This book should be good but the website has not been updated in almost four years. As far as I can tell you can no longer download the free version of the Unreal Development Kit, which the book is based on! I emailed the authors using the link on the text's site and my email was returned stating that their box was full and that my email could not be delivered. The light is on and no one is home! I now have a $56 paperweight! PLEASE save your money! If I could give it zero stars I would!

This book is so good at step-by-step explanation and exercises that I've adopted it as the text for my Audio for Video Games course at UVU. Recommended.

This book gave me a feel for how audio works in video games. It allowed me to look at games in a different way.

A great product for anyone interested in video game audio and especially the Unreal Development Kit. Be forewarned though that the UDK is an ever evolving engine so some of the tools and topics used have changed or are outdated. The online resources are an excellent as well.

I enjoyed this combination of step by step exercises and in-depth discussion much more than I expected to, based on the title and blurb. I thought it might be some high-level, tweak-the-templates walkthrough but the book covers game audio in depth, from processing ambient and abstract sounds, to dialog as well as integrating actual music. There's even a section on music-based games, where audio drives the gameplay, rather than its more typical role of enhancing and adding realism to graphic action.The authors use the open source Unreal Development Kit (UDK) to present a sample game level that you enhance by following the tutorials. In many cases, they've left markers for you or created game `actors' that you provide sound for. The tutorial steps are set up and elaborated upon with detailed discussion, rather than simply, 'Do this, then do that'. The goal is for you to understand concepts and apply the techniques in your own creations rather than just work through the book.I really underestimated the content and capabilities of integrated game development environments such as UDK, which I hadn't used before. As a musician familiar with DAWs and graphics programs it's interesting to see how UDK incorporates elements of both, along with a kind of table-driven code generator. You get fine-grained access to details but you're working at the abstraction layer of the game, rather than in the low-level code. As someone who keyed in C and assembler game listings years ago for hours on end, praying they would compile, no less actually run, this is a revelation.The opening tutorials demonstrate ambient room sound, the problem of walls and simulating natural attenuation to create realistic presence. This really set the stage and hammered home to me just how far game audio has come from the monophonic, predictably repetitive little tunes that graced the games I first played and experimented with coding.There are tutorials demonstrating how to reuse audio samples by manipulating them with filters and even pitch shifting. Others show how to apply reverb and set up ambient zones that map to physical scenes. Some of these features may not be a parameter-rich as in a DAW that's dedicated to music production, but they're more than adequate for games where, let's face it, most of the time audio plays second fiddle to visual action. And you can always use your favorite DAW to generate material to import into UDK.The first three chapters deal with ambient and abstract sound and the corresponding UDK tools. The book really hit its stride for me in chapter 4 with music and the techniques and tools for integrating it. Some of the track synchronization demonstrations will feel familiar to anyone who's coordinated video and sound inside a DAW.What most interested me were the techniques of layering, randomizing and recombining musical and sound elements to keep the audio as dynamic and interesting as the graphical elements. A recurring theme is the authors' view that, in the non-linear narrative world of interactive games, there's a delicate balance between familiar and unfamiliar elements. It can really intrude on a player's sense of exploration to hear audio that repeats too predictably, especially when the visual context has clearly changed.There are practicalities in the book as well: UDK targets game audio development for a variety of platforms, including phones and dedicated consoles with more restricted memory and storage. So there's a detailed discussion of file compression and the tradeoffs between streaming audio from disk as oppose to loading everything into RAM. As a reference, I'm running a desktop PC with 6GB of RAM and a 2.93 GHz i3 processor and the response is playable and the audio is clean.The accompanying website and instructions for downloading and setting up your UDK environment are straightforward. There's a more recent UDK Beta available but I chose to stick with the version the authors used, based on my experiences with other books. If you're unfamiliar with UDK, as I was, the editor interface is pretty busy and it took a while for me to get my bearings. Way back in Appendix C the authors recommend checking out the UDK docs and online info for the basics. I would have appreciated being told that in the book's intro; it would have saved some frustration.I'd recommend the book not just to composers and game developers but to anyone interested in sound design for music and media. Obviously it's tailored towards interactive games but many of the concepts and techniques can be applied elsewhere in, for example, film and TV scoring, experimental composition or multimedia art.The `Game Audio Tutorial' is intelligent, well-written, and takes its subject seriously (It's also a lot of fun to work through, so don't be put off if fun is your main motivation).

The title says it all. If I had the choice to extend the title, it would be something more like "The In-depth Guide to Game Audio Creation, Execution and Theory."This book is perfect for someone looking to either start learning or enhance their knowledge of audio in game design. The book uses the Unreal Development Kit for its series of tutorials and teaches users how to use its basic features (mostly Unreals' scripting program "Kismet") to produce studio quality sound in an interactive game.One of the things that makes this book easy to pick up is that no prior knowledge is required. If you have never used a 3d game design tool before, the first few chapters of the book break down the basics for you showing you how to create, manipulate, move and test assets in a 3d environment (Though I do not suggest using this book as a level builder guide. If you have no experience in a 3d game editor, I suggest reading up on that first before tackling audio.) The book uses premade levels (which you can pick up from their website) which helps in shortening the learning curve so that way you can get down and dirty with the audio design. Another great advantage of this book is that the concepts you learn in UDK will carry over to a variety of other game engines such as Unity and Source.As far as the content it teaches goes, you can find pretty much all of it on the internet. UDK's website has many good articles on how to effectively use their tools to design game audio. The reason this book is better than most internet resources is that:1. It takes you through every step2. All of the information you need is in one quick to look at resource instead of 30 tabs on your internet browser3. Investigates a much more focused area of game design rather than most UDK references (which cover a much more generalized selection of fields)4. This book explains the theory behind game audio unlike most internet tutorials.As an aspiring game designer, I can easily say that after reading this book I have a much better understanding of how to effectively use sound and music when designing levels for games to create a large variety of emotional responses from the player and has indeed furthered my knowledge of game design. If you plan on going into game design for a career, I highly recommend this book.

In November, 2010 I read about the artistic exploits of Wafaa Bilal and was intrigued. So intrigued I blogged about his latest project and posted it in several online forums. I also ordered his book, "Shoot an Iraqi; Art, Life, and Resistance Under the Gun" co-written with Kari Lydersen. I read it in one sitting. Astonishing in content and brilliantly written, Bilal and Lydersen have taken, by my first estimate, an ill-conceived, albeit somewhat artistic, publicity stunt and turned it into a MUST READ commentary on the cost of war...now my second and more accurate estimate.In a nutshell Wafaa writes about his confinement to an exhibit room at the Flat File Gallery in Chicago. He called the exhibit "Domestic Tension" and lived within its confines for one month. That's the domestic part. The tension comes from the added twist. If you visited him, either on-line or in person, he gave you the option to fire a yellow paint ball at him at 300 feet per second, all day, every day. Approximately 65,000 balls of yellow paint were fired during his ordeal. He was forced to live under the fear of being whacked at anytime. There was a field of fire available to the paint ball gun which he could escape be remaining close to the ground...inducing the stress of literally living "Under the Gun". When online visitors stopped in they could chat with him directly, setting up a tension between those who could reach out to the humanity of the situation observing and bearing witness to the ongoing persecution, and those who wanted to have sadistic fun at the expense of another human being. (NOTE: Although sadistic fun unfortunately occurs in warfare I do not believe it is a primary driver yet it does become another ugly cost of war).As he writes about his ordeal during his month in captivity he wraps in the story of his early life growing up in Iraq under the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. He describes what life was like for the Iraqi people, their hopes and dreams for education and prosperity, their day to day family existence, with both their good humor and sanity evaporating during what has now amounted to almost three decades of constant war. Wafaa escaped as a refugee to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and finally to the United States but carries the scars of many haunting years of fear and persecution in its countless forms. That is what he was trying to recreate in "Shoot and Iraqi" as a cathartic response to the guilt he has felt by leaving Iraq and thus surviving to tell his tale."Shoot an Iraqi" is not a war protest, though many who read it might consider it so...I might also add that some associated with his project seem to convey a clear anti-war vibe...yet Wafaa resisted the invite to preach rather he simply wants us to think about the cost of war in human terms rather than ethical or moral implications. This book is also not an indictment on the use of remotely piloted vehicles to execute war, which have gained so much favor and criticism during the wars in the Middle East...yet remain highly misunderstood. Again, Wafaa resists the temptation to draw too many parallels between what he was doing and this new brand of warfare. Early on he exhibits a desire to make the parallel, primarily when he attributes a tragic event which cost the life of many innocent civilians to reconnaissance conducted by an unmanned aircraft. Only in the sense that violence is being executed at a distance can the two be compared. No other parallels to this brand of warfare exist. But this is not a debate to have in this book review. The other parallels to the stress of those caught in the war zone and living minute by minute "Under the Gun" with the constant threat of death are quite real.Wafaa has a unique vision in his art form that will continue to elicit strong criticism, censorship, and even persecution, whether intentionally by his own hand or by the hand of ignorance. He grows and we grow as a result of what he has experienced and has shared. This book goes a long way in reducing the hand of the ignorance...in this particular case mine.

Typically I try not to get into politics of wars but as fate had it, I actually had the privilege of having Wafaa himself as a professor when I attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago a few years back when he was still teaching there. I didn't know what to expect having an Iraqi for a professor, mostly because I had little knowledge of Iraq outside of media coverage. As I began to get to know him, not only did I start to learn about his life and his part played within the political climate, I also learned how his artwork turned into a pivotal role in his own survival. His past artwork has shown how he is able to bring up controversial issues in a way that illuminates both sides yet remains unbiased. He is truly inspirational and I was constantly in awe of him when he was my professor. I decided to buy his book sometime later out of curiosity and it stood up well to the actual man it is about. The book does a fantastic job of jumping back and forth from his life growing up in Iraq to one of his more current pieces "Domestic Tension." The book also does a tremendous job explaining his artwork, why it was necessary for him to work "Domestic Tension" (a piece that literally had people shooting paintballs at him over the internet) and also what the cost of war is on a human level. Whether you're an artist, interested in the impact of war or just interested in biographies, I highly, highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. It's well written and provides more information than just about Wafaa's art project, but his life story. I like the parallel story structure and the incite that the book provided. I'm interested in art and Iraq, so this book was perfect.

This is a excellent book about one of the more important pieces of performance art in the last ten years.

This is a moving and poignant piece that deserves a wide audience. I feel fortunate to have read it.

I had to buy this book for a college level course. The professor drew empty comparisons between Wafaa's project and the bombing of his brother. People on the internet are not US soldiers, a paintball gun is not a real gun, and Wafaa himself was not the labeled terrorist his brother was. I believe my professor is teaching it this way as that was the original purpose of the project and he is friends with Wafaa himself.Where I do believe this book has great potential value is in a psychology setting. Wafaa describes his struggles with living in a war torn Iraq very well. I see his project as his way of dealing with PTSD as it gets pretty brutal at times, his project and his life before. And in that I do believe this book has great value, but for the purpose of my course, in my opinion the professor focused on the wrong aspects to try and make it seem like the US government is bad instead of looking at the more useful aspects of the book.

It's a good introduction to Plantinga's epistemology for people who have no philosophical background, but laymen shouldn't think that, after reading this short book, they've mastered Plantinga's thought (which is the case with the person who gave this book a one star review). If the reader is interested in other books which are half technical and half aimed at they lay person, they should see his "Where the Conflict Really Lies: Science Religion, and Naturalism" and "Warranted Christian Belief", but be warned that those books are not nearly as readable/easy to understand as this book.

This book is compelling only if one comes to accept what he is trying to prove: that Christian belief has warrant. That is not the same thing as proving that it is true. Others may attempt to do that, but Plantinga thinks it a futile task. Christian belief can only be shown to be more probable than not. It cannot be prove true with 100% certainty. If you fail to understand the limitation of this work, then it will frustrate you immensely.

Significant and systematic defense of the Christian faith, proposed in a highly logical and self-contained treatise. An incredible feat of using logic & reason to show the merit & warrant of the faith of intelligent & carful thinkers. Clearly one of the most important religious philosophy books of modern time.I’ll admit I felt portions of his core (Aquila’s/Calvinistic) model were not as impregnable as they had been billed. However, on average, I fit into the mold he describes, so maybe I’m objecting too much. And most of what comes after the A/C model presentation requires acceptance of the model as a predicate; if you’re not with him on that,I made tons of highlights that I’ll make into a personal study guide.

A very readable and very compelling explanation as to why Christian belief is basic and why it is completely defensible rationally. What is basic belief? (I admit I didn't understand this until reading this). When you walk into a room and you see a chair, you have a belief that there is a chair there. You don't need rational, philosophical arguments to prove it. You have direct, incontrovertible evidence. How Christian belief is basic in that sense I will let Dr Plantiga explain.

Illuminary Alvin Plantinga, twice Gifford Lecturer and “America’s leading orthodox Protestant philosopher of God” (TIME), curtails his 530 paged magnum opus, Warranted Christian Belief, into an accessible 126 paged Knowledge and Christian Belief. Alvin’s highly nuanced language insists attentive reading despite his simplistic thesis: Christian belief, if true, warrants belief. There are four major characteristics of warranted belief: (1) cognitive faculties functioning properly; (2) appropriate cognitive environment for those faculties; (3) according to design; and (4) successfully aimed at truth (see italicized at the bottom of p. 28). Alvin follows the “A/C (Aquinas and Calvin) model” of sensus divinitatis as “basic” or presuppositional. Just as seeing the sun rise is basic–without the arduous need of cognitive activity–warranted belief arises through the work of the Holy Spirit and sensus divinitatis (seed of divinity), if true, as basic. What does this mean? Christian belief on its own ground is firmly rooted; the question of “is it true?” cannot be answered by the philosophers: it is God’s domain.[...]

Before I say anything, I will say first that Plantinga's work on warrant has been terribly misunderstood and misused in the popular sphere. In part, this is due to philosophers such as William Lane Craig, who, though I'm sure he didn't intend to make this implication, by appealing to Plantinga's proper basicality in the context of an argument for the reality of God, has implied that this is some sort of theistic argument. It is not. The problem facing Christian epistemologists is this: the vast majority of Christians today, and indeed the vast majority of Christians who have ever lived, have never studied philosophy, history, science, or apologetics. So how can they know that God exists and Christianity is true? We wouldn't deny that they have a true relationship with God in Christ, but are we forced to say that they have a true, but unwarranted belief unless they have studied apologetics or academic theology?Plantinga's answer is no: whether or not Christians have formally studied theology or apologetics, they are still warranted in holding belief in God and Christ. Essential to this is Plantinga's four criteria for a warranted belief: it must be the result of a cognitive faculty intended to produce true belief, that faculty must be functioning in the environment for which it was designed, it must be well designed, and it must be operating without defects. What the careful reader will notice is that these criteria are inescapably teleological: the implication is that if a faculty was not designed for anything at all, or if it is oriented merely towards survival and not truth for its own sake, then all of one's beliefs produced by said faculty are unwarranted. This is where Plantinga gets the evolutionary argument against naturalism. But for the sake of this book, that's besides the point. What all of us recognize is that on the Christian view, rationality is one such faculty of the mind aimed at truth: one can really have warranted beliefs derived from rationality.The critical point, for Plantinga, is that it is not the only such faculty. There is what John Calvin calls the "sensus divinitatis." This is the inherent sense of divinity we all possess. In support of this, Plantinga points to anthropological evidence suggesting that most people, under certain conditions, spontaneously form the belief that there is a person such as God. They do so when observing the beauty of the world, reflecting on the sheer gratuitous nature of existence, and so on. This is not the result of a philosophical argument like "The world is beautiful, therefore theism." Instead, it is spontaneous and formed without argument. As Plantinga points out, if Christian theism is true, there is very likely something such as the sensus divinitatis. Thus, if Christian theism is true, then a properly basic belief in God is very likely warranted.Plantinga aims to extend this beyond mere theism and towards Christian theism. Essentially, he does so by appealing to the internal witness of the Holy Spirit. Again, it's key to point out that this is not an argument for the truth of Christianity. It is not as if a person says "I have the witness of the Spirit, therefore you ought to accept the Christian faith." Instead, the argument is that if Christian theism is true, then there is probably something like the witness of the Spirit which provides warrant directly, apart from rational argument. In my estimation, Plantinga's argument is largely sound, and accomplishes the task of showing how your average believer is warranted in subscribing to Christianity, even if they are not philosophically astute.There's one question I have with respect to Plantinga's extended A-C model. In his chapter on whether pluralism constitutes a defeater for Christian belief, Plantinga cashes out the nature of an arbitrary conclusion. It's not arbitrary to subscribe to one faith in the midst of many faiths as long as one thinks one is privy to a source of warrant that most other persons are not. For example, if one has studied a set of unique arguments providing warrant for Christianity and most people have not, it's not arbitrary to hold Christianity. If one has reflected upon purported defeaters for Christian belief and concluded that they are unsound, it's not arbitrary to take them as unsuccessful. Similarly, Plantinga says, if one believes oneself to be privy to the witness of the Spirit, then it's not arbitrary to hold most others to be wrong. I follow Plantinga most of the way here, but I'm not sure how to get around the objection that there are other faiths which seek warrant in the same fashion. For example, Mormons believe that the witness of the Spirit (understood in Mormon terms) provides warrant for one's belief in the historicity of the Book of Mormon. Plantinga, presumably, holds that they are wrong.I'm not sure how one could avoid the charge of arbitrary belief if one rejects the notion that a Mormon is warranted in the same sense that a classical Christian is. Of course, one could suggest that since Mormonism is false, their warrant is not genuine, and this would be fine as far as it goes, since Plantinga's argument is that if Christian theism is true, then it is probably warranted in a basic way. Still, I think that in order to avoid the charge of arbitrary selection of beliefs, one would need a way to more substantially distinguish between the Mormon experience and the classical Christian experience. I'm sure Plantinga has discussed such objections elsewhere, and I'm certainly not claiming a decisive refutation of Plantinga's thesis (as I said, I go with it all the way with respect to theism in general). Still, this is a question I'm still working through.Altogether, I recommend that those who are interested in Plantinga's overall thesis consult this book for an introduction to his views, recognizing that he has developed them in more depth in his three volume series on warrant and Christian belief.

I am always impressed by Alvin Platinga's response to the various forms of atheistic worldview. This is a short book where he summed up some of his responses.

This book is well written, and a non-philosopher should be able to understand it all. Plantinga here also presents his major arguments with slight variations from before, all updates done in response to all that has been written about the arguments. So it's all reasonable and very well argued.
