Review

Gail Ghetia Bellamy crystallizes the memories of Christmas in Cleveland . . . an amazing job . . . the pictures alone are worth the price . . . If you are from Cleveland, this book will be an exciting trip down Memory Lane. I highly, highly recommend it. (Tim Lones ClevelandClassicMedia.com 2012-12-11)Every year that passes, the Christmas memories of our youth grow sweeter and more perfect. A 1965 photograph of holiday shopping at Higbee's or an original Atari 2600 box can momentarily transport us to times as treasured as they are impossible to revisit. That's the emotional territory author Gail Ghetia Bellamy covers in Cleveland Christmas Memories. The photo-heavy, 120-page book not only documents the city's bygone retail traditions, but also steps inside our homes to look at how we celebrated the holidays. . . . What resonates are the photographs of artifacts from Christmases past, be it a kid's shopping bag from the Higbee's Twigbee Shop, a WMMS advertisment with the FM rock station's iconic buzzard pulling the sleigh or Frankie Yankovic's 1964 album Christmas Party. (Jim Vickers Cleveland Magazine 2012-12-01)Filled with great Cleveland holiday nostalgia reference, imagery and stories . . . I would recommend each CLE-lover have a copy on hand for those nights sitting around the fireplace with a mug of hot cocoa and holiday tunes in the air . . . Magical stuff in this book! (Book Reviewer IHeartCleveland.com 2012-12-12)A nostalgic guide to the Christmas experience for the Boomer Generation living in Northeast Ohio However, the book may have an interest to those beyond Northeast Ohio residents from the 1940s to the 1980s. The many photos in this book will stir Christmas memories whether you've ever lived in Cleveland or not! (Joanna Wilson ChristmasTVHistory.com 2012-12-14)

Dozens of Northeast Ohioans share their personal stories of Christmas past; includes recollections of people who made Christmas happen, too: former Santas, retail window dressers, entertainers, and of course parents . . .

A really great trip down memory lane. I got it for my aunt and a few other relatives. Mostly people aged 60 and older will appreciate this more - I am younger but still remember some of these things - either personally or from family members reminiscing. I only wish my mom was still alive to have seen this book - she would have been over the moon happy! If you are a baby boomer and grew up in Cleveland - this is the book for you! No holiday season was complete without a trip downtown after Thanksgiving. It was truly a magical "life in the snow globe" time of life. The pictures of the Sterling Linder tree, Mr. Jingaling - oh - just everything! I also really found this very informative - lots of background information. For example I had no idea the stores hired off duty policemen to play Santa. Those were the days when companies put safety and the customer first. I can't recommend this book enough!

Wow, did this bring back memories. I bought one to give to my sister and we stroll down memory lane. A word of caution though...the song about " Mr. Jingaling, how you ringlaling...keeper of the keys. On Hallies seventh floor we'll be looking for you to turn the key." is now stuck in my head. I believe that is called an earworm and so far I have been unable to get it out of my head.

My grandparents, in their late 80s, grew up in Cleveland and lived there most of their lives. Every night at dinner, the try to remember the names of all the places where they loved to go. Every now and again I send them another book in this series and they go crazy over them. They tell me over and over how this is the best gift anyone has ever given them. But it's also a huge gift for me, being able to sit on the couch with them and watch them get so excited when they remember a place from the book and then tell me stories about them. Really super books and such a great gift.

Brought back many fond memories of taking Cleve. transit to downtown for a day of shopping and fun with Mom.

Not enough photos and far too much highly personal and not as dated related babbling by the author (who is she anyway?). A bit disappointing compared to other publications about the Cleveland past. And a bit over-priced for the content.

Not from Cleveland but love this book. No matter what city you are from you will be able to relate to it. Holiday memories will flood back tp you. Have some hot coco with this book.❄ðŸÅ½„😀

I gave copies to my husband and children who spent Christmas morning absorbed in this book. They were raised in this era anddelighted in the familiar pictures. It brought many happy memories.

If you are from Cleveland, especially in the 50s, 60s and 70s you will appreciate the memories. A time past. Great pictures, stories and memories of Cleveland's Christmas. Enjoyable and a nice gift.
