I read this as I prepared for a job interview at the New York Power Authority. I had no idea that history would be completely fascinating and involve a number of historically significant people like: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth and Robert Moses! I got the job and am thinking that some of my friends and relatives might enjoy this book. It provides great background for clean energy, smart grid, climate change and the politics of energy discussions!

Great Author, really does his research. :) KML

The history of electricity in New York State is really not in the daily public sphere of thought, so long as we have power and its affordable. But this book offered a really interesting and important history on how we get power and why we get it from where we do. I liked the angle the author took, which dove into the personalities of the key players who worked to build the New York Power Authority into what it is today. It is also very well-researched, citing documents and quotes from a very wide range of sources, which allows the reader to get a good sense of what the social and political landscape was like at the time.

Who knew public power had such history? Rock Brynner spent two years researching and writing this fact-packed narrative about the importance of public power in the development of New York State. Anyone interested in where the state’s public resources came from, how inventors like Edison and Tesla fit into the picture, and the role of key figures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and master builder Robert Moses will appreciate Brynner’s work. Given that the New York Power Authority isn’t a very well-known entity, this book also takes a good look at the utility’s role in generating clean hydropower and leading the development of an industry that launched technological change across the nation.

Review

"Fascinating and deeply felt." -The New York Times Book Review“Forceful and eloquent on the history of her native country, Gessen is alarming and pessimistic about its future as it doubles down on totalitarianism.” -Los Angeles Times“A remarkable portrait of an ever-shifting era…Gessen weaves her characters’ stories into a seamless, poignant whole. Her analysis of Putin’s malevolent administration is just as effective…a harrowing, compassionate and important book.” -San Francisco Chronicle“Ambitious, timely, insightful and unsparing … By far Gessen’s best book, a sweeping intellectual history of Russia over the past four decades, told through a Tolstoyan gallery of characters. … What makes the book so worthwhile … are its keen observations about Russia from the point of view of those experiencing its return to a heavy-handed state. It helps that Gessen is a participant, and not just an observer, able to translate that world adeptly for Western readers. … You feel right there on the streets.” -Washington Post“[R]eads almost like a Tolstoy novel...Gessen outlines the failure of Russia's reform with precision and humanity, thoroughly explaining the strength of an authoritarian government's hold on its citizens' psyche. It's not just history; it is an urgent awakening.” –Buzzfeed“[Gessen’s] essential reportage traces her homeland’s political devolution through the dramatic real stories of four citizens who now face ‘a new set of impossible choices.’” –O Magazine“Current events, ongoing, recognizable, and important to realize.” – Tom Hanks“Remarkable…Gessen’s deft blending of…stories gives us a fresh view of recent Russian history with from within, as it was experienced at the time by its people. It is a welcome perspective.” –New York Review of Books“Excellent…Gessen’s cast of characters tell a powerful story of their own, giving us an intimate look into the minds of a group crucial to understanding the country’s brief experience of democracy and of the authoritarian regime that follows.” –New Republic  “One of Putin’s most fearless and dogged critics tracks the devastating descent of post-Soviet Russia into authoritarianism and kleptocracy through the lives of four disillusioned citizens.”  –Esquire“One of our most urgent and iconoclastic journalists...few...are better placed to understand the parallels between the two egomaniacs who now dominate world affairs.” –Out Magazine“Starting with the decline, if not the disintegration, of the Soviet regime, Masha Gessen’s The Future is History tracks totalitarianism through the lens of generation raised in post-Communist Russia.” -Vanity Fair, "Hot Type"“Gessen, the sterling Russian-American journalist and activist, has been outspoken in recent press articles about the threat of totalitarianism in America. But in her latest book, Future Is History, she never mentions America’s problems. Here, instead, she examines what is wrong in her native country and lets readers, wide-eyed, draw the parallels." -Christian Science Monitor“Brilliant and sobering…writing in fluent English, with formidable powers of synthesis and a mordant wit, Gessen follows the misfortunes of four Russians who have lived most of their lives under Putin…Gessen vividly chronicles the story of a mortal struggle.” -Newsday“Gessen is an exemplary journalist who knows when to sit back and let facts speak for themselves…[and] The Future Is History just might be the culmination of [her] life’s work... If you’ve been confused by all the talk about “Russia stuff,” this might be the most important book you’ll read all year.” –Seattle Times   “Impressive...The Future Is History warns us of what will become of the United States if we don’t push against our burgeoning authoritarian government and fight for democracy…A chilling read, but a necessary one.” –Bitch Media “A lively and intimate narrative of the USSR’s collapse and its aftershocks, through the eyes of seven individuals… A gifted writer, Gessen is at her best when she’s recounting her characters’ experiences.” -Bookforum“A thoroughly-reported history of a dismal sequence of events with a strong, engaging narrative and central set of characters.” –Forward“A brave and eloquent critic of the Putin regime … For anyone wondering how Russia ended up in the hands of Putin and his friends, and what it means for the rest of us, Gessen’s book give an alarming and convincing picture.” –The Times   “Gessen makes a powerful case, arguing that Putin reconstituted the political and terror apparatus of the Soviet state and that ideology was the last block to fall into place.”  –Financial Times“Russia is more at the forefront of our minds now than it’s been in all the time since the Cold War, and who better to enlighten us on the evolution of this complicated nation than journalist and Putin biographer Masha Gessen? Through her profiles of various Russians including four born in the 1980s, Gessen crafts a narrative that deciphers the Soviet Union’s move toward – and retreat from – democracy.” -Signature Reads"A devastating, timely, and necessary reminder of the fragility and preciousness of all institutions of freedom." -Booklist (starred)"Brilliant...A worthwhile read that describes how Putin’s powerful grip on Russia developed, offering a dire warning of how other nations could fall under a similar spell of state control." -Library Journal"An intimate look at Russia in the post-Soviet period, when the public’s hopes for democracy devolved within a restricted society characterized by “a constant state of low-level dread"...a well-crafted, inventive narrative." -Publisher's Weekly“Masha Gessen is humbly erudite, deftly unconventional, and courageously honest.  At this particular historical moment, when we must understand Russia to understand ourselves, we are all very lucky to have her." - Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny”A fine example of journalism approximating art. Necessary reading for anyone trying to understand the earthshaking events of our time: how in one country after another individual aspirations for wealth and power mutated into collective cravings for strongmen.” - Pankaj Mishra, author of An End to Suffering and Age of Anger   ‘The Future is History is a beautifully-written, sensitively-argued and cleverly-structured journey through Russia's failure to build democracy. The difficulty for any book about Russia is how to make the world’s biggest country human-sized, and she succeeds by building her story around the lives of a half-dozen people, whose fortunes wax and wane as the country opens up, then closes down once more. It is a story about hope and despair, trauma and treatment, ideals and betrayal, and above all about love and cynicism. If you want to truly understand why Vladimir Putin has been able to so dominate his country, this book will help you.’- Oliver Bullough, author of Let Our Fame Be Great and The Last Man in Russia  Praise for The Man Without A Face:“Gessen has shown remarkable courage . . . [An] unflinching indictment of the most powerful man in Russia.” —The Wall Street Journal “[Gessen] shines a piercing light into every dark corner of Putin’s story. . . . Fascinating, hard-hitting reading.” —Foreign Affairs “Absorbing.” —The New Yorker “Powerful and gracefully written.” —San Francisco Chronicle

I enjoyed reading this book if you can apply world "enjoy" in the case study of totalitarian goverment. This book is very well written. I love the masterful combination of personal stories and socio-political framing. I grew up in USSR and moved to US in early 90s and this book spoke to me. The author does excellent job portraying Soviet and post Soviet world and people in all of it sad and at times gruesome glory.I think for many readers this book will provide deep understanding of why Russia is what it is now and why Putin is is popular. It is also a lesson to all of us on how democracy can slip right thought our fingers.

When I looked up “The Future Is History” on Amazon and saw the 1-star reviews left by obvious trolls, I just *knew* this book had to be dangerously good. So I bought it immediately. I had read several of Gessen's meticulous and eye-opening New Yorker pieces, but this book takes it to a whole new level.Gessen tells the story through seven dramatis personae, each “both ‘regular’, in that their experiences exemplified the experiences of millions of others, and extraordinary: intelligent, passionate, introspective, able to tell their stories vividly.” They give first-person accounts of the everyday ordeal of surviving true to oneself in Russia. Like Zhanna, daughter of popular opposition politician Boris Nemtsov and activist in her own right, whose life demonstrates some of the consequences of opposing the regime -- like exile, incarceration and murder. The story of Masha the journalist illustrates the perils of truthtelling. Pioneering psychotherapist Marina Arutyunyan tries to shepherd modern mental health to Russia through lacerating thickets of state-mandated ideology. Openly gay Lyosha tries to advocate for oppressed minorities without getting fired from his precarious university post.Through the lives of the protagonists, Gessen weaves the last century of Russian history. Stalin’s self-cannibalizing reign of terror is particularly chilling: “Stalin’s terror machine executed its executioners at regular intervals. In 1938 alone, forty-two thousand investigators who had taken part in the great industrial-scale purges were executed, as was the chief of the secret police, Nikolai Yezhov.” Stalin once invited an old friend from Georgia to Moscow for a reunion, and after lavishly wining and dining him, had him executed before dawn: “This could not be explained with any words or ideas available to man.”And that is the most astonishing aspect of this book: it is not fiction. The protagonists’ experiences are so logic-defying, so disheartening, and such violations of basic human decency as to exist in a separate universe that no novelist could concoct. And yet, this universe has an internal logic. Perhaps it's best explained through Hannah Arendt, whose three-volume “Origins of Totalitarianism” Gessen deftly scrunches down to a few essential paragraphs: “What distinguishes a totalitarian ideology is its utterly insular quality. It purports to explain the entire world and everything in it. There is no gap between totalitarian ideology and reality because totalitarian ideology contains all of reality within itself.”And yet, the book reads like a novel, which is why I don’t want to give away too much. Who is Homo sovieticus? For whom do Russians vote in the “Greatest Russian Ever” (aka “Name of Russia”) contest year after year? What’s going to happen to Boris Nemtsov after he defies Putin? Do our heroes avoid getting beat up and arrested at the demonstrations? Why is Putin so popular in Russia? One pervasive theme of the book is the hegemony of doublethink over the Russian psyche. Coined by Orwell in “1984”, doublethink is the necessity of maintaining two contradictory beliefs for survival, e.g. publicly supporting the government ideology while knowing that it oppresses your very existence. This is some crazy-making stuff that Russians seem to have been put through for over a century. And yet, there are still people who fight for truth, healing, and freedom. Over and over, they rise to attend banned protests very likely to land them in jail (or worse). Their stories of stupendous bravery and selflessness consistently inspire. And lest you as a Westerner think that you’re somehow safe because, oh, this is something happening elsewhere, please note that the recent rise of authoritarianism in countries like America takes its playbook straight out of Russia. Attacks on the press, construction of alternate realities, propagation of fake news, persecution of minorities, and the shameless grabbing of executive power: it’s all happening right now.And you know what else? We’ve seen it all before: Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao. So don’t read this book just because it’s a riveting account of life in what’s still an undiscovered continent for most Westerners. Don’t read it just because it’s a tour de force of journalistic craft and bravery. Read it because it also informs your life as an American, German, Frenchman, Hungarian, or anyone who values the freedom of human life and ideas. Read it so that you may be impelled to take action.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., author & public speaking trainerPS: Congratulations to Masha Gessen for winning the National Book Award. Thoroughly deserved.

It’s a terrifying and essential book - even if you already know the story or parts of it - because it reads like a funerary oration for one's country. It acknowledges the late-Soviet and post-Soviet Russia’s life and struggle, and then ends with a nearly uniform conclusion from all of its subjects - “there is no future”, and with their attempts (successful or not) to escape or shield themselves from the growing totalitarian haze. The Future is History does a very important thing - it tells people's stories. Gessen has the clear-cut eloquence to preserve those stories' voice and weave them into a larger political narrative. I appreciate the focus on people's perception of themselves within the country, and on the shaping of their memories - and the bold incorporation of trauma frameworks to articulate the historical experience. The book is a very earnest, ethically driven, intellectual, and somehow unavoidably personal attempt to understand what happened to Russia - and to articulate that understanding. The Future Is History without doubt becomes one of the most excellent and important books on contemporary Russia. My issue is the scope of Gessen's interviews. They are seven people - a sociologist, a historian, a psychologist, and the rest are participants and witnesses of their times. But six out of seven are Moscovites. And seven out of seven hold university degrees. Six out of seven were born into intelligentsia. Two out of seven come from prominent political families. And while those are the people who are most visible - due to their location and privileged background - and active in the story that Gessen is telling, they do not have to consume the central spot within it. What happened to Russia is not solely what happened to academics' kids in Moscow.

Masha’s work on the fall of democracy in Russia is arresting. The focus on Homo soveticus in the early chapters portends how historical injustices persevere through succeeding generations. The failings of Boris Yeltsin shine through, and the disturbing rise of Vladimir Putin is written with an appropriate sense of mourning for what comes. While non-fiction, it is not written as non-fiction. We live the lives of Masha’s interviewees in her elegant prose. For much of the book (90’s and 00’s) we can almost relate to their aspirations. As Putin’s second time in power (in name) begins in 2012, we see authoritarianism fall across Russia like a blanket. The violence against LGBT people and the political assassinations are not just abstract events helping elsewhere, they happen to people we know through the text.Russia’s story isn’t just disaster tourism - events in China, the EU, and even the USA demand that this book be taken seriously. Anyone who believes it can’t happen here, wherever here may be, needs to read the last chapters where the pace of democratic collapse is as dumbfounding to Russians as it is to readers.

Review

"Bracing, head-clearing and ultimately inspiring. With rigor and wit [this] book show how millions of successful, hard-working Americans, often with the best of intentions, have helped build a society where birth matters more than brilliance. Impassioned, data-driven and focused on practical solutions, "Dream Hoarders" is a fine cure for an age of stale, cynical politics."Â - David Rennie, US Bureau Chief, The Economist"A great, short book" - Annie Lowrey, The Atlantic"Dream Hoarders is a slim and engaging book which can be read in an afternoon, but whose message lingers for longer." The Economist"Recently, scholars and social activists have set off alarm bells about the rising concentration of income among the top one percent. Richard Reeves urges us to turn our attention to a wider slice of affluent Americans - the top fifth - and the result is a devastating empirical portrait of damage done to "the bottom eighty"...This captivating and stirring book is likely to make many of its readers uncomfortable." - Janet C. Gornick, Professor of Political Science and Sociology, CUNYÂ "Richard Reeves is has long been one of the most authoritative, insightful and sage voices on the big questions gripping modern societies. Here he tackles one of the most urgent - inequality and how to solve it - and comes up with serious answers." - Jonathan Freedland, The Guardian"We have met the enemy, and he is us: we who were smart enough to pick the right parents and now occupy the high ground in post-industrial America. Richard Reeves makes his case brilliantly and--a tough act to pull off--engagingly." - Charles Murray, AEI, author of Coming Apart"Warning: Reeves' book will challenge some of your assumptions, no matter what your views are...Dream Hoarders will shake you up, teach you a lot and make you think much harder."Â - E.J. Dionne Jr., Author of Why the Right Went Wrong

From the Author

This book seems to have hit a nerve. Even when people don't agree with me (and a lot of people do not) I feel good if the conversation about inequality becomes a bit more personal, and a bit less focused on the super-rich. Very pleased it made it onto the Economist list of Books of the Year 2017.

I am Canadian and currently living in the United States. Coming from solidly lower middle class roots, I am certain that I never would have attended University if I had been born here. It accurately explains in detail a lot of what I have personally noticed about how class works in America. While Canada is only marginally better in terms of class mobility, I prefer living in a society where there is that margin and plan to move back if I have children. As an elementary school teacher here, I personally can testify to how segregated and unfair the public school system is in at least Washington, Oklahoma and Florida. Simply separating funding of public schools from property values would be a huge start. America is really mortgaging it’s future by not educating its youth just so that the wealthy can stay wealthy. I see countless missed opportunities everyday. Bright children capable of doing so much more but who will end up working meaningless jobs stocking shelves at Walmart or flipping burgers their whole lives simply because they were born in the wrong zip code. The one thing I found lacking was better data to support his conclusions. But then again it would have made the book less readable and inaccessible to a general audience.I bought a copy for my upper middle class in-laws hoping that it might make them understand at least why I wince every time they rejoice about getting coveted internships for their friends daughter/son by using this or that connection.

This is an informative and compelling look at the growth of income inequality in the US, but it presents only part of the picture. To begin with what's new and different in this book, it looks at income inequality in a different focus. Instead of zeroing on the one percent as so many have done, Reeves focusses on the 19% -- those whose incomes come in between the 80th and the 99th percentile, a group that he describes as the upper middle class. The incomes of this group have grown much faster than incomes for the country as a whole (if less rapidly than the incomes of the 1%). Moreover, income gains have been bolstered and protected by other benefits, political and social in nature. The tax deduction for mortgage interest and the 529 college savings programs, for example, mostly benefit the upper middle class. The children of the 19%, on average, attend far better schools than most American children, and are far likelier to attend and graduate from college. This is not accidental, Reeves argues. Upper middle class parents are fiercely focussed on getting their children the best educations possible, by restrictive zoning and legacy admissions as well as by intensive home support. It's a compelling argument, and we -- most readers of this book are probably members of the upper middle class -- need to recognize that the deck is stacked in our favor. But it's also an incomplete argument. An excellent review of the book in "The Economist" points out the basic problem of focussing on the 19% rather than on the 1%, saying "Since around 2000 the incomes of the upper middle class, excluding the top 1%, have not grown by much, and the income premium earned by those with university degrees has plateaued." Over that period, the income of the 1% has soared: in fact, since 2009, the 1% has copped about 95% of ALL income gains. Politically, focussing on the barriers that the upper middle class has established to protect it's position is an admirable goal. But so is focussing on the massive income gains that the upper class -- if we may so call the 1% -- has wrested from the system. All in all, this book is well worth reading, but remember that the 19% is only part of the problem.

This book analyses what Americans in the top 20% income brackets do to make their children the most qualified for the best colleges and jobs and how this causes inequality and lack of upward mobility. He does not say this is the only cause, with mass immigration of unskilled workers being another one. He proposes possible policy solutions and points out that many of them are opposed by both Democrats and Republicans. THe biggest potential value of this book for parents is that it is a primer of how to get your children into the best schools and jobs although it will be harder for you than somebody making $200K a year. I plan to give this book to my son for that purpose. You may not agree with the author that the current situation is unfair or agree with all his policy recommendations but it will be good for you to know details of the situation.

This is a quick, overview perspective book. There are some unique points, but the actual content is probably better covered in Charles Murray's Coming Apart or Our Kids by Robert Putnam. However, I give Reeves credit for not holding back and providing some much needed honesty.

The most important part is that Reeves himself falls into the category he discusses, the top 20% of earners in the US.Because of Reeves' position this is not a book about guilt. It is a book about self-reflection on our society's idea of the "self made man". How self made are the children who have a golden parachute, and how much opportunity are we taking away from kids who maybe would have gotten that internship if you hadn't made that call? This book is genuinely about wealth (which to a great extent means white) privilege and the responsibilities that comes with these. What makes this topic so difficult is the fact that we feel like, there's so little we can do about the whole thing - I'm gonna give to the ACLU every month and just have to sit feeling bad that our parents' are going to leave us a million dollar house - Dream Hoarders offers real, tangible, put into motion tomorrow suggestions for how to negate the hoarding of privileges that the upper middle class is doing.Reeves is also pretty funny in that dry, I'm mocking you but you accept it because you like me way, that only British people can pull off so the book is enormously readable too (for a book on socioeconomics).

This book was okay. He makes some good points about the causes of inequality. But for some reason I feel like this is just half of a book. The same content is repeated in the 2nd half of this one...

Well Joshua Dalzelle has not let me down with this latest installment in his Expansion Wars Trilogy. I enjoy his talent for never losing track of the time factor that would be present in space combat due to the enormous distances and yet not trying to fill that time with story in order to make it seem more real. That would leave me yawning and looking for another author. In this installment Dalzelle expands his area of operations to include some land battles also. I hope to see him keep going along this line since he has shown that he can weave the two simultaneous environments together to give the reader a better overall picture of what is taking place on the grand scale rather than leaving them wondering how one bears upon the other. If you are looking for a story that delves so very deep into character development that you are privy to most of the hidden fears and nuances that each of us carry around then don't buy this book. This is military fiction that keeps you involved and entertained. In my opinion Joshua Dalzelle has more than hit his stride and my only regret would be if he suddenly hit a road block to his writing as happened to George R.R. Martin. I will be ready to order when the next volume in this trilogy becomes available.

Just finished the latest book set in the Black Fleet universe: Iron and Blood (Expansion Wars, Book 2) and I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I have the other books in the series. Dalzelle writes well, his plot-lines are well thought out and I love his characters, particularly Jackson Wolfe, Celesta Wright and of course resident spy/agent and sometime aide to President Wellington, Pike. This time Dalzelle doubles down on the action, following the Marine campaign on the planet Juwel and the fleet battles between Starfleet and the Darshik (the bad aliens in this current series). Thrown into the mix (and to make life difficult for our favourite Captains Wolfe and Wright) is an unknown stealth ship and cowardly captains whose ineffective leadership are bound to cost the unnecessary loss of life. There is some intriguing revelations around the Ushin and Darshik (these are the two alien species who have caused trouble for the Terran Federation) that was certainly a surprise. Overall, Iron and Blood was worth the read - it had plenty of action, great character and plot development and was just all round entertaining. Can hardly wait for the next book which is due out later in the year :)

For his "twilight cruise" before retirement, Phage War hero Jackson Wolfe is assigned as program manager for a major space intelligence development project. After a sudden attack by renegade aliens he is returned to active duty as captain of the TFS Aludra Star to deliver reinforcing troops and supplies to the Juwel world. When his escorting destroyers transition to a far different orbital position, Wolfe and the TFS Aludra Star are forced to develop new tactics "on-the-fly". The unexpected appearance of the TFS Icarus, commanded by Wolfe's former executive officer, Celesta Wright proves to be a blessing, but will it be enough to salvage the mission.

Well done. One can always count on Mr. Dalzelle to provide a complex and engaging SciFi adventure. As always his research into naval warfare pays off. The characters aren't Nobel worthy, but they have enough depth to draw the reader in. Great book!

This latest iteration of Dalzelle's space opera doesn't disappoint. In this series, I'd put his writing on par with far more recognized authors like Timothy Zahn, Orson Scott Card and John Scalzi. The plot is interesting, the characters are varied and increasingly developed throughout the series. The storyline is, in my opinion, well-paced; there's plenty of action and intrigue, but some occasional reflection by the characters in ways that build the universe and (possibly) set the stage future elements of the story. Dalzelle states in the afterward that he is consciously shaping this particular trilogy to focus on a relatively limited aspect of the interaction (no, it's not ALL fighting) between humans and other species, rather than making this yet another life-or-death-of-the-species struggle.Significantly, Dalzelle does a notably good job of keeping the storyline free of the sort of political or ethical commentary that is all too common in the science fiction genre. If you enjoy this series, you'll probably also enjoy the Ember War Saga by Richard Fox.

Outstanding read! I kept reading other books and then coming back to Iron & Blood just trying to stretch it out a little longer. Captain Wolfe is one of my favorite characters in Space Opera. Just the right combination of humility and self confidence combined with the ability to put himself into the mind of his opponents makes Jackson Wolfe the leader the Federation needs even though Admiral Marcum hates him. When the Darshik attack Marcum realizes he needs Wolfe and drags him out of retirement. Even put in command of an outdated assault carrier, Wolfe shines.

This is another good series the action is good as well as story line. I think it was good keeping the blunt of the story in one system. I am eager for the next omega force story as well as the next book in the expansion wars series.

Slightly altered writing style, this book is again a masterpiece of sci-fi, just like the four books of the Black Fleet universe. This is the story of a single campaign told from several viewpoints that creates a balanced mix of space action and ground pounding. Favourite characters Wolf and Wright keep doing what they do best...The storytelling is superb, with great dialogues and three dimensional characters.I bought it, read it, and can't find wait for the next one to come out.

This book is a wonderful guide that takes you directly into portrait painting from a photo. What is excellent is the diversity of skin tones; I was able to use her layering method of transparent color and apply it to my own photos for pictures; I just match the skin from my photo to a portrait in the book. She also guides you all the way through to the end of the picture with all the important details that many authors gloss over; creating realistic shadow tones mixing and applying "crevice"darks- around nostrils, ear folds, eye lids etc. And other important finishing touches hair, eyelashes even facial hair. The author includes many useful tips inset on pages throughout the book as well as demonstrations for children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. The demos are very thorough and I find myself referring to it to create the palette for skin tones and shadows almost every time I sit to paint a figure. A terrific book that can add to your skill set and improve your understanding of creating vibrant transparent luminous skin and hair. Her method takes time, layering and allowing to dry up to 10 or 12 layers of transparent watercolor but the results are wonderful, this is not direct or spontaneous or alla primal approach but you can definitely learn tips on portrait painting you can use no matter what your preferred style but the book teaches you how to paint skin hair and fabric, not how to draw.Great book highly recommended!! A methodical approach that works!(I also like Charles Reid figure/portrait book which is completely 180 degrees in the opposite style but I think these two approaches can balance you to a happy medium)

I absolutely love this book, so much so that I have a copy on my NOOK and this hard copy. It's been on my bedside since I bought it and I pull it out when I paint. Along with Suzanna Winton's videos, I was able to start doing portraits right away when I got them.It shows several step-by-step demonstrations for different ages, styles, skin tones, hair and background. These are varied enough that you get a good grasp on the necessaries for any subject you want to paint. The steps are well-detailed and there are tips throughout the book, of course it starts with lots of information in the beginning. Highly recommended.

I ordered this book because of a wonderful painting of two little black girls I saw on the cover of "Watercolor Magic." I wanted to find something by that artist. Previous to this I had only painted two black subjects, a young man and a young woman, and I was not totally satisfied with the skin tones I had achieved. This book has step-by-step demonstrations of nine different skin and hair types, and their varying ages, which is extremely helpful. The book is full of wonderful explanations of why and how to alter backgrounds and when to soften edges. After painting many oil portraits, I still needed guidance when it came to painting watercolor portraits, and this book provided it. Ms. Winton is a most generous teacher.

Previously I painted two watercolor portraits of my grandaughters and they were both very scary looking so I knew I needed to get some experience. I bought this book and have read thru it completely trying to get an idea of what I'll be doing and what I'll be learning. Looks to me like the book is very well done , and should be easy to follow. I tried a few other portrait books and it seemed as I went thru the steps there would always be something done to the painting that wasn't mentioned in the privious step. I'm going to start my first portrait of a friend but will follow the steps provided in an example that is a lot like the person I'll be doing. After reading thru the whole book I believe this is exactly what I was looking for and would recomended it to others that want to try their hand at watercolor portraits.

This book is by far the best book available today on watercolor portrait painting. Watercolor can be a little difficult because it does what IT wants to do. This book breaks it down in simple steps. I decided to try it and was just thrilled with my success! My very first attempt is show worthy! If I could stick a picture of it in here I would!! This is an ESSENTIAL for anyone wanting to give watercolor portraits a try. Follow it step by step and you cannot fail. Love it

I took one of Suzanna's terrific watercolor portrait courses and learned a lot. This book details so much of what she taught. It is an excellent guide.

Ms. Winton takes a somewhat different approach to portrait-painting-- by ethnic types. The book's strongest point is demonstrating how the mis of colors affects the overall ethnic look of the subject.

Have paged through this book and read the step by step on this technique. I like what I see. To paint watercolor portraits that are beautiful without the large purple or green swathes in the skin tones, is exactly what I have been searching for. Cannot wait to give the technique a try.
