I have to admit, I was a little concerned I would be bored when I received this book as a gift. I don't consider myself a traveler, so what does this book have to do with me? Well, I was about to find out!This is not just a book about travel. This book is a lifestyle book. I am using several of the behavioral changes Marcey suggests just in my day to day life. The book is fun and written in a way that it's not pretentious or only for the fanatical health nut. Instead, it is written for any person living a busy, mobile lifestyle that wants to make better choices and live a better life.The book is FILLED with tons of tips to save time in our day to day lives. I can go on and on about all the value I have received and continue to receive from "Beyond Travel: A Road Warriors Survival Guide", but I am going to suggest you just purchase the book and find out for yourself. Great work Marcey Rader!

Marcey is a genius! I read this book in an effort to help my husband (who is a Road Warrior) feel like he has a better handle on his life on the road. He was overweight, stressed out, unproductive and just always feeling like he was a step behind. I can tell you that the tips I uncovered in this book have made a world of difference for him. He's still a work-in-progress, but he already feels so much better. On top of the information in this book being a life-changer for him, Marcey is hilarious and the book is truly an enjoyable read. She has a "voice" that is no-nonsense, yet understanding, and you can tell she's definitely "been there/done that" herself. It's clear that she's walked the walk and has real life, practical, advice to offer the rest of us still trying to figure it out. Well done!

Hands Down the Best Business Book I've read all year!Yes, this is a business book just as the headline reads . . . Beyond Travel. Many of the best takeaways for me in this book cross over from my travel life to my business life and personal life (Or should I just say LIFE!) I would give this book 10 stars if possible. I would say there's more in here about productivity and efficiency than just travel hacks. Everything from how to tame your inbox to stopping the 15 lb creep that happens when you travel. Love Love Loved it and now I know what I'm getting all friends for Christmas! Thank you Marcey Rader!

Marcey’s insight into the productivity, health, and lifestyle challenges of a road warrior coupled with her real-world experience in hurdling those obstacles make Beyond Travel: A Road Warrior’s Survival Guide a must-read for any road warrior. After having finished the book several days ago, I got the best night’s sleep I have had in ages. I wish I had read Marcey’s words 300,000 air miles ago!The book is so easy to read that I was able to complete it on my last cross-country flight. I downloaded it to my Kindle and was engrained before take off. I think the thing that hit me the most was that Marcey uses real examples and stories we can directly relate with: they aren't extreme or exaggerated.

This book is just the kind of motivation I needed to prioritize and refuel my passions. Thanks to Marcey, I'm shifting focus deliberately yet gracefully towards the activities that make my life better, one piece at a time.

Definitely a keeper. This book gave me a ton of truly practical, doable tips and strategies to stay sane and healthy on the road. I'm not a road warrior, but, like many of the clients in this book, my helpful, healthy routines stay at home when I travel. And my biggest takeaway from the book isn't even related to travel--Marcey Rader's tips for changing my relationship with email, especially with my inbox, is life changing. I am implementing them and feeling more empowered as I make progress organizing my inbox. Great tips, regardless of how much you travel!

Interesting aND informative

I first saw Marcey speak at a Project Management International conference, at which she delivered her "Hack the Mobile Lifestyle" workshop. I immediately connected with her message of health, efficiency (vs. being "busy"), and effectiveness. She is truly passionate about empowering people! I bought 2 copies of this book, one for myself and one for a company VP who travels constantly. Some of the takeaways I found valuable include:-Turning off all email notifications so I can process email when I want to, not on other people's schedules (trust me, you will save so much time, feel more creative and calm, and you won't miss anything!)-Keeping a set of "hangry" snacks in my car for the ride home. This has prevented me from eating entire boxes of snacks when I walk in the door after work.-Getting off my high horse about being strictly"Vegan" or "Raw" or "Paleo" and just trusting my own body and actual real food to determine what I need. As a result, I'm gentler with myself AND I'm eating better.Marcey's writing is a blend of tough motivation and real acceptance. I have read so many motivational books, (Eckhart Tolle, The Secret, etc) and this is the first book I've found that blends real world actions for real people with principles of motivation and empowerment. I keep her book in the "next to my bed" collection, and find that I consult it for lots of efficiency and health hacks, not just related to travel. The book is a great blend of practical tips, motivational advice, and meeting you where you are. I highly recommend it not only for travelers, but for ANYONE who wants to make their health, work, exercise, or play truly effective.

easy to read and apply

Applying lean concepts to product development has not been an easy task. Many are striving to follow the Toyota model by adapting the thirteen principles of their product development system. They read books and hire consultants to try and apply what Toyota has done to their product development cycle. Drew Locher's book on Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development shows us another more powerful way, which any company can apply.In Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development, the author teaches us how to apply value stream mapping to the product development process. It is done in a simple and concise manner. He provides a process for creating lean flow through the development process. He describes the method to map the current state development process, allowing all involved to see how their present development process works. While most companies think the next step is to brainstorm improvements, the author provides seven principles or guidelines to follow in order to create a lean future state.The principles taught in this book are not only applied through the use of a case study, the author an abundance of `Lean Notes' throughout the book that share real life applications of the techniques used at real companies.This book calls itself the `How-to Guide for Streamlining Time to Market', and it is that and more. It is a practical guide that provides a process to `lean out' the complex world of product development, one that you can apply to your company, and one that you can teach to your people.

I want to commend the author on both "what" he decided to cover and "how" he chose to introduce critical concepts to understanding and Improving Product Development processes (ie performance). There are many books which discuss the theory and the application of Lean Product Development at Toyota, however this is the first book that avoids the temptation of saying that "Toyota's way is THE way for every situation." Our industry has a myriad of books about 'Lean tools'. What we all realized (in manufacturing) is the notion that it is not in the emulation of Toyota that "Lean" is best applied to an organization or Business Situation. Mr Locher's book introduces a practical approach to identifying those specific aspects of Lean Product Development that one can extract and implement within their processes. Drews message is not one that says you must "abandon" your current processes, nor does it say which tools you must utilize. It is a book that effectively puts into perspective the concepts,tools, theory and practices that comprise effective (and continuously learning) Product Development Value Streams. At the end of the day, it simply is not good enough to do 'stuff' in Product Development that sounds 'lean' (ie copy what everyone thinks Toyota does every time). Where the author is exceptional is how he introduces the concepts, approach and methodology in such a way as to allow the reader to 'see' how different techniques can be used to improve process/project performance (specifically .. Speed to Market, Quality of result, productivity of resources). If one was ever looking for a practical understanding of 3P, QFD, VOC, Obeya, Design for manufacturability, concurrent engineering .. etc the final chapters and the appendix of this book are worth the investment itself. Without question, we all need the theory of 'text books' on Lean Product Development on our shelves. However we also need something (or someone) to serve as a practical guide to help us 'see' how the right concepts, applied in the right areas (processes), looking for the 'right wastes' can be used to improve our performance metrics. This book is a must read....

Don't waste you time, energy and money on this book.Here is what it is about:Chapter 2 is entitled "Introducing the Hybrid Paradigm and the Historical Analogy." The author does not describe what his hybrid paradigm is. He just says that it will guarantee certain procedural rights (p. 9) and then lists 10 assumptions on which the hybrid paradigm relies. Right after that he jumps to "practical advantages" and again, without serious discussion of what is "practical" about his paradigm, he just says that it will guarantee 5th and 14th Amendment rights. The rest of Chapter 2 is about Bush's response to 9/11 attacks. He ends Chapter 2 with "Possible solution" that ends with "the hybrid paradigm [...] offers a viable solution for lawful coercive interrogation." Thus, this chapter talks a lot from there and here but not about "introducing the hybrid paradigm." Well, you want to believe that it was just an introduction and thus the author was speaking in very general terms and the substance will follow. OK, let's have a look at Chapter 3.Chapter 3 is entitled "Application of the Hybrid Paradigm." How can we speak of "application" if we don't know yet what it is? Instead of clarifying what the hybrid paradigm is and how it can be applied to suspected terrorists, the author relates his "hybrid paradigm" to the legal regime employed by Israel. The rest of the Chapter 3 is about Israeli legal regime employed in Occupied Territories and it again ends with open-ended questions like "what contribution does the hybrid paradigm make to the interrogation of a detainee suspected of involvement in terrorist activity" or "Will individuals detained in Guantanamo Bay be granted Miranda rights prior to their interrogations?" Well, one would ask "Wasn't the Chapter about `application of the hybrid paradigm'?" If yes, then why not to address the issue in the same chapter?! I understand that comparative approach is important and thus looking at how Israeli legal regime works with regard to suspected terrorists may shed some light to the authors "hybrid paradigm." But what the reader looks for in the book is the answer to questions of what the author's hybrid paradigm is and how it will be applied.Chapter 4 jumps to "Interrogations in the History of American Criminal Law." Without any serious scholarly discussion, the author just describes what Bram v. United States, Brown v. Mississippi, White v. Texas, Ward v. Texas, and Ashcraft v. Texas are in about 8 pages.Chapter 6 is "Coercive Interrogation, Threats and Cumulative Mistreatment." He starts with denouncing torture and stating that coercive interrogation is not "torture lite." Then the author tells us what he thinks lawful coercive interrogation methods are and lists 5 of them: sleep deprivation, modulation of room temperature, stress position, placing a sack over the head and playing loud, cacophonous music. Guiora further states that these methods shall be used in a "highly controlled environment [...] that although causing detainees discomfort, does not cause them severe mental and physical pain." But he fails to articulate what "highly controlled environment" is and how does it ensure that a "lawful" coercive interrogation will not turn into pure medieval torture. He further fails to demonstrate why he is sure that those 5 methods do not cause severe mental and physical pain.Chapter 9 is "International Law Pertaining to Torture and Interrogation." This Chapter is just off topic. It is largely about modern international law's self-defense theory. He talks about Caroline case, Nicaragua v. United States, Israel's illegal attack on Osarik station in Iraq, Art. 51 of the UN Charter. Then, finally, he asks the question "what does all this tell us in the context of torture, coercive interrogation and international law?" Yet again, he does not engage into any discussion how self-defense relates to torture and interrogation.To sum up, the book is very general. A 162-page book does not contain any scholarly discussion on coercive interrogation: its legality, justification, circumstances, etc. Do not recommend to read even for the purposes of getting general idea about torture, CID, coercive interrogations, preventive vs. deterrent state paradigms, etc.

Very well written, entertaining book but it is more of a people and events book I've met/participated in than an autobiography. Jim literally does not say much about his life before The Stray Cats, doesn't go into that much detail about The Stray Cats, etc.

Slim tells some great stories, and name drops a lot. He doesn't really talk about the inner workings of the Stray Cats though. He refers to his band mates as "the other two". You will be disappointed if you buy the book hoping for behind the scenes skinny with Brian and Lee. Otherwise, interesting read. Affirms his commitment to the rockabilly scene. Really likes to emphasize his role in that musical genre's history.

The Stray Cats had the guts to leave their comfortable but limiting Long Island home and fly to London where the action was happening with no guarantee of their next meal, let alone commercial success. Jim details his achievements and disappointments along the way, with a lot of reflections of what was and what might have been.

It was an ok read but as a lifelong fan of Stray Cats it really didn’t offer much information. More like I know a lot of famous people.Jim comes off like a good guy but just not really what I was expecting.

Excellent book that Slim Jim Phantom wrote. He goes into great detail about everything. Especially the LA Club scene. I wish there was more pictures in the book during his days in the Stray Cats. A must for any SJP fan & Stray Cats fans too.

Been wanting to read this book for awhile about my favorite Stray Cat! Nice looking book and shipping was fast as well!

About the Author

A native of Southeastern Kentucky, Julia Watts has written thirteen novels for adults and young adults, most of which explore the lives of LGBT people in rural and smalltown Appalachia. Her novel Finding H.F. won the 2002 Lambda Literary Award in the Children’s/Young Adult category. A novel for adults, The Kind of Girl I Am, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in the Women’s Fiction category, and her 2013 young adult novel Secret City was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award and a winner of a Golden Crown Literary Award. Julia’s other titles include Gifted and Talented; Hypnotizing Chickens; and most recently, Rufus + Syd, co written with Robin Lippincott. Julia holds an MFA in Writing from Spalding University and has spoken at various national and regional conferences, including the AWP Conference, the NCTE Conference, the Appalachian Studies Association Conference, and the Denham Symposium on Appalachian Literature. She teaches at South College and in Murray State University’s low-residency MFA in Writing program. She was recently inducted into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame. The kids (the girls in particular) have little contact with the outside world, and their everyday lives are strictly regulated. Life in Knoxville was wearing them all down, so they traded it in for a simpler existence in the country. Todd traded in his nursing job for one at the department of health, and Jen homeschools the kids and does some weaving on the side.The Hazletts might define Zo as an uppity young heathen woman, but Zo’s gender identity is more complicated than all that: she’s gender fluid.“Being a lesbian was really important to Hadley, and she wanted me to say I was one, too. But if I said I was a lesbian, I’d be saying I was a 100 percent girl who only liked other 100 percent girls, and I couldn’t say that. Sometimes I feel like a boy in lipstick. Even the women find companionship and understanding in their unlikely friendship. At first, Mr. Hazlett allows limited socialization, viewing it as a means to an end: namely, converting the sinners next door. But when an ice cream social goes sideways, he forbids his family from having anything to do with them. But teens are gonna teen, am I right?I thought I’d like QUIVER – I have a strange can’t-look-away, car-accident fascination for the Quiverfull movement – but it’s even better than I expected. Libby and Zo are complex, compelling protagonists; no surprise there. But Becky has great backstory that’s equal amounts engaging and depressingly predictable. (Just look at the Jonestown recruits.) Jen and Todd are both awesome too; how could you not love a dad who describes himself as a “feminist vegetarian atheist socialist who votes for Democrats because that’s the best you can hope for in this country” and “believe[s] in labor unions, gun control, LGBTQIA equality, contraception, and separation of church and state.” Like I said, adopt me please!The story is told from the alternating perspectives of each girl; given their radically different worldviews (or indoctrination, in Libby’s case), it’s really neat to read such different accounts of the same event. Watts paints each girl with depth and nuance, which is no small feat in Libby’s case – she could all too easily become a caricature. Tattletale/Little Miss Perfect Patience kind of skirts that line, but I feel like the ending really speaks to the complete and utter indoctrination she’s experienced. I felt rather bad for her by the last page. Again, no small feat, since she acts like such a terrible sister/daughter/Sister throughout the book.As someone who’s been on the atheist/Zo side of the friendship equation, there was actually quite a bit to which I could relate here. Additionally, the idea of showing civility towards uncivil people – people who would kidnap migrant children and keep them in cages, for example – is especially relevant now. (As I write this, it is the last day of June, and #KeepFamiliesTogether protests are happening around the world.) Regarding the ‘rents, most of whom were trying to “be civil” for the sake of their kids’ friendships, should one really smile and nod when a Mr. Hazlett tells your wife to shut up because women aren’t allowed to have opinions? Should you smile and nod even if it’s his own wife he’s talking to?In sum, QUIVER is entertaining and engaging and even kind of fun, between the depressing and infuriating bits. Most of all, it’s hecka relevant today, which is perhaps the most depressing and infuriating thing of all.That said, I really wish the Forresters had adopted their bunnies instead of buying them from a breeder. Not cool, guys. Also Daiya cheese exists and it is AWESOME. You can even make your own vegan mozzarella nowadays, Jen. Please allow me to recommend THE CHEESY VEGAN by John Schlimm.

A fundamentalist family with 6 children and one on the way- the family ascribes to the Quiverfull ideology which eschews birth control-has new neighbors. A worldly family of four with a gender-fluid daughter, Zo, the same age as fundamentalist Lib, the oldest daughter. Lib knows that their lifestyle is condemned, but she observes that the family is loving and works for charity, all without being her father's kind of Christian. Although she is generally content with her own lifestyle, if only her father would let her ask more questions, she can see that Zo and her family don't act wicked or unhappy. Zo becomes her best friend, before the inevitable blow out between the families that have such opposite values.One thing I like is that both families are described as loving and content with their lifestyles, yet each has to deal with conflicts and downsides. Lib's mother also questions patriarchical decisions and is frank with her about the sacrifices their lifestyle requires. The crisis in the story might well have been avoided if her father had a bit more flexibility. The difference between the attitudes of the families on punishment is illuminating. But no one is just a caricature.

The beautifully-crafted YA novel “Quiver” by Julia Watts is a masterful parable about what happens when conviction edges over into fanaticism. As the jacket summary explains, the Hazlett family is eking out a living in rural Eastern Tennessee as devotees of the ultra-fundamentalist “Quiverfull Movement”. When the story begins, the Forrester family has just moved in next door. Zo Forrester, a gender-fluid teen presenting mostly as female, and Libby, the eldest of the (currently) six Hazlett children, begin to form a friendship, and Zo’s younger brother Owen is thrilled to play with the four youngest Hazlett kids..The narrative is well-balanced and sensitive. At the beginning, the positive aspects of the Hazlett perspective are well-drawn. Becky Hazlett, the mother, seems to be doing a loving job of organizing her home-schooled brood of four girls and two boys, managing well on the sparse income from her husband’s pest control business. Similarly, the Forresters are understandable, being ecologically-minded vegetarians who are also homeschooling Zo and Owen. However, inevitably, the free-thinking Mr. Forrester locks horns with the patriarchal Mr. Hazlett, who forbids his children to associate with the “heathens” next door. When Libby sneaks out for a midnight rendezvous with Zo, the vicious punishment she receives exposes her father’s fanaticism in stark terms, and things just get worse from there.As I’ve said in previous reviews, it is quite obvious that the YA genre is a very up-and-coming addition to literature. This book, like a number of others I have reviewed recently, deals honestly with the issues and crises of our current culture, and provides a very welcome examination of the taboos and myths that have plagued humankind for millennia. Although it is clear where Julia Watts stands philosophically, she presents her point of view via characters who are well-drawn and definitely not stereotyped. This is certainly a book worth reading.

This book has only a few pictures and very little diagrams. Its a good book for a teenager not for a kid.

Good book!

This is just what we needed as the perfect gift for a grandson who has recently started playing LaCrosse.He was pleased to receive it.

I had signed up for an online course in coaching lacrosse and this was the textbook that was offered. Unfortunately, the family did some housecleaning and the original text was thrown out! After careful searching, I found this replacement text online. It is the exact same one! Good book (I previously, years ago, had bought one Sports Illustrated had created on basketball when I was thrown into a situation of coaching that sport as a first year teacher-and I was a wrestler by trade). The basketball book allowed me to finish .500 with a mismatch group of kids.

Godson is loving the book!

If it is in coach Danowiski's library it has to be a worthwhile addition to mine. Every lax coach can benefit from reading and referring to it

Good sound advice for the novice to intermediate player. Would recommend if you can get it for a good price

I gave this as a gift to my cousin who was starting out in high school Lacrosse. I wanted to pick something that wasn't too basic, and this book had some good details on some basics but also strategy and drills.
