They say the winners write the histories. Maybe. This book is an excellent treatise on the bravery and professionalism of the Dutch and Belgium forces which actually did the tough fighting which won the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. A little known scandal of history is how Wellington scorned his Dutch and Belgian allies before the fight, had his bacon saved by them at Quatre Braswhen he had not bothered to gather his forces from all over Belgium to face Napoleon's already reported advance, and then won the Battle of Waterloo by the Dutch and Belgian regiments facing down the Imperial Guard and the best of the French Army. He went back to England where he in his own writings, and his numerous sycophants in theirs, continued to snub their allies and lionize Wellington and his English soldiers as the sole victors of the battle. Dr. Baker-Smith has courageously bucked the trend within the English-language histories, and brings out the amazing details of the courageous Dutch-Belgian forces in the campaign. Dutch and Belgian historians have given more balanced coverage to this campaign for the last century and a half, but who reads Dutch/Fleming in our own culture? I really appreciated the way this book opened my eyes to the Wellington propaganda machine, and corrected my understanding of the true history of this campaign. I'll say this, as you look through history, if anyone is the master of propaganda (perhaps aside from Russia) it's the English. But don't let my rant deter you from picking up this neat, little photograph of a little story in the Napoleonic literature. The author only mentions the Wellington scam, and then gets in with the story. I give it four stars because I think it would have benefited from more tactical.maps of the movements and positions of the forces.

A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com'Ms. Barker-Smith’s book joins a number of recent studies with new takes on the events of June 1815, such as Peter Hofschrser’s "1815 The Waterloo Campaign: The German Victory" or Andrew W. Field’s "Prelude to Waterloo: Quatre Bras, The French Perspective" and "Waterloo: the French Perspective". By perusing Belgian and Dutch archives, memoirs, and histories, she has put together an impressive study of the role of the largely overlooked – not to say dismissed and even denigrated – Dutch-Belgian troops who made up about a third of Wellington’s army during the campaign. She makes an excellent case that these troops, and the often belittled Prince of Orange who commanded them, made a solid contribution to the Allied victory, on several occasions playing a critical role. Baker-Smith offers some analysis of the reasons these troops received less credit than was their due, noting, of course, Wellington’s gigantic ego as one factor, but more importantly noting that the neglect by historians of the Dutch and Belgian documents played an important role in their slighting of these troops. In several instances she is able to compare how particular events unfolded as understood by British observers with the very same events as viewed by their Dutch or Belgian counterparts, reminding us that perspective can color interpretation. This makes Wellington’s Hidden Heroes a valuable addition to the literature on Waterloo.'For the full review, see StrategyPage.Com

Exceptional Book.... a must-have for Waterloo Campaign Enthusiasts. In truth, I love reading most books about the otherwise grim and fascinating history of this world-changing saga dating back 200 years. It's a tale of endless discoveries and of varying opinions, versions, erroneous conclusions and rethinking of what we thought we knew about this history. So in all this sea of information any new book on the topic really has to explode with a good basic telling of the campaign to the general reader and starting historians, and also satisfy with intelligent indulgence the niche it explores related to a particular angle it brings to an already savvy Waterloo informed community. This book caught my eye right away as do most collected-works featuring the controversial topic of the Netherland's kingdom military role in the Waterloo campaign. This controversy usually revolving around actually clarifying misconceptions, lies, paranoia and self-inflicted painful bias attitudes that many ultra-nationals typically begrudgingly hold against sources that expose as tripe their maliciously held reinventions of history against targeted non-guilty nationalities.I was very eager to read this book. Overall it's a fantastic compact historical source filled lavishly with witness accounts, other notable authors opinions of a wide variety of campaign events. The book tackles all controversies and mostly moves along at a pleasing reading pace.Avoiding any spoiler alerts I'm writing a lengthy summarized review; despite appearances of being too telling, my review is hardly revealing of the detailed content itself. The writer is obviously expertly familiar with all aspects of Napoleonic history and in telling a well written story that sticks with common-sense.Chapters are delightfully short in this 200 page book. It starts with gratitude to many helpers including British sources. Very thankfully, the history of the Netherlands Kingdom is clarified in a lovely concise short few pages from its Belgian and Dutch separate beginnings and various Kingdoms inclusions of each before expanding on the Congress of Vienna's creation of the Kingdom. The King is often mentioned in the creation of the new Dutch-Belgian army and the Nassau regiments within - and importantly dwells upon the backgrounds of the multi-lingual, Peninsular veteran Prince of Orange and important generals Rebecque, Perponcher and Saxe-Weimar [ who all crucially saved the Allied army and Prussians from disaster by independent quick-thinking actions taken early on June 15th when the surprise Napoleon's French offensive struck at Charleroi between their allies' armies ].The short chapters proceed to carefully interweave the historical campaign story with the commonly-held controversies associated with the Netherland's army as the appeared. Intelligently all the accusations and myths are explored in an open manner with counter-witnesses, logical conclusions, plausible speculations. Pre-war logistics and preparation of the Netherland's army is covered in one chapter, as are Allied army HQ intelligence reports and patrol messages covered in another. The tempo of he book rises strikingly with the chapter tackling the crucial June 15th manouevres by the Prince of Orange and battle-experienced staff of the Netherland's units closest to the opening French advance. Whereas Wellington clearly initially ordered ALL his troops to concentrate at points away from nearing with his Prussian allies as was the initial plan, instead the Netherland's staff did the unthinkable and smartest option - disobey Wellington's orders and instead hold onto the obvious blocking spot which prevented Napoleon's wing commander Ney from effectively splitting the allies in two and ultimately forcing a game-ending defeat on Blucher and thus thereafter compelling the outnumbered army of Wellington to run back to the Belgian ports. The essay related to Wellington's clumsy counter-moves upon reacting to the opening French hostilities is well explained with diverse information references and thus clarifying the legend of Wellington's deceit to the Prussian commanders that his army was assembling in the area very quickly when in fact it would take 2 days before his army could nearly fully combine. The author smartly explores all the actual moves and reasoning behind each Allied commander's decisions that critical day of June 15...... timing was everything - including the veteran Nassau commander Saxe-Weimar's own initiative to hustle his battalions of Nassauers to the crossroads of Quatre Bras from a few miles away - arriving barely 1 hour before a French Imperial Guard probe could capture the campaign winning prize that would have opened a triumphant French march up to Brussels. The book then intricately details the myths and error-filled impressions of cowardice by witnesses and historians of the Netherland's army at the battles of Quatre-Bras and Waterloo. Added are accounts of British and Prussian command follies - particularly both Blucher and Wellington being smug in believing Napoleon was in no position to launch an offensive against them before the Coalition Allies' other armies would arrive by July 1815.Also pointed out in dedicated chapters are the expected topic of performance of Bylandt's brigade - untold heroics at Quatre-Bras and undeserved scorn at Waterloo - covered as well, General Chasse/ Col.Detmers brigade finale-attack that had the hidden 'glory' of sending the first Imperial Middle Guard attack-column running from its stalled position against that brave part of British Gen.Halkett's brigade which defiantly made a last stand choice and was even readying to charge those Guards themselves - This suppressed episode gets no comparison to the glory and accolades given to the Scots Greys similarly decisive scattering of much of one of D'Erlon's divisions. The rescue of the Scots Grey's by Gen.Ghingy's 'foreigner' cavalry is also highlighted as is General Tripp's 'hidden' Heavy cavalry charge against the French cavalry supporting D'Erlon that seems to have initiated Uxbridge's own decisive Heavy cavalry charges. Mentions are made of equally important roles of Saxe-Weimar's Nassauer troops at Hougoumont stronghold and at the fortified positions on Wellington's left flank where the Prussians were expected to link up.The author also portrays the other allied contingents the Brunswickers and KGL units using related perceptions, histories, roles they played alongside numerous controversies and myths about them; particularly the much debated Prince of Orange perceived 2 big battle blunders are openly discussed as is his noted bravery and strategic intelligence. Lack of British official and High Command credit to known Netherland's army successes are discussed.A very poignant after-battle study is made - somewhat excessively in being spread out in 3 further chapters with former stated information becoming repetitive.I was tempted to give a 4-star rating because there are some minor historical mistakes [ -including; responsibility of French cavalry charge decisions, numbers of defenders at La Haye Sainte strongpoint, Grouchy and Ney clear strategic orders they were given in campaign, and the idea Grouchy could have simply marched westwards to join Napoleon in spite of no roads and flooded waterways in the way],. And there are crucial omissions of certain facts that would provide for strong arguments if not conclusive evidence; ie, many British witness accounts stating seeing Bylandt's brigade fought alongside Picton's 2 brigades against D'Erlon's attack, and also the most striking of a well-read British soldier [ Halkett's brigade ] witness account describing Chasse's glorious charge against the Guard are not fully recounted here for some strange reason. My only other biggest peeves with the book which does have nice pictures in it, are that there is no detailed tables for order of battle shown for the Netherland's army of 1815 - a necessity in most army-specific collective-works books in my opinion. Another flop in my opinion are no battle maps are added to expose controversy errors [ ie, Bylandt's brigade's true position not exposed on June 18th and its subsequent place still in battle after D'Erlon's attack] - and the battle positions across Wellington's line of the various units of Chasse and Perponcher's and the Nassau battalions at Waterloo. A map of the June 15th/16th positions of the Netherland's army units near/ at Quatre-Bras would have been an excellent addition too. I'm also curious and disappointed that the Hanoverian brigades are hardly mentioned in their conspicuous Waterloo roles near Hougoumont fortress, in the allied center, and amidst Perponcher and Picton's Divisions on the Allied left wing.I can guarantee that in spite of my lengthy review, I've only just scratched the surface of the volumes of revealing exciting collected information that the author has compiled ever-so excellently. It is everything the book says on one of its opening pages;"This book fully examines the role of the almost-forgotten third of the Allied army [Wellington's army]."

The Darkest Summer: Pusan and Inchon 1950: The Battles That Saved South Korea--and the Marines--from Extinction, by Bill Sloan

Review

""The Darkest Summer" is not only exciting reading -- a cautionary tale about Korea in 1950 -- but it should also make every sensible reader ask why it's a good idea to fight in faraway foreign countries like Korea, or Afghanistan today, without a plan for victory or an exit strategy." -- Michael Korda, author of "Ike""How did we get enmeshed in this struggle halfway around the world? Was it worth it? Was it victory, defeat, or merely stalemate? In Bill Sloan's well-told tale, I found my answers." -- Joseph E. Persico, author of "Roosevelt's Secret War"""The Darkest Summer" is a truly heroic book. In heart-pounding detail, Bill Sloan recounts the most momentous season in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps -- the fateful summer of 1950. Riveting from the first page to the last." -- Alex Kershaw, author of" Escape from the Deep" and "The Bedford Boys""There is no story quite like this in military history -- the epic tale of how the American Army, the mightiest war machine in the history of the world in 1945, was surprised and overrun a mere five years later by a nation that had been a subject-state of Japan in 1945. And then how America's pathetically ill-prepared armed forces regrouped with astonishing speed and launched one of the most audacious counteroffensives in military annals, one that saved South Korea from communism and changed the course of world history. The Darkest Summer is a stunningly good military history, crafted in the style of an accomplished novel, with characters that are almost too interesting to be believed." -- Donald L. Miller, author of "Masters of the Air"""The Darkest Summer" is a harrowing and heroic tale of Korean War valor. By interviewing U.S. Marines who fought at Pusan and Inchon, Bill Sloan transports the reader to ground zero in Korea. A truly riveting read." -- Douglas Brinkley, author of "The Wilderness Warrior""In 1950, President Truman and others were in the process of a military reunifying and downsizing that would have essentially eliminated the U.S. Marine Corps. Then came Korea, and in the battles for Pusan and Inchon, the Marines did what had to be done. Bill Sloan, the premier chronicler of war at the ground level, tells the whole awful, bloody story in his superb "The Darkest Summer", a dead-on account that answers forever the question, 'What is war really like?'" -- Jim Lehrer, anchor of "The NewsHour" on PBS and author of "Oh, Johnny"

Well told story about the fateful summer of 1950, when the Korean war began and the UN-forces and the ROK-armys stand on the Pusan perimeter along the Naktong river. It also covers the story of the ill-fated Task Force Smith hopeless attempts to stop the North Korean advance. The first US Marines that landed in Korea were dispatched directly to face the NKPA.During these battles the Marines developted the close knit cooperation between the men on the ground and the planes flying close air support of the aircraft carriers based offshore. Tactics that were to serve them well later at the Chosin reservoir and a decade later in Vietnam.Excellent cover on the details of the landings at Inchon and the fighting to recapture Seoul.Once the word of the landings reached the North Korean units in the far south, the army began to disintegrated. It also shows the mistake McArthur made by sending an invasion force around the Korean peninsula, from Inchon to land close to Hungnam, in that way providing many NKPA units a chance to escape to the north.

I want to like this book. I've read Bill Sloan previously, and like his material. I suppose "The Darkest Summer" is an exception. It's good, but the kindle version is missing pages, so its impossible to follow the story completely. The kindle version also has no maps. I wish publishers could understand how difficult it is to read a military history without maps to track the action geographically. Don't take this as a criticism of Bill Sloan, he's a very good author. His publishers have failed him with regards to the kindle version of this book.

Mr Sloan has done something unique, held my attention on a subject that I have read much on. His account of the three critical months that saved South Korea and the US Marines as an organiazed fighting unit. Interesting accounts of the brutal fights and the brave army and Marines that stemmed the tide of the North koreans. It is packed with facts, amazing characters that did the impposible and faced a ruthless foe bent on victory at any cost.I would rank this among Mr Sloan's best works and I have read several of his other books. I recommend this title for anyone wanting to learn more about our brave military members then and now and to discover the horrific conditions they had to back in 1950 - the year I was born. Tough guys and glad we had men like these when we needed them. Real American heroes and Sloan does justice to the other UN forces that stepped up to the plate in dire times as these.

Fantastic account of the early days of the Korean war (UN police action). I was especially interested in the formation and employment of the 1st Marine Brigade early in the war. My father joined B/1/5 as second platoon commander in November, 1950 as the Regiment advanced towards the Yalu river and the famous "frozen Chosin" action. Incredible accounts of Marines doing what Marines do best. I actually bought it for a friend of mine who served with my dad at that time as a squad leader, second platoon, B/1/5. He thoroughly enjoyed it also.

This account of the war in Korea aptly demonstrates how the heroic sacrifices of the combat troops were required to offset the hubris of the top commanders that pushed an agenda that called for their continued sacrifice.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time, I learned things that I didn't know about the Korean war, a very personal book for me,The Darkest Summer: Pusan and Inchon 1950: The Battles That Saved South Korea--and the Marines--from Extinction featuring a relative and war hero 2nd Marine Lt. Frank Muetzel, this is one of those books that is very hard to put down once you start reading it, fast pace and extremely intriguing with every page you turn to, if you want to read an excelent book about the hard fought Korean war, then you will not go wrong with this book " The Darkest Summer" by Bill Sloan.

Another Bill Sloan book about war, the guy really knows how to tell a good story and make you have some small idea of what the soldiers on the ground went through. This "little forgotten" was a near disaster for us and this book tells how lucky we were to have survived.

This is my first Korean War book. I've read all of Bill Sloan's WWII books and really enjoyed them. They stand alone from a lot of military history books because of the way Mr. Sloan slices out a story from or about a group of men or unit or action and tells a story. It's not dry history, but storytelling, and by that I do not mean made-up or embellished either. It's telling a story but not so deep you can't enjoy the read. ( Some military history books require great effort ).I'm almost done reading this book and will edit ( update ) when finished, but can already remark on how satisfying this book is to read. Since this is my first Korean War book, I am only judging this book and how it satisfies my desire to learn about the premise of the book and so far, Sloan sets it up nicely and then is clearly and richly, filling in on the premise. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.It's quite clear to me that this was an awful time to be in the armed services and the veterans of this war deserve great honor and our support. The Korean War is still forgotten by too many. This book, with others, is a great way to learn more..UPDATE: 4/29/10: Finished book a few weeks ago. It is excellent throughout and I recommend it. Well done and satisfying.

Review

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER#5 on Amazon's Best 100 Books of the YearA Mother Jones Best Book of the YearAn Outside Best Adventure Book of the Year“Extraordinary...Mr. Kizzia has done an outstanding job unpacking Pilgrim's story; the book is superbly researched, the writing clear and unflinching.” —Wall Street Journal“Pilgrim's Wilderness is measured, painstakingly reported and gripping, giving us a true look at an escapist nightmare in America's mythic and fading frontier.” —Los Angeles Times“Not since The Shining has family life off the grid seemed as terrifying as it does in Pilgrim’s Wilderness, by Tom Kizzia, but this time the chills come from nonfiction.” —Arts Beat, New York Times“With even reporting and spare, lovely prose, Kizzia exposes the tyrannies of faith, and a family’s desperate unraveling. It will make your skin crawl.” —The Daily Beast“For those awaiting the next Jon Krakauer-esque classic, look to an Alaskan writer named Tom Kizzia... A gripping nonfiction thriller told with masterful clarity...I’m betting it will be the sleeper hit of the summer. Put it at the top of your stack.” —Outside Magazine“Reads like a bewitching, brilliant novel... Even in the hands of a mediocre writer, this story would be mesmerizing. But Kizzia’s gifts as a journalist and writer are such that it is a powerhouse of a book, destined to become a wilderness-tale classic like Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild. On one level, it’s a brilliant exploration of the kinds of frontier issues that most of America put away more than 100 years ago—rugged individualism vs. community cooperation and compromise, and wilderness harnessers vs. preservationists. But most and best of all, it is the story of how a pack of illiterate, brainwashed children came to realize that the man they looked up to as a god was actually a tyrant, and how they found the courage to break free. Here’s to them, and to Kizzia for telling their incredible story.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune“Kizzia is a smart, tough reporter who knows a good story when he sees one and doesn't let go... [Pilgrim’s Wilderness] is a masterful book. One of its strengths is that by sticking to the story and not trying to do too much, it does just about everything. Another is the way Kizzia withholds information until the right moment, building suspense by staying with a linear narrative that gradually reveals the monster at the center.” —Portland Oregonian“Absorbing...The family’s brutal unraveling is a shocking tale readers won’t soon forget.” —Seattle Times “The central figure in this book crosses paths with an incredible constellation of the famous and notorious and becomes a sort of evil, Alaskan Forrest Gump...an irresistible page-turner.” —Dallas Morning News“The mixture of Texas weirdness with Alaska nativism provides for riveting reading...Kizzia expertly goes back and forth in time to reveal the details of Papa Pilgrim's journey from would-be messiah to pariah.” —Austin American Statesman“As the Pilgrims go from activists championed by Sarah Palin to musicians beloved by Portland hipsters to a horrifying fall from grace, Kizzia’s clear-eyed depiction never wavers. His even-handed and, at times, sympathetic treatment of the Pilgrims makes the full reveal of Hale’s monstrous behavior that much more appalling—and the tale of redemption that ends the book that much more heart-wrenching.” —Metropulse“A riveting read.” —Texas Monthly“Sends readers on a roller-coaster ride that is as thrilling as it is shocking. Kizzia’s work is a testament to both the cruelty and resiliency of the human spirit, capturing the sort of life-and-death struggle that can only occur on the fringes of modern-day civilization.” —Publishers Weekly“Meticulously researched, Pilgrim’s Wilderness is an absorbing and substantive education on America’s Last Frontier encased in a blood-pumping, nightmarish family drama as brutal as the wilderness itself. Kizzia writes of Alaska with the affection and steadiness of a weathered travel guide—the kind who knows the best route in. And the best route out.” —Kirkus Reviews“Strong work of reportage... [Papa Pilgrim's] intriguing past crumbles in comparison to his excruciating cruelty and to the inspiring grace and strength of his children.” —Booklist “The riveting story of a megalomaniacal sociopath who left a trail of woe from Texas to the Great White North, Pilgrim’s Wilderness lends credence to the maxim that the unadulterated truth, when conveyed with sufficient skill, is not only more illuminating than fiction, but also more entertaining. Tom Kizzia has written an uncommonly insightful book about post-frontier Alaska, an ambitious literary work disguised as a page-turner, very much in the tradition of Edward Hoagland’s Notes From the Century Before and John McPhee’s Coming into the Country.” —Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild and Under the Banner of Heaven“This is a riveting, mesmerizing story, stunning and eloquent all at the same time.  I simply couldn't put it down.” —Ken Burns, filmmaker, The Civil War and The National Parks: America's Best Idea“Tom Kizzia's superb book is startling, unpredictable, haunting, clear-eyed, unrelenting, sad, and beautiful.  Pilgrim's Wilderness, in other words, is like Alaska itself, a subject the author understands deeply and evokes with uncommon skill.” —David Maraniss, author of When Pride Still Mattered and They Marched into Sunlight“What an epic story—sociopathy and crazy ideology hits the final frontier.  Jon Krakauer couldn’t have done it any better.” —Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth and Deep Economy“Pilgrim’s Wilderness is a fine book, methodically narrating a tale of libertarianism gone haywire on a genuine frontier.” —Edward Hoagland, author of Children Are Diamonds“Pilgrim’s Wilderness is a terrifying masterpiece, elegantly written, painstakingly researched, and impossible to put down.  Tom Kizzia has created a classic American Gothic, chilling, irresistible and wise.” —Blaine Harden, author of Escape from Camp 14“Tom Kizzia’s Pilgrim’s Wilderness is a bizarre and twisted Alaska saga of mythic proportions. This nonfiction gem has ‘Hollywood hit’ written all over it. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down.” —Douglas Brinkley, author of The Quiet World“There isn't a bad sentence in Pilgrim’s Wilderness, not a dull page or sour note.  A masterpiece of reporting and storytelling.” —Zev Chafets, author of Cooperstown Confidential and A Match Made in Heaven“The bizarre and tragic true story that unfolds in the pages of this extraordinary book is like nothing else I have ever read.  Through prodigious research, blending compassion with investigative skill, Tom Kizzia has woven a mythic tale out of that most mythic of American landscapes – Alaska.” —David Roberts, author of Alone on the Ice“Tom Kizzia hasn't just observed and written about Alaska for three-plus decades, he's lived it.  Pilgrim's Wilderness is a story that needed to be told by the only man who could tell it.” —Tom Bodett, author of Williwaw! and The End of the Road“Alaska as a land of self-invention and frontier contradictions has never been better captured than in Pilgrim’s Wilderness.  Tom Kizzia, “Neighbor Tom” to the enigmatic figure at the center of this riveting story, combines an insider’s view with thorough and compassionate investigative reporting.  This fascinating, harrowing, ultimately redemptive, and beautifully written account is sure to become a classic.” —Nancy Lord, former Alaska Writer Laureate and author of Fish Camp, Beluga Days and Early Warming“In Pilgrim's Wilderness Tom Kizzia uncovers the tragic confrontation between America's frontier past and its settled future. 'The Last Frontier' is the hot bed and Alaskans probably the most divided and conflicted of all. Mix this with the attraction that frontiers have for the unstable, darker forces in the human personality and we get the startling case of Papa Pilgrim and his family, as well as a hell of a yarn.” —Carl Pope, former executive director of The Sierra Club and author of Strategic Ignorance“A stunning and downright scary tale by one of Alaska's most knowledgeable journalists.  Tom Kizzia's investigative talents and his love of America's frontier state come through clearly in this true story that reads like a novel.” —James Risser, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting“Pilgrim’s Wilderness is not a book—it’s a powerful magnet, and once you begin you will not be able to pull yourself away. This spellbinding, shocking, and, yes, inspirational story of a family’s journey into the heart of darkness delivers the raw power and revelatory truth of a Scorcese film. Except better, because every word is true.” —Daniel Coyle, author of The Secret Race and The Talent Code.

The true story of a modern-day family of 17 living off the grid in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park above McCarthy, Alaska...their battles with the National Park Service and the affects they have on others living in the area. From the outside, the family appear a close knit and traditionally religious Christian family wanting to live their lives off the land as pioneers and spread the gospel through preaching and song. The truth of how they live and what really goes on in their house is far different however. The book is well written and reads very much like a novel. The characters are well developed. And the reader faces the twists and turns that must have surprised and shocked neighbors, friends, acquaintances and opponents.

Watching the Edge of Alaska on Discovery Channel, and they mentioned that McCarthy, Alaska was where this beyond dysfunctional family ended up. Reading the book and watching the show about that particular town was an interesting experience. From his roots in Texas, involvement with familiar names in recent history, and subsequent descent into delusional behavior, Bob Hale, aka Papa Pilgrim is a fascinating character. Unfortunately for his family and anyone involved with him he was a brutal, destructive, manipulative person.Amazing what horrors he performed in the name of his religious beliefs, the stories from his children are mind boggling, the mind control he exercised over them almost beyond belief. The thought that he could prevail over the Park Service and do whatever he wanted to do with the property in McCarthy finally was the beginning of the end of his terrible story. The resolution of his Daughters having the courage to finally break away and eventually tell the story of the atrocities Papa performed on his family, both physically and mentally led to his ending his days in prison. A fitting place for that monster to end his days.

I don't think I have much to add beyond what the other reviewers said, but here's my take. The book tells an interesting tale of a crazed man isolating and abusing his family, stealing, bamboozling a town, destroying property, all the while interpreting the bible to support his actions. There is a huge amount of backstory, some of which was interesting, as in the development of the national parks, and some of which just drags on - and on - and on. The author is very knowledgeable, and includes many, perhaps too many, details. I pushed through, skimmed a lot, getting the "idea" of what was being said, in order to get to whatever the next development was in the actual story of the family. I didn't mind the jumping back and forth in time as other readers did, but did feel the narrative rambled. Of significance perhaps is that, though I almost always highlight something of what I am reading, there was nothing at all that tempted me to so do in this book. I guess it's worth reading, especially if you are familiar with or want to know about the area, or were involved in the "commune" era, or if you are curious about this man and his family, but otherwise there are many more books out there. So, three stars, nothing spectacular, but not a dud, either!

I am fascinated by mountain people and other wilderness types, also by mountain and hillbilly music. But what really hooked me was that the main character in this book is the former husband of John Connally's (Texas Governor, Secretary of the Navy and Treasury, etc...) daughter. Connally's pregnant teenage daughter Kathleen died from a shotgun blast after running off with Robert (Bobby) Hale. Bobby was not indicted, though the death was very suspicious.Bobby later became known as Papa Pilgrim and a few other names. He went through a sixties hippie phase and then found religion (or at least his brand of religion). He said he was destined to father twenty-one children. He fathered four before his religion phase, then fifteen after he went off the grid in New Mexico and Alaskan wilderness mountains. Counting a miscarriage and the child Kathleen Connally was carrying when she died, he reached his goal of twenty-one.Bobby is the son of I. B. Hale, a two time All-American football player for TCU, then first round draft pick for the Redskins. But he put aside football for the FBI, rising to be the head of the Dallas office and friend of J. Edgar Hoover. Bobby was schoolmates with singers John Deutschendorf (Denver), Shawn Phillips, and Delbert McClinton. And oh yes, Lee Harvey Oswald, the guy who shot Bobby's future father-in-law. Bobby and his twin were also later arrested for burglarizing the apartment of Judith Campbell, one of John Kennedy's women friends. The author takes great pains to only report facts he has researched thoroughly. No conspiracy theories here. But this book is not really about that. It focuses on the years the Pilgrims spent in the Alaskan Wilderness in a little almost-ghost town of McCarthy (John Denver filmed a movie there in 1975), and the Pilgrims' fights with the National Park Service. Papa wanted his welfare checks, but no government interference.I was a little put off by the meanderings through time in this book and the frequent flashbacks that seemed to interrupt the story flow. But it's still worth your time.I am also fascinated by narcissists and Pilgrim's tendency to take both sides of the same issue and to use religion to justify evil deeds is a narcissistic trait. The family at one point was on the threshold of hitting it big with their music, but the father's deranged behavior ended that. Robert Pilgrim asked the question that I kept asking as I read, "If my children look good, talk good, are good, well then how did they get to be good, if their father is so evil? Can a thorn bush bear oranges?" [...]

Being born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland myself all three of Tony Macaulay's books gave me almost as many nostalgic flashbacks as they did fits of laughter - and there were many of each. His satirical recollections and hilarious observations as a wee lad from West Belfast during a the worst of The Troubles have a very human element - especially in "All Growed Up" as he becomes an adult and struggles with all of the choices and decisions that entails.Be warned - there are liberal uses of Belfast and Norn Iron exclusive terms and slang so if you are not versed in this very unique way of speaking I would highly recommend keeping Google nearby for reference, so I would.

I thought this one-volume manga sounded interesting and indeed, it is. It is the story of Chii, born male but ultimately made the transition to female. She relates the saga of growing up, dealing with confusion over gender identity, relationships, her family's reactions and what happens when she finds a guy who loves her and even after she tells him her backstory, he still wants to marry her. The chapter of how he went about proposing is funny and endearing. Besides her story, she provides valuable background information on transgender issues in her "Little Explanation" features. The story and art are strong and Chii avoids getting either self-righteous or strident. I suspect some of the more militant transgender activists won't like the book, seeing Chii as someone who won the transgender lottery by having a very supportive family and fiance. However, many will find The Bride Was a Boy to be a book that teaches the reader in the format of a very well-told story.

I loved everything about this manga! The book itself is larger than your typical manga, and the comic is printed on high-quality, heavy-weight paper. The first chapter is full-color and the rest of the book is black-and-white.The story is told in a genuine and optimistic voice, with ample humor. You'll love the banter between "bride-chan" and "husband-kun" and fall completely in love with this real-life couple! Chii's experience was overwhelmingly positive in terms of coming out and making her transition, but she stresses that everyone's experience is different, everyone makes different choices, and that's okay! The book is chock full of everything you can think of relating to gender identity and sexuality, and it's told in an earnest but simple way to make it easy for anyone to understand. Like Alex Gino's "George," the story is informative, honest, and light-hearted, and a book I would love to see kids have access to in public schools. Like the author says, if this kind of information was available when she was a kid, she wouldn't have had to live in confusion and uncertainty for so long. And I loved this quote from the book: "Laws are important, but it's also important to create a society that accepts diversity and different genders."

Thank you Chii for drawing and writing this lovely book, and thank you Seven Seas for your care in publishing this book in North America. Though the book is packed with information and doesn't shy from pointing out some of the complications and problems that trans people have in their lives, its framework is a cute and upbeat story with a happy ending. I for one am very glad that we have finally reached the point in time where not every story about LBGT people is a tale of woe and tragedy. Not that there isn't plenty of woe and tragedy in the world, but let's not always focus on it; happy endings are possible.

Super adorable story of a woman who was born as a man. It goes through how being transgender affected the main character's life, switching back and forth between growing up different and how her relationship with her now-husband developed.

A cute little read. It is light, upbeat, and a nice relatable story for a trans girl such as myself. I hope she makes more manga honestly, id love to read more!

Its nice to have a different trans narrative than the commonly presented one. While presented as funny and heart-warming, it does touch on the challenges of exploring gender identity later in life, coming out to a partner, the legalities in Japan (which are quite different than the US), the complications of whether to share your past with new friends, and starting a family. It's got cute art, it's funny, it has some interesting explanation sections separate from the comic. It's not perfect, but it's important that we have as many trans narratives as possible and this is a unique one.

Recommended to me by an adolescent client who is dealing with gender identity dysmorphia A good resource which discusses psychological and practical aspects of transformation from a boy to a girl by someone who's done it. Writer is Japanese so she presents this with some of that culture's young adult cutesy dependent take on being female, but all-in-all a great therapeutic resource especially for GID kids in their teens.

The Bride Was a Boy is a really charming graphic novel about the author's transition and about the author's relationship leading up to her wedding. There are also a number of insights told outside the narrative as informative snippets that go into LGBT- and trans-related topics and issues, particularly as they exist in Japan. I mostly know about transgender people and the barriers they face in the US, so those asides were really insightful and educational for me. The whole story was very happy and sweetly told.

I bought this for my kids. My oldest is nine and his brother is about to turn eight. At first I thought some of the satire might be a bit over their heads. And in some cases, it is. But overall, they love it. They enjoy the humor and the imagination. They laugh and tell us (their parents) about Calvin's antics over and over. They want to play Calvin Ball and make their own snowman house of horrors.I will say, the Kindle version (Only works in the app or on a fire tablet) is stunning. It is easy to navigate and crystal clear. Very well done. Get this for your kids. Let them read and learn to use their imagination. Put that tablet to good use.

Calvin and Hobbes is one of those stories that latches itself upon the imagination. It goes beyond the wit and appearance of the normal comic strip and projects a level of conscientiousness that hasn't been seen since Bill Watterson discontinued the strip in 1995. As an artist, I would say Watterson has probably done more for the arts than most people realize. The Tenth Anniversary Book certainly contains the high-points of one of the greatest artisans of comics and story-telling of the Twentieth Century. Thank you, Mr. Watterson, for one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever observed.

My 10 and 14 year old sons LOVE reading this and another Calvin and Hobbes book that we have every single night before bed. It is so fun to hear their giggles coming from the other room. I remember reading it when I was their age, so I love seeing the joy of these classic comics being passed on to another generation!

Odds are if you are thinking about buying this book then you are a Calvin and Hobbes already. But for those who have not discovered the joy that is Calvin and Hobbes I would encourage you to pick one of these up and enjoy a work that transcends "the funny papers" and could truly be described as art. These stories and characters offer commentary, insight, wit, and quite often elicit emotion from the reader. They have a depth and soul not found in other comic strips.

I love C&H so no hate there.I bought all three (Essential, Indispensable, and Authoritative) for my Kindle-on-iPad. The strips are clear enough and I do enjoy them, but they do not fill the iPad screen and, amazingly, you CANNOT adjust the reader to eliminate the useless letter-boxing on all four sides. I have at least a one inch border on all four sides of the screen, wasting considerable screen space. As a result, the art and fonts are small and unnecessarily difficult to read.I don't regret my purchase and I do love C&H and having it on my Kindle (iPad). But the porting to Kindle was poorly done and detracts from what should and could have been a 5 star experience.

Seriously - how could you NOT love Calvin & Hobbes. My 7 year old is now reading Calvin & Hobbes, and it's the greatest thing ever. He may not get all the humor, but as a boy who has a beloved monkey he connects with Calvin's attachment with Hobbes on a very personal level. For me it's like going back to my high school and college years and rereading a loved cartoon.

I Have Always ♡LOVE♡ *Calvin And Hobbes....And, This Book Has Alot of *Interesting* Comments from The Cartoonist Who Drew Them. It Does Have "Calvin& Hobbes" Cartoons, too-So, that's Good. It's A Different kind of Book, for Sure. But, Definitely Worth *CHECKING OUT*!!!! :-)

To give this book of wonderful stories of a boy and his stuffed tiger anything less than a 5 would be sacrilegious. Being born in the early 80's I was at a perfect age to go to bed as a young boy reading these great comics. I feel Calvin and Hobbes changed the wayI look at the world, Instead of watching tv all day as a youngster I did the things Calvin did. I dug for treasure in my backyard, I went for wagon rides down steep hills in the woods, I played every day in the snow and made tons of snowmen in front of my dads car.I have come to realize that Calvin and Hobbes is not just a funny comic strip for a quick laugh, its so much more than that. Its looking at the world through different eyes and changing your perspective. Overall Calvin has changed me and I will never be the same.If you have never gone through a Calvin and Hobbes book please do and you will come to love this boy and his tiger.
