Review

“Fifteen exquisite, scrupulously accurate watercolors of birds in their habitats are captioned by a deceptively simple text…An excellent concept book that takes its young audience seriously while skillfully providing the basics of an important subject.”“Exceptionally detailed and uniformly accurate…the Sills succeed admirably.”“The full-color illustrations by wildlife artist John Sill are so lifelike that one almost expects the birds to fly off the pages…a wonderful visual introduction…”

This book is perfect for our kid bags at church. The children who take these bags in to the service are basically pre-readers and early-readers. I see parents reading the books to the kids, sometimes, so some text is fine. But I don't want too much text, so that a parent can finish the book fairly quickly, not taking up too much of the service for the parent, and so the book doesn't get boring for a child.l also want to collect books of quality and education value for the children. For instance I do include the Little Golden Book about the Nativity for the kid bags during the Advent/Christmas season. That is a nice book and faithful to the Gospel. I do tolerate some more text than usual in that book.I have to pick and choose carefully for the kid bags books. Short usually, nice visuals, little or no text usually, with educational and/or Christian value, and no noise-making apparatus connected to the book. Anyway, I originally ordered just one of the About Birds books to look it over. Now, I have ordered 10 more for the kid bags. I am thrilled with this book. It couldn't be better for the kid bags.

We own several of the books in this series of books about animals by Cathryn Sill. My son is severely autistic and I'm homeschooling him. These books have changed our lives. He loves them. They are beautifully illustrated and written in a way that helps him understand without overwhelming him. They are such a huge help to us for science and reading. I can't say enough good things about these books and I would recommend them to anyone. I plan on owning all of them eventually.

I love this book. I bought it for my 3 and 4 year old while my older children were studying about birds in science. The illustrations are beautiful, the words simple and clear. My 3 year old in particular has really taken to it and memorized the words. Though the facts presented seem very obvious and simple, after studying with the older children (Apologia's Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day), I realized the words here were very well chosen and really present the most important things to know when learning about birds.

My daughter is just 24 months so on the young side for hte recommended age of this book but she's obsessed with birds. She LOVES this book and all the names of the different birds. She's just barely too young for the last few pages which showcase all of the pages in thumbnail type form and have a bit more information.

Nice illustrations, but very little information even for a 4 year old chil

The illustrations in this book are stunningly beautiful and frame-worthy. I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't more text, but nevertheless it is a well thought out book that passes on some good information to kids and sparks a desire to learn more about the diverse world of birds. It's worth owning for the illustrations alone!

I got this book for my 20 month old who could watch the birds outside all day. She LOVES it! The pictures are all drawings but realistic and not cartoon-y at all. The text is simple on each page (ex "birds come in all sizes") but is expanded upon a little in the back of the book (ex the length and wingspan of each bird is listed) with a thumbnail of each picture. It may be too young for school aged kids but for toddlers/preschooler it's fabulous.

Book is very nicely put together. My grandson is always "reading" it to me. He is only 2 and he tells me all about the birds in there. I understand he is to young to really read it to me but he likes the pictures. When he gets a little older he'll realize all the good things it has to say. It shows the birds and their eggs , color of the eggs too. Recently we had an accident where soda was spilled on it and they book is made of a smooth cover & pages very easy to clean.
