! I had never read a medical romance before – I didn’t quite know what to expect, and I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it – but Amy Andrews is a favourite author of mine, so I took a chance, and I’m so happy I did! I must say that Hamish is a totally dreamy hero, and I fell in love with him much quicker than Lola did; he is honestly everything I look for a male protagonist in a romance novel: he’s straightforward, he is naturally sexy; he doesn’t come across as arrogant, but full of honest self-confidence; he’s a caring individual and he understands Lola’s concern given that he is a paramedic, and she an ICU nurse. Amy Andrews’ own background as a nurse gives much credibility and authenticity to the story, and the hospital drama is exciting, enlightening as it deals at some point with organ transplant. I also loved how the medical and romance parts flowed so seamlessly to form a smooth and very compelling narrative.Hamish is a country boy at heart; he thrives on stability, Lola a nomad, and while their attraction and fondness for each other, I had no idea how they would ever work together to find their happily ever after. Hamish is open to compromise, but Lola not so much, and how they finally found a way was just fabulous. I loved that neither Hamish nor Lola assumed that their relationship was off-limits: Grace warns Lola quite specifically that it is not a good idea. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the Australian setting, and I had to google those jacaranda flowers to see for myself what they looked like – they play a very important part in the story. The writing is, naturally, flawless, the banter between Hamish and Lola so normal and delightful; I loved this romance so much because it felt normal, it was entirely believable from beginning to end; it felt like it could happen to me, like this is what true love really should be. I have nothing but very good things to say about TEMPTED BY MR. OFF-LIMITS: it is a quick read, perfectly paced, and utterly lovely and delightful!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am not one that reads a lot of medical romance. I am glad I took a chance and read Lola and Hamish’s story.Lola had a gypsy heart and decided she would never marry or settle down anywhere permanently just like her Great Aunt May. She grew up in the country and planned to never return to that way of life. She enjoys her job as an ICU nurse and feels fulfilled in her career. She doesn’t want to be tied down by love.Hamish was a country boy at heart and wanted to work as an acute care paramedic in the rural areas. He loved a challenge and was in town for extra training before taking on a rural post. He also just happens to be Lola’s best friend’s brother.I loved how the two developed a relationship and fulfilled the needs in each other’s life. Hamish had a kindness about him that Lola needed. She also provided comfort in his life when he needed it. I like stories that show the human emotion and this is one of them.I received a copy from the author to read and review. All feelings and words are my own opinion.

Amy Andrews is truly a gifted storyteller. She is quickly becoming a must read author for me. What I like is that her stories and her characters are relatable. Nothing is contrived or overworked. The day to day lives of her characters are grounded in a reality that is genuine, heartbreaking, and inspiring. It's clear the author has a connection to the medical profession and that allows her to bring the reader further into the story. Andrews is one of those authors that writes romance and tells a story at the same time.Hamish...wow!! He's really is everything a book boyfriend is supposed to be. He's the perfect daydream. Lola, I have to say, is a frustrating young woman and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her take the fall into love. The shared understanding of their jobs, the ups and downs, makes their romance so much more solid and sweet and enviable. There is nothing not to love about this book.

MS Andrews always writes a book that is sure to leave me a very happy reader and this one is no exception, I have just had a lovely steamy, sizzling and moving journey to a gorgeous HEA with two very opposite people (or maybe they are not) one city one country, but both so very much attracted to each other that staying just friends is not going to happen.Lola Fraser is an ICU nurse in a big city hospital she works hard and loves her job and is fun-loving single gypsy, she longs to travel like her great aunt. She grew up in the sticks and getting out of Doongabi was the best thing she had done, but when she offers to share her apartment with her best friend’s brother Hamish Gibson the world as Lola knows it is turning, sex for fun and de-stressing is changing the way she feels.Hamish is a real country boy and when he comes to the city to take a course to further him in his paramedic career staying with Lola for a few months should be easy and fun even if they had shared a very steamy night together a few months before that was only to help her sleep that night. But when there is a tragedy in the city and both Hamish and Lola are emotionally affected this brings them back together and Hamish is losing his heart to the girl who is always going to be single.This really is a beautiful story with heart wrenching cases on the road for Hamish and in the ICU for Lola and together they lean on each other but Lola is still determined to be single and travel the world and she is stunned that Hamish falls in love with her, this doesn’t sit well with her and then when a closer loss for Lola makes her see that there is room in her caravan for two the world is a happier place for her and Hamish. I loved this one from start to finish, fabulous moving story with sizzle to boot and yes it left me smiling, lovely location and Christmas and New Year, this is one that I highly recommend.
