Keeper, by Mal Peet

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–When acclaimed South American journalist Paul Faustino begins his interview with World Cup soccer star El Gato, he expects to be recording the thoughts of a goalkeeper at the height of his career. He never envisioned hearing about a young, lonely boy growing up in the middle of a rain forest, who wandered upon a mysterious soccer field and an apparition that appeared to him daily and trained him to become the greatest goalkeeper ever known. Is El Gato mad? Is he suffering from hallucinations due to the stress of the game? Is there some truth to be discovered in his fantastic tale? Only at the conclusion of the interview and the resolution of who the Keeper really is and what he is waiting for will readers even think of putting down this fascinating book. Peet achieves his expressed desire to write an entirely new kind of soccer story, not only including the experience of play, but also mesmerizing readers with a supernatural mystery in a tale about relationships, loneliness, and believing in oneself. This is a well-written, fast-paced sports story that addresses far more than just the sport itself. Fans of Chris Crutcher's sports-themed novels will want to pick up this selection by a new and talented writer.–Kathryn Childs, Morris Mid/High School, OK Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Gr. 9-12. Published originally in the United Kingdom, this unusual novel won the 2004 Branford Boase Award and was short-listed for the Nestle Children's Book Prize. Framed as an interview between a South American sports reporter and the world's best soccer goalkeeper, the now 30-year-old "El Gato" relates how he developed his skills, achieved great fame, and won the coveted World Cup. His story is one of poverty and isolation in a small logging community, of strong family ties in a beloved jungle being inexorably denuded, and of intense focus on the game of soccer. If a coming-of-age tale meeting an environmental message framed by sports narrative weren't enough, a mystical element is added, as El Gato describes his rigorous soccer training by a ghost in a magical clearing hewn from dense foliage. El Gato's remembrances do not consistently take the reader with him, and disparate elements don't always gel. Rich depictions of family and forest are marred by stilted, implausible dialog and choppy transitions between present and past. With its lengthy descriptions of the game, this may appeal most to soccer fans. Holly KoellingCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I read this book for the schools summer reading program. I am a teacher and a former soccer player and coach. Even though the story as elements of fantasy and the supernatural, and is a sports story, it is, at its core, a story of family, of struggle, of growing up, and of giving back. The story is told as an interview between the world's best goalkeeper and a reporter. Through a long night of questions and answers, of fantastic stories and life growing up in the rain forest, the man who just helped his country win the biggest game in soccer, the World Cup final, tells the reporter, and US, the readers, what is truly important.A must read for soccer fans and sports fan. But also a great read for anyone who enjoys a story with a message.

This was an assigned book for my son’s summer reading. He ended up not liking it, so he switched assignments after starting this book. He said no matter how hard he tried, this book just couldn’t keep his interest and bored him. He’s 13.

This is not just for young adults as the back of the book implies. My son is a 16 year old select soccer player on a top ten team in the state of Washington and he loved it. So my wife read it and she liked it as well. So I read it and was surprised at how entertaining the story was. The mystical, or fantasy element wound around a very realistic story made for a great read. For those who actually play keeper (also called goalie or goalkeeper), the detailed scenes explaining how the keeper "reads" the leaning tendencies of the kicker as he shoots are incredible and actually taught my son, a midfielder, some things about shooting so as not to give away the direction of the shot. Keepers would get the same insights about shooters. And for those not into the esoterics of soccer you will surely enjoy the wonderful storyline of the underdog fighting through adversity.

The author shares his love and knowledge of this sport in a fantasy about a poor boy who is groomed to be the best Keeper in the world. The writing is so well done that even if you don't know soccer, you can picture the action and cheer for the saves! Imbedded in the story is a political cry to save the Rainforest. That message is effectively delivered but never gets in the way of an exciting story.

Loved this book! Would be great for middle school kids. It has a great story with a sweet twist at the end.

Summer reading project he enjoyed the book.

I am a fan of fantasy, not sports stories. And yet, from the opening lines, I was hooked. At its heart, it's the story of finding yourself and of honoring those who come before. Passing this along to my daughter to read!

so I had to read this book for school and when I first saw it I was like oh no it's gonna be those stupid school books that you don't get anything from its. I was completely wrong. The first page got me going and I would finish meals early just so I could go read it. It got you on the edge of your seat like what's gonna happen next? It was s intense but interesting. I got totally recommend this book!

There are lots of books on science writing available and they take you painstakingly through every nuance of structure and detail required to produce a scientific manuscript. This book is different. It focuses on how to write a compelling story. I have 70 published papers in international, peer-reviewed journals; and I want to go back to each and every one of them and rewrite them with the messages from this book clear in my head and clear to the reader. This book focuses on you as a writer first and foremost, and a scientist second. It distills what I've been trying to teach my own students, with insight and clarity far more considered and polished than my own, in an engaging and fun read. If you want to write proposals that get funded, and papers that get widely-cited, then read this book and put its lessons to work. I loved the book: it's now the lab-group reading for next semester.

This book was much more useful than I thought it would be. My expectation was that it would contain some helpful pointers, but that it would not revolutionize my writing. Having nearly 30 papers/book chapters, more than 1000 citations, and some funded proposals under my belt already, I thought I had a decent grasp on scientific writing. This book helped me realize that I had a lot to learn - and then taught it to me! The best part about it is that it solidifies nebulous ideas about good and bad writing, and provides concrete ways to organize your writing, from the level of the whole paper down to individual sentences. Now I wish I could go back in time to rewrite all of my previous papers! Also, I was expecting this book to be helpful, but dry read, but was pleasantly surprised by how engaging it was. Who would have thought that a book on science writing would actually be entertaining and funny, while being reassuring at the same time? It really is an entertaining and easy read, though.I have already had all of my graduate students read this book, and have been talking about it incessantly at meetings. My postdoc has been doing the same thing - without any prompting from me. It has had a profound influence on the way the folks in my lab think about science writing, and has altered my perspective on writing forever. Be warned, however, that after you read this book you will want to start relentlessly editing all of the scientific writing you read.

I recently read this book as well as David Lindsay's Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words. Both are good, but of the two, Schimel's book is more complete, more nuanced, and more fun to read. His main focus is that, in order to be read, remembered, and cited, you must present your work as an interesting story. He explains the elements of storytelling as they relate to science writing, and how to employ those elements throughout your paper. Each chapter has examples throughout and exercises at the end.I recommend both Schimel's book and Lindsay's for anyone who has to write about scientific research. If you want to choose only one, Lindsay is quicker, but Schimel is better.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It is easily one of the most useful and valuable books that any scientist or academic could read. Off the top of my head, I can only think of The Craft of Research as comparable.Schimel examines the craft of writing like a molecular biologist, addressing both the component units (sentence, paragraph, section), and like a novelist, discussing the overall arc and purpose of your writing. It is barely 200 pages long, but remarkably comprehensive. It helps that the book draws heavily upon two books that I love: Joseph Williams' book on Style, and the Heath brothers' book Make It Stick. Two outstanding choices. What makes the book so useful is that Schimel doesn't just tell you what to do: he shows you. The worked examples, and the commentary on what makes the example good science writing, is just superb. It also helps that Schimel distinguishes between writing about research that you have already done, and writing about research that you hope to do. So this book is useful for grant writers and report writers. What makes the book so valuable is that Schimel a good deal of time dealing with one of the main challenges for beginning researchers: identifying and articulating exactly what it is you hope to learn from the (proposed) research.Chapter 20: Writing for the Public, where Schimel discusses the "message box", is worth the price of the book alone.Quite simply, this book should be handed out to every student in the natural and social sciences, the day they start school.

I love this book! The author, Joshua Schimel, is quite correct in asserting that science writing must go beyond getting everything technically correct to being a compelling story that grabs the reader's attention as to the significance of what has been found. That will move the writing toward getting published and toward being appreciated for its substance and value, as indicated by being cited. And it will move research proposals toward getting funded. So buy this book for excellent guidance and examples on how to write science in an engaging and effective manner that has impact on a broad audience rather than just narrow cliques. That said, though, writing research proposals that get funded requires more than compelling writing. That is certainly necessary, but not sufficient. More is required, such as a well-thought-out logic model, a detailed and appropriate budget, and a budget narrative that links the written narrative to resources and what can realistically be accomplished. So for the whole package on successfully writing research proposals, I recommend this book and Cynthia Carr's "The Nuts & Bolts of Grant Writing." Carr's book burrows into the real-life details of how to write proposals within college and university settings that will engage reviewers and improve the likelihood of getting funded. For successfully writing research proposals the two books complement each other well, and I recommend buying both.

Krystyna was born in Obertyn, Poland. Her father was a photographer by profession. Initially, she attended a Ukrainian school in Obertyn. Further education was interrupted by the war, when the town was under the management of the Ukrainian and German Nazis and Krystyna, as a 9 year old girl, was exiled with her family and all other Jews from Obertyn to the ghetto in Kolomyja. The life conditions in which Obertyn Jews had to live are described in the poem Molasa - Ghetto Sweets; she shows in a detailed way, the psychological and physical suffering caused by hunger. Once I started this book I couldn’t stop reading it. At times it was difficult to read. The fact that someone as young as Krystyna was when she went through all of these terrible events survived is a testament to her faith. Raised a Jew she was interested in her Catholic friends religion. She kept her knowledge secret. This and her mom’s statement that “God protects orphans”, helped carry her through this hardship. For those who want to read a clean cut memoir that takes them from point A to point B smoothly, you need to know that this doesn’t happen in this book. I believe that is why I enjoyed it. It reads like someone who is telling a story and remembers it in bits a pieces. The author has done an excellent job of putting things in chronological order. However, It is obvious that there are gaps in her memory. This makes it seem even more authentic. We remember things and then what we remember triggers another memory. However, we don’t want to interrupt our story so we throw that thought in and tell our audience we will discuss it in more detail later. So many people who have survived the Holocaust came out bitter. No life was not easy and was not fair to the author. However, she took the lessons learned and used them in a positive way to shape her life.We teach about the Holocaust in our eighth and ninth grade English Language Arts Classes. This is definitely a book I will put on my shelves at school. It is another voice added to so many. Yet this is told in a manner my students will definitely be able to understand. I highly recommend this book.

This is unlike any other memoir I have read before! A beyond heart-warming story of Krystyna Carmi a beautiful little girl who lost her family during the holocaust. Krystyna was the only child survivor from all the Jewish children of Oberty. She shares her courageous story of her life. Each page takes you on a journey as if you were there walking hand in hand with Krystyna. Seeing things through her eyes, smelling the scents she did. Feeling the pain and heartache that followed. The Struggle of what she went through to get where she is in life. Her journey was not an easy one at all!One thing that really makes this book even more captivating, is all the beautiful pictures! It really makes you not only connect to the Author but also to the other people in the book. By the time you reach the end of this beautiful book, you’ll want to re-read it all over again. The detail and writting style that Krystyna shares with her readers are amazing. It brings so much insight into what happened during World War II that we may not already know. This is definitely a MUST READ! But be warned, you’ll need some tissues!

It took me about 3 days to read the book. The first day I read primarily the part of Krystyna's life before the war. This part to me didn't grab my attention. There was nothing really interesting about it, however, I wanted to keep reading. Krystyna was writing about her life before the war, during the good times. She was describing her interactions with other children, and how she was treated in her own family. The second day I was reading about the war times, and I read as much as I could. I am glad I continued reading as this part is the most strident, vibrant part of the book. It is truly incredible what Krystyna survived through as a little girl. This part of the book was very emotional, and colorful, and made the events that transpired sound very realistic. I think Krystyna Carmi is successful at describing these events as she still remembers so much, and the colorful details of the descriptions throughout the book really make the story stand out and almost come to life. The third day of my reading was the part of the escape, and the long hiding in the woods, as well as all the events after the World War II was over.It is interesting for me to read the story because, really, Krystyna is almost the same age now as my aunt. I am very impressed with all the memories described in the book, all of the details, as well as the courage that Krystyna had to put it all down on paper.Overall, this is a great book mostly due to the events described and the memories that needed to be put on paper. This generation of war survivors is almost gone now, as in my family most of the elders are deceased and I wouldn't be able to hear their war stories any more. This is nice that Krystyna was able to share her experiences, and sadness with the world in this book.I was amazed with the number of photographs that were found and preserved from those times, and the photos really make the book that much more vivid and real.I studied history from the perspective of a Soviet child in the 80-90s, and it is always interesting for me to read what it was like from the point of view of a real person living in Poland during the war, and learn what it was like. There is never going to be a way to understand why this happened to so many people who suffered and were tortured during the Holocaust, or all of the other genocides done to all of other nations throughout time. These are disgraceful pages of history, and people will never be able to pay back for what was done. It is not possible to return the families lost, and to undo the tortures. It is important to read about it though, and to learn, and never let this happen again. I feel helpless reading about human racism. I hope that more people can read this book, and suffer through with Krystyna, and feel compassion to one another never to let genocides happen again.Sample was provided free of charge for reading and a review.

The author really details her childhood. This was nice. There is nothing worse about reading a memoir then to get the feeling that the author has only given the readers the bare bones of their story. Not that every, little detail needs to be provided. Yet, when I am reading a memoir I am wanting to feel like I got to know the author or the subject matter that the memoir is written on.In this book, I really did feel like I got an clear image of what life was like for Krystyna growing up. When she talked about her family, I felt like I wanted to be a part of her family. The pictures that are featured in this book are great. I like how the author placed them throughout the book; instead of all in the center of the book or at the end. Not that I really needed the images to tell the story as I got an instant image in my head reading the book. However, the images helped with the story. Due to the placement of them, they enhanced the story more. Not all great memories but you can't expect that when people are dying in the ghetto. You really appreciate life more when you read stories like Krystyna's. This book is easy reading. If you enjoy reading memoirs than you have to check this book out.

The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book, by Deborah Quilter

From Library Journal

Because its initial symptoms are innocuous, "repetitive strain injury [RSI] starts with a whisper and ends with a scream." Quilter, a health writer with her own website on RSI, focuses here on self-care and successfully living with RSI by taking a holistic approach, advocating relaxation and overall fitness. She offers tips for saving one's hands during daily tasks, improving one's sex life, and going back to work, along with the usual recommendations on ergonomics. Although much space is devoted to computer usage, the author acknowledges other occupations and activities that contribute to or aggravate RSI. The epilog provides a unique and upbeat approach by describing RSI's "gifts." Narrower in focus than Emil Pascarelli and Quilter's earlier Repetitive Strain Injury (LJ 2/94) or Sandra Peddie's Repetitive Strain Injury Sourcebook (LJ 12/97), this work is recommended for libraries serving people already diagnosed with RSI.?Dixie Jones, Louisiana State Univ. Medical Ctr. Lib., ShreveportCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Use of the hands is of crucial importance in daily life. This book explores the physical, psychological, and economic realities of long-term repetitive-strain injury (RSI) to the upper extremity, a topic on which Quilter conducts workshops and has published previously. A foreword by a hand surgeon claims that RSI is reaching epidemic proportions, due to "poor tool design and the increasingly repetitive nature of many jobs," particularly computer work. Since injury happens over months and years, it is often difficult to diagnose and treat, let alone find a practitioner able to help. Quilter charts the stages of injury, the often arduous paths to recovery, medical treatments available, self-help techniques (including relaxation and stress relief), proper posture and daily exercise, and how to protect the hands during home and work tasks. Ergonomic tips for common work-related situations, such as computer use, handwriting, and playing musical instruments, are covered. The author concludes with guidance on changing or creating careers. When my right wrist/hand/arm started hurting from overusing a mouse, a friend told me her partner had cured a similar problem simply by following the advice in a book. I took three books out of the local library; this turns out to be the one she remembered, and after reading it I wanted a copy permanently on my shelves, so I bought it. It hasn't "cured" me, but it certainly helps me understand what needed to be fixed ergonomically.

This book was very helpful to me when I was experiencing tremendous wrist pain and doctors couldn't be sure if I had Carpel Tunnel or Tendonitis. Over time it seemed that it wasn't Carpel Tunnel afterall so I found this book to be most helpful.

This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing. Please also notice that Deborah Quilter is not a medical professional but a health writer who has had RSI herself. There is a good, explicit (but short) section on how to change your typing which I haven't seen other places.

I rarely go to the supermarket without seeing checkout clerks in wrist braces and wanting to tell them (and their bosses) about Ms Quilter's books. I have this book as well as the earlier one she co-authored with Dr Emil Pascarelli. Ms. Quilter offers no miracle cures or quick fixes. But I followed her sensible advice (including a visit to my doctor) when I had my first keyboard injury some years ago, and I got better. Unfortunately, I did NOT want to hear that I was now "living with RSI" forever. Like several of the negative reviewers here, I found the author's warnings dire and depressing. However, my subsequent experience with re-injuring myself (over and over) convinced me that Ms Quilter is right. "Recovery" is only possible when you develop the "mindfulness" that I consider this book's single most important message. RSI is not like a broken bone that knits up as good as new. It's like a bad back. If I don't do my back exercises, my back goes out. If I don't follow Ms Quilter's preventive tips, my RSI flares up. My conclusion is that RSI is best viewed as a chronic condition, and the reviewers who find this point of view depressing are shooting the messenger. BTW, once RSI mindfulness becomes a habit, it is about as depressing as putting on a seat belt.

I just ordered my 4th copy of Deborah QUilter's book. I fell down tonight and landed on my right hand and wrist. When I got home I went to my bookshelf to look up how to treat my sore wrist and hand, but the book was gone. I realized I'd "loaned" it to a friend who was complaining of wrist and neck pain from too much time at the computer. I love this book because of the practical information on how to take care of myself. Quilter's advice gives me hope that if I pay attention and take care of myself, I can stop my RSI (aka "carpal tunnel") from getting worse and even improve it. That's more encouraging than what I've been told by doctors. Her writing speaks to me like a friend who knows what I've been through. It's not condescending like many medical books. It isn't new-agey. It seems real, sensible. Like the other reviews here, there are scary stories of what can happen because of RSI. I worked for years as a legal word processing operator as well as writing and publishing a novel and magazine articles. My hands are my work tools. I take this very seriously. When it hurts to open a jar or pick up my cat, that is frightening. I took my hands and wrists for granted until they started throbbing and having darting pains. Quilter's book helped me to first live with my aches & pains in a manageable way. Then, following her suggestions like proper posture and taking breaks from the keyboard I have improved and feel so much better! I also enjoy her subtle sense of humor and was glad she put in a section on sex. I wasn't expecting that when I first read the book but it made me realize I wasn't the only one who had trouble "getting a grip" on the situation. :-)As for the "dystopic" stories mentioned in previous reviews, I thought Ms. Quilter made it apparent that some suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't need to change careers or stop typing forever. Maybe some injured people do. I need to be able continue writing without pain and discomfort. This book helped me learn how to do just that and I highly recommend it!

Needed an additional book for our work library, good book to add and use as a reference for Ergonomics, lots of good information provided in this book.

Great book, except:Like many authors of medical self-help books, Quilter urges her readers to enlist competent medical help. Unfortunately, she does not say that although one can find good, knowledgeable physical therapists, it is almost impossible to find an American medical doctor who knows anything about RSI. She does not mention that although it is an official diagnostic category in the UK, Australia and the Netherlands, neither RSI, nor any medical synonyms (i.e. overuse syndrome, cumulative trauma disorder, etc.) appear in American diagnostic guides (although other "controversial" syndromes like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome do!) So ... American doctors can not officially "know" about RSI. This also makes it difficult for RSIers to follow Quilter's most important recommendations -- rest and pacing, since we often need medical justification (at least a doctor's note) to get appropriate accomodations at work.

Six to Sixty, this is a great second book about Scratch. The 1st book in any programming language is about syntax or grammar and objects and actions. The 2nd should always be about the fun you can have with that language. Without some fun why would spend the time to dig deeper or find the tricks or develope expertise. For the last forty years 'games' fave been and are now that fun! Enjoy.

This is a very well written book, specially for the young who want to get started with programming. My 7 year old son has being able to try the different projects and get immediate results out of it with minor help. Even thought there are lots of examples and even videos on the internet that illustrate how to use the Scratch building blocks for programming, the step by step approach in this book is definitely a big plus.

Good book, easy to follow. But don't rely on my word because I know programming already. I taught three elementary kids with it for three weeks during summer vacation. And they loved it. I intended to teach them about 1 hour 30 minutes including typing lesson. But each lesson ended up over two hours without break. Kids loved it so much that they refused to end the lesson, a rare case, indeed.

Great step-by-step guide with plenty of room for creativity. I've spent hours with my son, enjoying the projects and modifying them.

This book helped me a lot.

My 11 year old niece loves this book and it's very easy for her to follow along on her own.

kid loved it and already finished the whole thing!! :)

Great little book for beginning programmers.
