I’m often suspicious of biographies. Most of the time I wonder how well the author got to know the subject of the biography. Did they get to interview the subject personally? Was the subject completely honest with the biographer? Does the biographer have an agenda or viewpoint that contradicts with the real story?I don’t have any of those concerns regarding Dave Burchett’s new book, Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss, and Grace. Though Dave is writing about Hannah, and later Maggie, he’s telling their story from his perspective – that of a best friend. Because Hannah and Maggie are man’s best friend – dogs. Dave has written what I think is the best biography of an animal as told from a human viewpoint that I’ve ever read.I’ve not stopped thinking about what the vet said after giving Dave the emotional news of a terminal diagnosis for this beloved furry friend. The doctor explained that Hannah didn’t know she had cancer and would live each remaining day with all the life she had in her. “Dogs have no fear of death, so they live in the moment. Enjoy each moment that you have.” What began Dave’s journey of observing and learning from Hannah has the potential to shake you to the core of how you live life. The lessons he learned along the way are for all of us.The freedom and grace Dave discovered through the months that remained for Hannah will shatter your view of rules, legalistic morality, anger, and even death. *spoilers**Dave Burchett, leads us on a story of goodness and grace through the life he leads with his dogs, but mostly with his best life friend, Hannah, a golden retriever, the dog his family had during one of the lowest times of their life.When Burchett’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, he started a journal. The book is written from the first person, and as journal entries I loved that about the book. This book was fantastic.During Joni’s cancer treatments, Hannah stayed by their side and seems to “read” her owners behaviors and their love. Giving them some comfort and peace during each treatment and after her surgery. Then sweet Hannah was diagnosed with cancer.They chose a course of treatment that would only make Hannah comfortable and keep her out of pain.During those next few months they saw a lifetime of love, and grace in the way that Hannah lived her life. Putting their needs first. Hannah lived in the moment and was free. One of the best quotes in the book was when the vet told them this “dogs don’t fear death, they live in the moment”After Hannah’s illness took her, Dave thought he would never be able to love again, however, when he saw sweet Savannah’s face, he fell in love.When they brought Savannah home, they knew that her name was too close to Hannah’s so they eventually changed her name to Maggie. In doing so they learned that Maggie, didn’t really realize her name well. When they enrolled Maggie in obedience class, they learned the things she needed. In doing so they learned Maggie needed a leader, someone to take her and tell her yes, no, sit, stay, the commands in every dog’s life, as well as teach her to walk on a leash and guide.Dave took each lesson that he learned and related it back to the Bible with a timely Bible verse, or story from the Bible and this book became a lesson, literally on grace, and humility. Love, loss and learning.Learning from your dog is a very gracious thing because of what they can teach you. Turning that back and about Jesus Christ and how much He sacrificed for us.What a blessing this book was for me. While I love my dog with all my heart and they are treated basically like royalty in my home, I was able to see that every day they give us everything they have every minute of their life.God gives us everything we have, we just have to accept it. What a graceful life lesson this book is. I highly urge you to read it. Read it with your Bible in hand and get a great Bible study as well as just a great read!

Well, I bought the book on Amazon, and I am very pleased with the great stories and insightful wisdom from Dave Burchett, my dear friend from sports television days and still my dear friend as he releases his new book, "Stay, Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss and Grace". When I read Christian literature, I look for a few "must haves", and Dave hit them all; first, there is a compelling story -- without the skills of storytelling, Dave's tome would have been bland and unmotivating, but as it is, it's a page-turner; second, he's done his homework in the word of God, so in laying out his story with his dogs, and the people who love him and his canine family, his references to scripture are timely and succinct. His juxtaposition of fear, love and loss, reveals both a man immersed in faith and yet fearful of "what might come". And yet, regardless of the ups and downs, Dave's experiences lead to insights that bring him and his family to peace, in spite of fear and loss.A motivating, conversational read, well worth the cost and the several hours invested to read it.

A true LOST fan will absolutely love this book. I have been a LOST fan since it first debuted on ABC. I have the DVDs and have watched the entire series several times. This encyclopedia is the best LOST reference I have found in print. Reading through the encyclopedia will make you want to go back and re-watch the series. This is a must have for a true LOST fanatic.

Okay...people who complain about this book seem pretty petty to me. I read some of the reviews and thought this was a book full of mistakes and therefore didn't buy it for a while. I'm sorry I waited! I've looked through it quite a bit and haven't found any mistakes yet. I'm not saying there aren't any, but they sure aren't that obvious.This book is pretty incredible. If you like Lost you will NOT be disappointed with this resource. It's a great conversation piece and it's worth having. The in depth information, pictures, and trivia are impressive.The forward by the writers of the show talk about how all the extra information surrounding the show provide the 90% of the 'iceberg' under the surface, and if you want to know way more than you ever thought about the Lost universe, this will give it to you.

There are some great reviews here that are worth reading. My review is simple: While there are typos & quirky commissions it is a must have for Lost fans. I will browse through it every now & then for entertainment and always notice something interesting.That being said it is driving me Crazy as to the COVER PHOTO. I know all the characters, know backstroke and I cannot say with certainty who is pictured between Desmond Hume & Sun Kwon. It has to be Eloise Hawking or Cassidy maybe? (Not Nikki as Paulo isn't pictured) - maybe Cindy? I have tried to google it and failed to find an answer on google, Lostpedia, or even the book itself??? Help? :-) All other characters are accounted for and cannot think of one that would be nestled between 2 main original characters.

I can't be termed a "Lostie", as I never watched the show on TV. But when the complete DVD set went on sale, I bought it and this Lost Encyclopedia. Then I shelved the Encyclopedia, to not open it until after I'd finished the series. There is so much switchback, mysterious foretelling and convoluted backtelling that I can now say with confidence that I would have ruined several surprises for myself if I had dipped into the encyclopedia before finishing the series.After watching the series to the end, I've really enjoyed reading the "Lost Encyclopedia". Great pictures and illustrations. Insights and relevancies I missed while watching the DVDs. Reminders of parts I liked. This is a good hardcover book full of photos.Happy Reader

A must-have coffee table book for the LOST enthusiast, full of cool pictures, quotes, and factoids from the series that will remind you of everything that was great about LOST. As much as I love this book, I'm taking away one star because it is not as comprehensive as I had hoped. If you are trying to find out, for example, what song or music was playing in which episode, or the list of guns used in each episode by different characters, and so on, you probably won't find that type of detailed information here.

The authors do a very good job of clearly describing the challenges of writing a multi-lingual capable applications. They do so for both client-based and web-based applications. I learned more than I thought I would about non-English languages and how vastly they can differ from our own. The real find is in their coverage of Unicode, explaining what it hopes to achieve and how it impacts your Java programming.I would say the next revision (if there's going to be one) would benefit by expanding font installation in other operating systems. Not too surprisingly, they cover only Windows, as it has the best unicode support today. However, TrueType support is possible on the Unixes, if you know how. I'd be curious to know how it would be possible on Mac OS X. The book would also benefit from expanded discussion on internationalizing web applications. It only covers display issues. The authors cite not wanting to cover issues surrounding web-based data entry and database operations because other authors discuss them, but those are relevant topics, IMO. After all, they discussed Swing-based data entry, so why not web forms? I was hoping for more complete coverage, as I am working on a I18N project now. But I'll have to hunt around for other books for the topics I could not read about here.Overall, this book is a great buy. Modern software developers would be foolish to not familiarize themselves with the I18N APIs in today's global economy.

This book is very dated. It covers the basics pretty well: ResourceBundles, DateFormatter, Locales, etc. However, there are several things I find disappointing about this book:1) All the examples are mostly client side Java. Even the topic of internationalizing websites spends more time on Java applets. While this is Ok, I'm guessing most i18n work in Java these days is done for web applications.2) There are better libraries/frameworks for dealing with Internationalization than the ones that come with Java: ICU4J and JodaTime to name a few. Since this book was written in 2001, these are not covered.3) This book does not cover anything related to Java 1.5.

This book, being the only one of its sort, is the way to go if you need to internationalize your java application. The book covers the basics of internationalization on through more tricky elements, from locale sensitive string replacement on through web input methods.While the book gives you insight into the design model of java i18n, it doesn't go into exacting super accurate detail. Likely the ever changing java api attributes to this.The book is good, the examples are supurb. Just I found a few things (relating to input methods) that had me going to java.sun.com to find answers to.

Great book on I18N, but I believe some more detail could have been given on the gotchas of using Unicode. I still think it is worthy of 4 stars however.

There are three ways to handle internationalization of your Java applications. First, ignore it and give up all your non-English speaking customers. Second, write customized versions of your programs for each language you wish to support and live with a maintenance nightmare. Or third, take advantage of the many internationalization features built into Java. Fortunately, the internationalization features of Java are fairly simple to use and this book clearly explains how to apply them to your applications. The authors start with a description of the many writing systems in use through the world and discuss the many problems that these writing systems can cause for developers. The book then covers a wide range of topics:* how to use resource bundles to isolate locale specific data* formatting dates, numbers, and currency* handling searching and sorting issues for non-Latin alphabets (Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, etc.) as well as special cases within the Latin alphabet (an "a" with an umlaut is sorted with "a" in German but after "z" in Swedish)* handling languages such as Arabic and Hebrew that write from right to left* designing graphical interfaces to handle any writing system* building internationalized web sitesIf you plan on using the internationalization features of Java then you will definitely want to start with this book. The book is written for the intermediate to advanced Java programmer who needs to develop internationalized applications. The authors assume that the reader is unfamiliar with the issues involved with developing internationalized applications. (...)

This book does a good job of handling localization issues with respect to java applications through the use of resource bundles, and native language UIs.In my current project we are doing some very intensive XML processing with web content. Web content can be in any number of encodings and character sets, and we've had a decent number of problems when converting content from one encoding to another or from one character set to another.I was hoping that this book would give very practical hints about how to handle/avoid/rectify character set conversion issues in java. However, the only mention of converting encodings/character sets claims that if you use the proper java.io class with the proper constructor arguments, java will wave it's magic wand and all is right with the world. I can tell you for a fact this isn't true. This was a big disappointment of this book.

It's true that Deitsch's book offers little more subject matter than Sun's excellent Internationalization chapter of the Java tutorial at their web site. But it has the virues of being a book, which you can curl up with, thumb around in, and mark up. And it covers the Sun topics in more depth, with a wealth of examples.Java is the programming language that built in language support from the ground up, and *Java Internationalization* tells you how to take advantage of this feature. If you are writing Java code for international markets, this is your one-stop shop for a complete textbook on the subject.

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.
