Madison and the Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin that a colony should be established in West Africa for repatriated slaves and free Blacks. The book has an interesting story about how an area called Cape Mesurado was acquired and how this became the colony of Liberia. The stories about the formation of Liberia are quite interesting because the nation of Liberia was created from several colonies. The first president of Liberia was Joseph Jenkins Roberts. Numerous boundary issues were overcome before the territory that would make up Liberia was established.The newcomers to Liberia set up a caste system based on the lightness of one skin. The other interesting thing was that the newcomers considered the natives to be unsuitable to become Liberian citizens. The newcomers became the elite of the society. The elites held control until the military coup by Samuel Kenyon. This e-book contains a great deal of information about the founding and political history of Liberia.

Overall, the book is very good for a first time reader on Liberia.

I love reading the history of all kinds (people, places, and things) well now I have found another outlet to get my fill! It is so nice to quickly read about times and people and have all of the important bits right at my fingertips. My thanks to Charles River Editors to publishing all these wonderful books. I like the place where Ozzy indirectly praises Richie Blackmore, by saying that he has preferred hiring some unknown hungry for work guitar players, rather than well known stars with their own ego like (quoting) “some f***ng Richie Blackmore”. I think Richie would be pleased to read this)))) Made me smile! I love both Ozzy and Richie (of course I love Richie more))))One glitch noticed so far: on page 162 under picture it says “Tony Iomy with Clive Burr and Iron Maiden”, as if Ian Paice was not worth mentioning as a separate celebrity. Don’t recall him ever been Iron Maiden. Is it same condescending attitude to drummers that was sadly observed on Bill Ward?? ))

It covers all the lineups of Black Sabbath and the solo projects. This book includes many pictures that I've never seen before.

Great coffee table book. Sits on the table along with the Metallica Master of Puppets book. Whichever band I'm into at the moment gets to be on top.

Really good presentation. The book is big, with lots of pics and really good stories. Believe me for the price...It's a gem for any Black Sabbath fan!

The early years were very interesting. All of the band member changes get a little monotonous. Reading about Ozzy through the years was also interesting. Hope someday he gets to work with Paul McCartney.

This was a very intriguing book. The author's method of discussing the topic is by interviewing the various individuals involved in complexity research. It is sometimes a little difficult to follow because it's difficult to decide who is doing the questioning and who the answering, but once past that, the reader will find that the author follows a very coherent outline of the topic.In general Lewin starts with the inception of the concept by its various originators and the way that they have developed methods (largely computerized programs) to test their hypotheses. He also discusses the difficulty which these individuals met in trying to promote their ideas of complexity, chaos, and self-organizing criticality to the various academic departments to which they were attached. The author interviews a number of the best known scientists for their impressions of the output of the research into complexity. Some meet it with great skepticism while others, though cautious, seem to think that complexity theory has a great deal to say about dynamic complex systems.Those of you unfamiliar with complexity but have read something on chaos theory or self-organizing criticality (particularly Per Bok's how nature works: The Science of Self-Organized Criticality (Copernicus)) will realize that this is simply another component of the dynamic system, another way of putting mathematics and computer generated programs to use in understanding things like evolution of species and ecosystems, of financial, business, and economic systems, and natural physical phenomena, even historic events (such as the abandonment of the Chaco Canyon Pueblo system.I found especially interesting the appendices, particularly that dealing with global economics and business. It was interesting to see what the predictions were and what the author and his sources thought businesses should do to make their particular market share more stable in a world economy that is forever changing not only within a specific region or a specific business type but within an entire suite of interacting businesses world wide.Very worthwhile reading.

The scope of complexity science is vast, encompassing many disciplines. This book focuses on how the new idea of complexity relates to biology by discussing the idea with many leading biologists of the day. Other reviewers were put off by the book's lack of definition of what complexity is, and the lack of resolution as to what terms such as "edge of chaos" mean. But that is exactly the point. These terms do not have clear definition today. Complexity is a very immature field, frequently pursued at the visceral level. It is hard to define what it *is*, but frequently easy to identify it where it exists. I can understand the other reviewers' concerns with the lack of definition, and can only suggest that because of the narrower focus (biology), this is an appropriate second book on complexity.As a second book, narrowly focused on the question of complexity in biology, it is outstanding. Specifically, the question is one of how self-organization (complexity) relates to evolution and what this means for natural selection. Complexity is frequently talked up as the unifier of the sciences. Lewin takes a balanced approach, taking the time to talk to complexity theorists and understand their ideas, then talking to mainstream biologists to see how the ideas relate. His conclusion shows no inherent bias. Where other books on complexity show extreme (perhaps undue) enthusiasm, Roger Lewin's concusion is decidedly "wait and see". I found his insights to be on target and relevant.I mentioned that this is a good second book. For an introduction to complexity, read John Holland's "Hidden Order". For a history of the Santa Fe Institute and some of the personalities there, read Mitchell Waldrop's "Complexity". Either or both of these would serve as an adequate introduction to this book.

I have to admit, I was a little concerned I would be bored when I received this book as a gift. I don't consider myself a traveler, so what does this book have to do with me? Well, I was about to find out!This is not just a book about travel. This book is a lifestyle book. I am using several of the behavioral changes Marcey suggests just in my day to day life. The book is fun and written in a way that it's not pretentious or only for the fanatical health nut. Instead, it is written for any person living a busy, mobile lifestyle that wants to make better choices and live a better life.The book is FILLED with tons of tips to save time in our day to day lives. I can go on and on about all the value I have received and continue to receive from "Beyond Travel: A Road Warriors Survival Guide", but I am going to suggest you just purchase the book and find out for yourself. Great work Marcey Rader!

Marcey is a genius! I read this book in an effort to help my husband (who is a Road Warrior) feel like he has a better handle on his life on the road. He was overweight, stressed out, unproductive and just always feeling like he was a step behind. I can tell you that the tips I uncovered in this book have made a world of difference for him. He's still a work-in-progress, but he already feels so much better. On top of the information in this book being a life-changer for him, Marcey is hilarious and the book is truly an enjoyable read. She has a "voice" that is no-nonsense, yet understanding, and you can tell she's definitely "been there/done that" herself. It's clear that she's walked the walk and has real life, practical, advice to offer the rest of us still trying to figure it out. Well done!

Hands Down the Best Business Book I've read all year!Yes, this is a business book just as the headline reads . . . Beyond Travel. Many of the best takeaways for me in this book cross over from my travel life to my business life and personal life (Or should I just say LIFE!) I would give this book 10 stars if possible. I would say there's more in here about productivity and efficiency than just travel hacks. Everything from how to tame your inbox to stopping the 15 lb creep that happens when you travel. Love Love Loved it and now I know what I'm getting all friends for Christmas! Thank you Marcey Rader!

Marcey’s insight into the productivity, health, and lifestyle challenges of a road warrior coupled with her real-world experience in hurdling those obstacles make Beyond Travel: A Road Warrior’s Survival Guide a must-read for any road warrior. After having finished the book several days ago, I got the best night’s sleep I have had in ages. I wish I had read Marcey’s words 300,000 air miles ago!The book is so easy to read that I was able to complete it on my last cross-country flight. I downloaded it to my Kindle and was engrained before take off. I think the thing that hit me the most was that Marcey uses real examples and stories we can directly relate with: they aren't extreme or exaggerated.

This book is just the kind of motivation I needed to prioritize and refuel my passions. Thanks to Marcey, I'm shifting focus deliberately yet gracefully towards the activities that make my life better, one piece at a time.

Definitely a keeper. This book gave me a ton of truly practical, doable tips and strategies to stay sane and healthy on the road. I'm not a road warrior, but, like many of the clients in this book, my helpful, healthy routines stay at home when I travel. And my biggest takeaway from the book isn't even related to travel--Marcey Rader's tips for changing my relationship with email, especially with my inbox, is life changing. I am implementing them and feeling more empowered as I make progress organizing my inbox. Great tips, regardless of how much you travel!

Interesting aND informative

I first saw Marcey speak at a Project Management International conference, at which she delivered her "Hack the Mobile Lifestyle" workshop. I immediately connected with her message of health, efficiency (vs. being "busy"), and effectiveness. She is truly passionate about empowering people! I bought 2 copies of this book, one for myself and one for a company VP who travels constantly. Some of the takeaways I found valuable include:-Turning off all email notifications so I can process email when I want to, not on other people's schedules (trust me, you will save so much time, feel more creative and calm, and you won't miss anything!)-Keeping a set of "hangry" snacks in my car for the ride home. This has prevented me from eating entire boxes of snacks when I walk in the door after work.-Getting off my high horse about being strictly"Vegan" or "Raw" or "Paleo" and just trusting my own body and actual real food to determine what I need. As a result, I'm gentler with myself AND I'm eating better.Marcey's writing is a blend of tough motivation and real acceptance. I have read so many motivational books, (Eckhart Tolle, The Secret, etc) and this is the first book I've found that blends real world actions for real people with principles of motivation and empowerment. I keep her book in the "next to my bed" collection, and find that I consult it for lots of efficiency and health hacks, not just related to travel. The book is a great blend of practical tips, motivational advice, and meeting you where you are. I highly recommend it not only for travelers, but for ANYONE who wants to make their health, work, exercise, or play truly effective.

easy to read and apply

Applying lean concepts to product development has not been an easy task. Many are striving to follow the Toyota model by adapting the thirteen principles of their product development system. They read books and hire consultants to try and apply what Toyota has done to their product development cycle. Drew Locher's book on Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development shows us another more powerful way, which any company can apply.In Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development, the author teaches us how to apply value stream mapping to the product development process. It is done in a simple and concise manner. He provides a process for creating lean flow through the development process. He describes the method to map the current state development process, allowing all involved to see how their present development process works. While most companies think the next step is to brainstorm improvements, the author provides seven principles or guidelines to follow in order to create a lean future state.The principles taught in this book are not only applied through the use of a case study, the author an abundance of `Lean Notes' throughout the book that share real life applications of the techniques used at real companies.This book calls itself the `How-to Guide for Streamlining Time to Market', and it is that and more. It is a practical guide that provides a process to `lean out' the complex world of product development, one that you can apply to your company, and one that you can teach to your people.

I want to commend the author on both "what" he decided to cover and "how" he chose to introduce critical concepts to understanding and Improving Product Development processes (ie performance). There are many books which discuss the theory and the application of Lean Product Development at Toyota, however this is the first book that avoids the temptation of saying that "Toyota's way is THE way for every situation." Our industry has a myriad of books about 'Lean tools'. What we all realized (in manufacturing) is the notion that it is not in the emulation of Toyota that "Lean" is best applied to an organization or Business Situation. Mr Locher's book introduces a practical approach to identifying those specific aspects of Lean Product Development that one can extract and implement within their processes. Drews message is not one that says you must "abandon" your current processes, nor does it say which tools you must utilize. It is a book that effectively puts into perspective the concepts,tools, theory and practices that comprise effective (and continuously learning) Product Development Value Streams. At the end of the day, it simply is not good enough to do 'stuff' in Product Development that sounds 'lean' (ie copy what everyone thinks Toyota does every time). Where the author is exceptional is how he introduces the concepts, approach and methodology in such a way as to allow the reader to 'see' how different techniques can be used to improve process/project performance (specifically .. Speed to Market, Quality of result, productivity of resources). If one was ever looking for a practical understanding of 3P, QFD, VOC, Obeya, Design for manufacturability, concurrent engineering .. etc the final chapters and the appendix of this book are worth the investment itself. Without question, we all need the theory of 'text books' on Lean Product Development on our shelves. However we also need something (or someone) to serve as a practical guide to help us 'see' how the right concepts, applied in the right areas (processes), looking for the 'right wastes' can be used to improve our performance metrics. This book is a must read....
