New concept or not, Delsohn does a deft job of highlighting the complexities of the cases that he encounters. As Delsohn sees it, "For all the talk prosecutors like to engage in about how their number-one priority is to seek justice, not just win trials, it's numbers-trials completed, trials won, and trials lost-that mean everything." Despite this somewhat jaded view, the half-dozen cases that Delsohn tracks during the year belie this sentiment. While the verdicts are sometimes imperfect, the overall lesson of the book is that justice is, in the end, usually done. The murder cases include a bakery robbery gone sour, a doctor who throws his young daughter to her death, a drugged wacko who videotapes himself hanging his girlfriend and a Ukrainian immigrant who murders his family. Like episodes from Law and Order, each of these cases illustrates how the tactical decisions of a murder trial play out against the backdrop of very real defendants and victims. While this volume would have been served better by less lawyer banter and a tighter focus, the perennial struggle between the DAs and defense attorneys will appeal to those junkies who can't get enough of bloody crimes and courtroom drama. I'm only halfway in to this new book, surprised no other reviews out there yet since I know a lot of folks in Sacramento area have been reading it. Sacramento District Attorney gave author Gary Delsohn incredible access for his year long project. Working with the lawyers and detectives is shown to be just about like any other workplace - there are arrogant, passionate and sometimes dimwitted people working in every type of job in our lives. Just because someone is a doctor or lawyer isn't reason to assume they can tell the difference between night and day, or at least agree on it! A great read - my wife wants me to hurry up and finish so she can read it.

Just as described

Gary Delsohn proves himself as an outstanding journalist in the classic sense with this book. He captures the essense of the cases but more importantly, the thoughts and feelings of the women and men who tirelessly work to uphold justice in our communities. This is an excellent book that puts a very human face on the large and seemingly inhumane criminal justice system.

This is a "true crimes" book, not any sort of analysis or even reporting on a prosecutor's office. It deals with several very big homicide cases which were dealt with in 2001 by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. Mr. Delsohn spent a year in that office, but it appears that he spent it almost exclusively with Chief Deputy John O'Mara and a select number of homicide prosecutors. He deals only with a few cases, some of which were highly notorious. These cases are presently journalistically, and are readable, but entirely from the perspective of the prosecution. The book reflects the traditional ethos of line prosecutors. It talks little about achieving justice in general. The cases considered are so outrageous that maximum punishments (generally life-without-parole) are about the only reasonable sentences. But a dozen cases do not make up very much of the workload of a prosecutor's office. Sacramento files 40-50,000 cases per year: petty thefts; drunk drivings; drug offenses; domestic violence; bar fights; etc. Justice in these cases are often far less clear. These cases and considerations are not anywhere in the book. Nor do the dozen or so prosecutors in the book represent all prosecutors. The book is a decent read, assuming one wants a true crimes book. It is also a good read for those who are in the area and have some knowledge of the crimes, the locales, and the players. But the book is not more than that and gives little insight into the over-all functioning of a prosecutor's office or into prosecution in general.

An absolutely outstanding writer! This is a book you can't put down, but don't want to finish reading because you don't want the pleasure to end. The writer captures your interest from the very beginning and weaves his story through multiple cases, which are all in the legal process at the same time, but he does not lose the reader. His descriptions of tragic cases never reek of sensationalism, nor are they gory, yet the writer's style gets the message of mayhem across and exudes concern for victims' families without being schmaltzy. This is an incredible insider's view of all the players in local Sacramento law. What an eye opener. A peepers delight. What an incredible year of investigation this man lived! What a flawless re-creation of those experiences! From time to time the reader has to remind themself that this is not fiction, this is reality, this occurred. What he writes is historical. Facts.While this is his first effort, this book leaves the reader yearning for his next novel. Please don't make us wait too long.

I grabbed this audio book for a recent trip and soon tossed it aside because the author read his own book. He rushes through the text and does not enunciate clearly. I doubt that I'll ever try the print version because what I did hear was more about the criminal & the crime than the workings of the DA's office. It's possible that this changes later in the book but I didn't get far enough to tell. The author should seriously consider hiring a professional reader like Scott Brick if he decides to offer any more audio books.

The only reason I was able to suffer my way through this book is because it was our book club's monthly selection. It appears to be written by a seventh grader who is smitten with the D.A.'s office, not an award-winning (adult) journalist. I can't believe his editors let this through -- we're they sleeping??

This is an extraordinary work of investigative journalism by a skilled and intrepid journalist, who, at great personal risk to herself, has meticulously pieced together how the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), led by Paul Kagame, the now much-lauded president of Rwanda, perpetrated a genocide of its own. The RPF's massacres of Hutu civilians started even before the Hutu nationalist elements within and outside the Rwandan government began the mass slaughter of Tutsi in 1994, ultimately killing as many as 1 million of them.The conventional story is that the Rwandan genocide was a one-way affair: the Hutu nationalists killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Tuts (as well as many moderate Hutu). That did happen, and Rever makes it clear that it did; in any event, that is by now well known, and undisputed. But what is not widely known is just how blood-soaked the hands of the RPF and Kagame are and how they have ruthlessly silenced (by, in numerous instances, killing) those who have first-hand knowledge of the RPF's crimes and shared it with international investigators, or were prepared to do so. The standard version of what occurred in Rwanda is that Kagame and the RPF heroically stopped a genocide that the rest of the world watched without lifting a finger. Yes, the outside world did fail to act, but Rever demolishes the conventional narrative that lionizes Kagame and the RPF as saviors. Emily Summers is a renowned interior designer and President/CEO of Emily Summers Design Associates. Beginning her career in 1979, she became known for her collaboration with architects and artists. This seems to be the standard reference book for California cruising. It contains essential information for yachtsmen sailing the California coast and offshore islands. It has many useful simplified charts and photos of approaches to harbors and anchorages. It also has a useful chapter on local weather forecasting. Although California weather is mostly pretty benign, it can also make life very difficult to any sailor who is unprepared for bad weather, and Fagan provides plenty of good advice on how to predict it, and how to deal with it.

I do enjoy the anecdotes and I don't mind processing outdated information. Where I draw the line is poorly written/edited work.

I *thought* I knew about the Channel Islands and the different weather systems around Southern California. I've sailed here for a few years, and have gone up into the Channel Islands. Heck, I was married on Catalina.Starting to read Fagan's book, it became quickly evident that I didn't know anything about this rich area. Fagan breaks down multi micro climates into detailed and descriptive blocks, highlighting which routes will show off what type of weather in different parts of the year. If you already know what the weather will be like in Santa Cruz Channel in October, or when Cuyler Harbor turns into a dangerous lee shore (and what conditions to watch for in advance), then I suppose you don't need this book.If you're going to be harbor hopping along the mainland, you can probably get by without it. But if you're going to be heading off the grid into the fringes of the no-kidding Pacific, you'd be foolish to read Fagan's book first. Ask anyone who's done a lot of sailing in the Channel Islands, and you'll hear "Fagan's book" pop up in discussion within a few minutes. Charlie's Charts, although useful in other areas (primarily down in Mexico) do not cut the mustard against Fagan.Highly recommended, and if you only have sailing book related to Southern California this should easily be it.

Cruised up and down the coast of SoCal and the Channel Islands using the information in this book. It has great details, suggestions and pictures. There isnt another book out there for SoCal as good as this one. I think without the book, you would miss out on some real gems.
