This is a lovely book of designs which are based on the art and culture of Japan. When I was growing up, my best friend Jean was a first generation Japanese American and I spent many hours at her house learning about Japan from her mother and lovely grandmother. Our cultures were very different as my father was Greek and my mother was from the hills of North Carolina. Her home was a true haven for me from our rambunctious family of seven home. Jean's grandmother didn't speak a word of English but was able to teach me much about Japanese art, most especially watercolor and origami.That I am now a needlework designer certainly dates back to those early art lessons. Jean's parents were very modern but Grandmother was very traditional and the house was filled with gorgeous artwork that this book reminds me of so much. Coloring in it will be both an homage to the gracious woman who was willing to spend a lot of time teaching a wild and tomboyish young girl lessons in art and manners as well as a way for me to travel back to those days in my mind.This is a smaller format book of 72 pages of designs in only 7 x 7 inches. The binding is a type of rubbery glue that is located at the top of the book. It makes getting to all sides of the design much easier and now that I have experienced it, I wish more coloring books had top binding (as do many art books). My only concern is that if I remove a page, it may "break" the binding at that point and take more than the one page off. The back of the book is a heavy cardboard that keeps the book stable, especially if you are working in-hand instead of on a hard surface.The designs are printed on the front side of each bright white medium weight page with the backside blank. The designs range from open fairly easy to color to much more detailed and a bit more challenging. This is exactly the type of mix that I hope for in buying a new book as I can choose the right design for the mood and needs of my day.My pencils and gel pens are working great with the paper but I will use a backing piece of freezer paper or cardstock if I decide to use markers or watercolors as they may leach through the back of the page.I have purchased the three books available from this publisher (who is new to me.) The books are about Japan, India, and Butterflies. I like them all so well, I will certainly be buying more from this company in the future.

I couldn't help it. I had to order this book when it came up for pre-order. I love Japanese art!I also couldn't stand it when I received it. I HAD to put my pens to work. If you color regularly, you KNOW what I am talking about.I would like to note: Please choose fine line art pens or markers for this book. The lines are very tiny in places and anything larger could get frustrating.Also of note: This book is top-bound, glued, like a neat'book design. Aka: The page comes off the glue binding, potentially taking others with it. This is why I have decided to discipline myself to take this book in order, against my usual. I took a picture to try and show what I mean.I have also added some photos of the product, both colorized and not. Very exciting book.

I'm so glad that I pre-ordered this one! Not only is the paper quality excellent, but the images are printed on only one side of each page! Hooray! I love the size of the pages as well, a frameable 6x6", (slightly larger actually, but I would frame them that size), which means you're done coloring the page before you're tired of it.The variety of images is surprising, considering the price. There is a variety of scale and subject matter, from cherry blossoms to koi, abstract porcelain patterns, fans, dragons, cranes, bonsai trees, and more. The ink is a light grey, which should virtually disappear even when using light colors.The paper looks dense enough to handle markers, but I doubt if water colors would be a good choice. I'll be using colored pencils and pens. I recommend this book for most ages.

Very nice coloring book which I like much better than the artist's "Butterflies" book. The pages are more completely filled with images to color. There are cherry blossoms, fans, koi, bamboo, buildings, bonsai trees, cranes, phoenix, geisha heads, fabric designs, lanterns. Some are easy, most are average adult coloring level, a few have very tiny coloring areas and will require fine line marker (like Stabilo 88) or extremely sharp pencils.

This coloring book is not what I expected. The pages are very small and what you are given is really small portions of a larger page.It's almost impossible to color the pages in the book.......I've taken several out in order to color them other you are coloring on a bump of the pages under what you are trying to color. Wanted regular size pages to color. Don't remember if there was any size mentioned when I purchased this book. Will purchase a book with larges pictures to color and not just part of a design.

About the Author

Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. wow this volume was amazing, it's taken me a couple of issues to get used to this new artists style and while i do miss Guy Davis, i feel like this is the first volume where i finally got completely on board with the new artist.i won't spoil any of the story for you just know it's amazing and wraps up some lose ends from the past, and has without question the most BRUTAL fight scene in any hellboy comic

I wish BPRD as a whole would get a bit more, idk, flashy i guess.They have a nice universe but in comparison to Hellboy I never feel like they get any storylines really done.Johann Krauss is my fave so this one did stand out to me, I'm so glad they delve into him more these days

Even though I miss Guy Davis' art - this artist is great and I will make the adjustment I'm sure. All of the Hellboy family of comics are great fun and this collection carries on that tradition.

Mike Mignola has been an "artists' artist" since he first blew everyone away in the mid-late eighties, emerging from behind a Walt Simonson/Jack Kirby fusion with his now unmistakable atmospheric and angular chiaroscuro style. Just as he was becoming one of the biggest names in comics, with books like the 'prestige' format 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight' tailor-made to showcase his brilliance and originality, he decided to jump ship. Leaving superheroes and the 'big two' for the creative freedom of Dark Horse, he joined Frank Miller and John Byrne as part of the 'Legend' imprint of creator-owned titles. When 'Hellboy' debuted, the strength of the art obscured the insecurities Mignola felt as a writer. The first mini-series, 'Seed of Destruction', was scripted by John Byrne, but 'Wake the Devil' saw a rapid development in his abilities as a storyteller, as he broke free of the assembly-line mind-set that reinforces a distinction between writers and artists at Marvel and DC. His honesty and utter lack of pretention has always been admirable, and from the start he explained 'Hellboy' as a vehicle for his obsessions with pulp fiction and gothic horror, with a reckless approach to plotting that was often decided by an urge to draw a giant ape with bolts in its neck (for example).The scope and complexity of the 'Mignolaverse' grew exponentially when the BPRD and Hellboy went their separate ways. John Arcudi took the 'Plague of Frogs' storyline in exciting and always unpredictable directions, and Guy Davis emerged as a singular artistic force, with Eisner awards confirming the critical and popular acclaim he so richly deserved. When Mignola chose Davis as artist on the first 'Plague of Frogs' arc, he was best known for his run on the Vertigo series 'Sandman Mystery Theatre', which was not the best representation of his abilities. Given their seemingly opposing artistic styles, it is a testament to Mignola's judgement that he saw the potential in Davis, who is now considered the most imaginative monster artists ever, perhaps even better than Mignola himself. The Hellboy and BPRD books have become the most reliably entertaining and artistically brilliant titles on the shelf, using a combination of respected veterans and gifted newcomers: Richard Corben, John Severin, Duncan Fegredo, Ryan Sook, Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon, Paul Azaceta, Jason Shawn Alexander, Peter Snejbjerg, Ben Stenbeck, Sebastian & Max Fiumara, Scott Hampton, Kevin Nowlan, Jason Latour... and so on. Pound for pound, Hellboy, BPRD, Abe Sapien, Witchfinder, Baltimore and Lobster Johnson have the best art in mainstream comics.With Volume 4 of the 'Hell on Earth' storyline, the reader gets two entertaining tales, smaller in scope, that serve to develop newer characters and resolve one of the original series best narrative threads. With Guy Davis gone, Mignola's unerring eye for talent is proven once more, with two exceptional new artists who each put their skill to the test on their respective stories. 'The Devil's Engine' is illustrated by Tyler Crook, who has a style similar enough to Guy Davis' pencils and inks to keep the unique look of BPRD intact, but uses a flawless European 'ligne claire' that contrasts with the sketchier, suggestive rendering of his predecessor. 'The Devil's Engine' begins with Agent Devon trying to escort the teenaged danger-detector Fenix back to BPRD headquarters. What promises to be an aggravating train-ride with a hostile girl who may or may not have useful premonitory powers, soon turns into a nightmare. After she freaks out and leaps from the moving train, Devon is forced to follow. She provides all the proof he needs of 'useful abilities' when the train crashes violently into a deep crater, killing the passengers. Their close call provides little relief, however; terrifying Hammerheaded monstrosities force them to seek refuge in an overturned trailer. Their desparate battle for survival makes for an exciting tale, and Crook proves himself to be among the very best artists in comics.Both of the stories in this softcover collection are great, but it is 'The Long Death' that steals the show. Johann heads north to find his former boss, Ben Daimio, whose shocking secret about his mysterious death and rebirth in South America resulted in the massacre of several BPRD agents. It also destroyed the colossal human body that Krauss had been able to inhabit, living once more as a human, instead of a vaporous ectoplasm in a containment suit. When the Jaguar-god that has possessed Daimio faces off against Daryl, the Wendigo, it is one of the best issues of the year. The writing is excellent, but the art of James Harren is truly something special. He renders the violence between two legendary creatures with an exaggerated style that is stunning; this three-issue mini-series put the comic-world on notice -- James Harren is a f***ing superstar. It's a fun read all around, but the art alone is worth the price-tag.

"The Long Death" was definitely my favourite of the two 3-issue stories collected in this volume. Johann leads a team of agents to British Columbia to investigate a spate of bloody killings carried out by a were-jaguar and former BPRD colleague, Daimio. But Johann goes prepared to stop Daimio's bloody rampage once and for all.As good as the story is, the artist James Harren deserves special mention for his outstanding work, drawing what is one of the goriest BPRD stories I've read in a good while. He draws the Wendigo amazingly too, giving him this profound sadness in his silent panels, and the Wendigo's close-up expression on his face before fighting the were-jaguar? Extraordinary. The background art is beautiful too, he really captures the stillness and eeriness of the snowy woods at night perfectly.There is a massive fight between Wendigo and were-jaguar in this story that I didn't expect to be as epic as it was but Harren does a marvellous job with the action. The characters move on the page and I loved how Wendigo's movements seemed believable despite his figure being wholly unreal.Not that "The Devil's Engine" is bad, it just isn't as inspired as "The Long Death". In this one Agent Devon is escorting Fenix and her dog, Bruiser, back to BPRD HQ but finds trouble when their train derails and some kind of spider monsters chase them in the middle of a desert. It's a testament to Mike Mignola and John Arcudi's storytelling abilities that they're able to take 2 characters, Johann Krauss and Agent Devon, who, when the series started out, were solely background characters but are now the leads of a book - and you care about them as much as you would if it were Hellboy and Abe in their roles. Johann especially is becoming more and more likeable.Duncan Fegredo who draws the covers for all the issues has to be mentioned. He is simply the best. Each one of those covers blew me away. He takes Mignola and his team's outlandish monster creations and turns them into things of utter beauty. That first cover of "The Long Death" where Johann is walking in the woods is wonderful as is the cover of the second issue to "The Devil's Engine" with the careening lorry with the monstrosity atop it, and when Dave Stewart's colouring them? Comic book nirvana. I wish these two would draw everything Mignola wrote, they are an unbeatable artistic duo.This is an excellent fourth volume in the "Hell on Earth" series proving that Mignola only gets better with age. I don't know where it's going but Mike Mignola's creating a helluva comics tapestry with all of his books that are swelling literally into the dozens and seem to overlap in the most brilliant ways. I re-read "BPRD, Volume 6: The Universal Machine" recently because I love that book but it turned out to be fortuitous as the Wendigo character in Abe's story from that book reappears for the first time since then in "The Long Death". Also, if you want to get the most out of this story, check out "BPRD, Volume 8: Killing Ground" to find out who this Daimio chap is and how he came to be a were-jaguar. You can still enjoy this book without reading either book but "The Universal Machine" is seriously one of the best books Mignola's ever written so it's well worth checking out. Nobody else is doing monster comics this good - can't wait to read more in this brilliant series!

Very disappointed with this purchase that we look forward to with its special format. We have the collection that is a little bigger and the quality is quite superior. If I could buy again, I would buy only the larger ones, even if they came separately. The leaves, despite being thick cardboard, have been deformed! Even books we have not yet used! Amazingly poor quality !! Very regretful of this purchase. It's a shame to see my 2 year old son worried about his books, which usually takes care of all his books ...

Very cute gift set, however the books are not the same size or thickness as the same titles purchased individually.

I freggin' love... LOVE these books for my kids. They are fun, educational & most importantly, teach them the fundamentals like what superhero has what ability. Seriously, I can't define how cute, simple, and easy to read these are for the little ones. I promise you, if you love DC heroes and you have kids, little ones learning colors, opposites, letters, etc. this set is a must have. I seriously want this set passed down generation to generation, I love it that much.

I purchased these for my daughters birthday gift bags for her classroom party. We decided not to have a huge party at home since her birthday falls on a holiday. I can’t remember an instance where a book for young people has made me contemplate so many large ideas.As an educator, what strikes me most about the writing in this book is the sheer truth of it. The author has managed to present past and present events in a surprisingly honest and informative way, while still writing in child-friendly language.Normally, by the time events make it to history books, they have been homogenized, clarified, watered down, and made insipid enough to cause a superficial understanding of important events. Not so with this book.This book has already opened dialogues and inspired lessons for me and I am very excited to have it as a tool for contemplation and hopefully, change.

My copy of Civil Rights Then & Now arrived and I couldn’t be more thrilled. From individuals to movements of the distant past and present Brooke weaves a well-founded narrative of Civil Rights. I’m grateful for her inclusion of violence against Black Americans. I love the choices for pull quotes and the illustrations are winsome.

Wow! An excellent book for teachers & parents to share with their students & children. This book has so much info starting with abolitionists and reconstructtion to noting current movements and significant people & events. I also love the comprehension and essay questions, the graphic, and timelines.

Wow. This book - every single page - has been an amazing experience.I originally picked this up as a high school student who needed a "pulitzer prize winning non-fiction book" to read as an independent reading assignment. I was expecting myself to get caught in another period of laziness as I always did, where I simply spark-noted or shmooped the book, never gaining the actual experience of it. I was wrong. As soon as I read the first couple of chapters (I always have the intention of reading the full book, but many times I never get around to it) I was captivated, and knew I would read the entire thing. It was horrifying and shocking to me that this book was reporting things that were going on in the United States of America, where I lived. Of course I had heard of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder before, but this gave me another level of insight on not only the people affected by it, but the system which they have to deal with.I remember before reading this book, I would go out and see a homeless person talking to themselves, and I would be legitimately frightened, as it was something of the unknown. What was wrong with them? That was all I could think of. Nowadays in society everyone has this belief that "crazy" people are "crazy" as a result of some traumatic experience of the past, whether it was child abuse, drug abuse, or rape. When parents see a homeless person, they often say "that's what drugs do to you." This book shows how wrong these assumptions can be. Pete Earely has given me so much knowledge on mental health and the mental health system and I truly appreciate it. I have a completely different view of the issues presented in this book now. This is a great read, and everyone should read it. And I promise they won't regret it.

This is one of the best books about BiPolar disorder that I have ever read. It's written by a Journalist who is very aware of the current National crisis of the Mentally Ill filling our jails and prisons instead of getting the care they need.What finally happens in this family's life is that their BiPolar teenage son breaks into a neighbors house to take a bath in their fancy tub and he gets caught by the owners. They press charges- the courtroom scene is so well done. The young Man is almost classified as a felon , but instead is found guilty of 2 misdemeanors. The trial changes his life and his family's too. Dealing with a major Mental illness can be devastating to all involved. This is a powerful book and a great one on that subject.Jo Monday

As the sister of a young man with bipolar, this book allowed me enter his world and truley understand the inner workings of the minds of those who are mentally ill. I honestly could not put this book down, and I recommend it to any and everyone, especially those who have a loved one with a mental illness. This book has been a Bible for me, and I've already given it to my mother to read, my husband will be next. Pete Earley did a fantastic job at portraying the mental health system for what it really is- broken. I faced some hard truths in this book but it only helped me to understand and realize that we can't give up on our loved ones who are ill, regardless of their words or actions.

Author Peter Earley's book "Crazy" tells two stories--that of his son, Mike, who had a bipolar episode in college and was arrested for breaking into a private home and damaging it, and that of his year-long investigation inside the Miami-Dade County jail in Miami.Earley uses his personal experience with his son and the experiences of those in the Miami-Dade County jail to illustrate how frustrating and idiotic the mental health laws are. He writes that the mentally ill used to be treated in state hospitals; now they are being arrested and the jails and prisons are the new asylums. Today, fewer than 55,000 of the mentally ill are treated in state hospitals. This is one-tenth the number treated in state hospitals in 1955.Earley says the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill was an unplanned social disaster. He writes, "Deinstitutionalization was a cruel hoax and the wholesale closings of state hospitals was abandonment, not freedom, for the chronically mentally ill."An emergency room doctor at the Virginia hospital where Earley's son was taken said he couldn't treat him because he had not harmed himself or others. And, the irony of the law is that someone who has been determined to be delusional and psychotic must give their consent to be treated. As the doctor said, "It's not against the law to be crazy." Yet, if a physician didn't treat a patient with obvious physical injuries, the physician would be accused of negligence and cruelty. Early frustrations and helplessness as a parent of a mentally ill child mirrored that of thousands of others.Earley says most of the mentally ill had no concept of what they were doing when they committed crimes. It's in society's best interest to help them get treatment, not lock them in jail.Earley spends a lot of time addressing the issue of the civil rights of the mentally ill. Although 80 percent of the mentally ill can be helped with antipsychotic medications, civil rights laws are used to prevent patients from receiving help. The current system is heavily biased against intervention and treatment. As a result, many of the mentally ill live on the streets like animals.Yet, as one physician said, "I've never had one person whom I had helped say to me, 'Doc, I wish you had left me crazy on the streets."Earley's profiles of several mentally ill people who were in the Miami-Dade County jail are disturbing and frustrating. While his son had a positive outcome, the same can't be said for others.This is the type of book that will stick with you a while, particularly if you have a friend or family member who has a mental illness. The way we treat mental illness in the United States is a disgrace. This book should be required reading for all politicians and legislators.
